Carnival goldfish...ugh!

Everyone says "don't worry, they don't live very long"...not in our house!

We went to another carnival last night and I knew I didn't want a friend for "Tiny" so we completely avoided that game. One immortal fish is enough for this house.
 
I'm probably stodgy - but I think it's just wrong to offer up fish as a prize. :( hopefully he loves his immortal fish, though!

Just for the record, his school carnival that I am chairing next year will NOT have fish as prizes.
 
My son's first pet was a goldfish he won at a carnival when he was four. Who would have thought a little guy could get a ball in the bowl and that his fish would live so long? He loved that little fish and I still smile at the memory. :)
 
We had a freebie goldfish that lived for over FIVE YEARS in a small fish bowl....no oxygen going in....just a little tiny bowl.
 
I remember how badly I wanted to win a goldfish at the school carnival when I was a kid. Oh my gosh, I had a name picked out and everything. Never won one.

I agree that fish shouldn't be given as prizes though. You just never know the situation a family is in and sometimes its like giving the poor things a death sentence.

I miss carnivals like that though. Our school does a back to school carnival but we just have big blow up things for them to bounce on, snow cones and kettle corn. I suggested the old fashioned carnival with games and prizes and booths and everyone looked at me like I had two heads.
 
Sherri - We're actually going to do more of that type of carnival because our principal is so against the inflatables (too many injuries). I can't wait because I love the games :)
 
I do too! I really wish I could convince everyone to do that more. We've never had any injuries on the inflatables other than when two teachers were racing up one and one fell over the side. The kids, nope, no injuries there. However, I still don't think they are that fun. I think the first time they did it maybe but every year?

We have a different situation with ours because we have pre-K through 5th but they are divided in to 3 different buildings so any kind of carnival, etc. is done at the largest of our city parks (which is right next to the 2nd-3rd building that I work at). Anyway, the principal of our 4th-5th building and his wife own the local tumbling gym and they have branched out in to the inflatables so now we get the inflatables free so that saves PTO a bunch of money so that's what everyone wants to do. Boo.
 
3 of my kids have betas and the best thing about it is my 11 y/o is actually really good about feeding all 3 of them {his and his 2 sisters} and then telling us when their little tanks are dirty! the 2 girls like their fish in their rooms but could care less about taking care of them!
 
Goldfish have a pretty long life span, that's for sure! I'm finding that so do several other kinds of fish. We just lost a fish the other day that was, I swear, older than my 6 year old. My husband bought me a 30 gallon aquarium for Christmas in 2000. Our original fish were still around when my son, born late in 2005, was still a baby. Right now we have one fish that we got when our almost 10 year old was just about 20 months old. At one point I was so sick of the aquarium and just wanted to get rid of it so I said no more fish, when the ones we had died that would be it. Several of them are still living. I finally relented and let the kids buy some fish for Valentine's Day because we were down to just a few and I'm not hating on the tank right now. LOL
 
I loved getting them as a kid, but as a parent I'm so glad they don't give them out at my kids' school! We have a carnival with booths and prizes, but you earn prize tickets and then redeem them for whatever you want from the prize table.
 
We got a freebie beta fish that I was told wouldn't last... man... he lasted over 5 years, and multiple vacation all by himself!
 
my sister won a fish at a carnival for my son..yeah right she just didn't want to deal with it...it lived for 5 years...went from a bowl to a tank...no more fish for him until he can clean the tank
