camera upgrade?

i was just wondering when/how you know when it's time to upgrade your DSLR? i've got a canon rebel xti - i've had it since 2006 ... i'm sure it's due for a major cleaning/tune-up - and i also know that i need to take some lessons and get better at using it ... but before i do all that, i was wondering if i should just buy a new, better camera instead? (i have a birthday coming up and my mom is willing to buy me a new camera if that's what i want :wub - maybe a 7d?

Dana, I'm right there with you. I bought My rebel xti in 2006 when my son was born. It looks like it's been through a war! I was thinking of taking it to a camera shop to be cleaned & fixed but, like you, I wonder if maybe I should just upgrade instead.
