Cat Allergy Update

Update from my question about cat allergies. I took Nick into the doctor and we tested him. Sure enough, he's allergic. Its not a bad allergy, but they said since he has eczema, he has a higher chance of asthma and exposing him to a cat on a regular basis could further that. So, no cat. They also tested something that would say his likelihood of other allergies and that was low. Apparently 150 is likely to have allergies and his was 7. He was pretty upset. I hated breaking his heart like that. I told him we would donate something to the kitties and ask for a picture of the one he loved. We talked about getting a dog instead, but he's not sure. So, I guess, we will see. Thanks for the help before.

Aw!!! I'm so sad about this, Mari. I feel sad for Nick. I know what it feels like. I have asthma and as a kid was tested for allergies... we never could have a cat (or a dog until I was a teenager and convinced my parents to get a poodle... and I never had an issue with her unless I got one of her hairs IN my eye). But I did have hamsters, plenty of fish, parakeets, horses, a rabbit, a turtle, a goose and even a goat as a kid. Hopefully, his heart will heal a little from the disappointment and he can choose another type of pet that he'll be able to really enjoy.

And the connection between eczema and asthma is strong in our household, so I know it can really be something to look out for. It's good you got him tested.

How about a rabbit? My sister had one that she absolutely LOVED - kept it in a cage most of the time, but it could be in the house too.

My youngest son has a green tree frog that is really cool. Can't really hold it and pet it though.

Aww, I feel so bad for Nick. Do look into other pet options Mari. There are so many little critters that make fine pets.

So my husband is allergic to cats and has asthma (since he was 9 months old) and he grew up with cats. We have 2 cats right now but they are short haired cats. He already takes medicine for his allergies and asthma and the short haired cats dont make it any worse.

So if his allergy is not a real severe one it MIGHT be possible for him to get a cat at some point. You would just have to evaulate if you want him on allergy meds or not. To my husband and even my mom and brother they loved the cats so much that it was worth taking the medication.

I've had a cat allergy all my life. I know my DH would love a cat, but it's just not realistic for me. For me, if I wanted a pet, I would consider a small dog.
