Camera/Memory Card Question

I know this isn't the best place to get my answer, but since there are many camera-knowledgable ladies in this community, I thought I'd throw it out there incase anyone just happens to know what I can do, lol.

So I have a Kodak EasyShare z612 and a Kodak 2GB memory card. They've worked beautifully together for a little over a year now. Recently I have used it to transfer some files between computers. Since then I have been intermittantly getting the camera asking me to reformat the card. It has worked up until now.

Now when I put the memory card into the camera it prompts me to reformat. When I hit OK, it gives the error message "Read Only Memory Card, Remove Write Protection To Read or Write to Card."

At first I thought it might have been referring to the lock switch on the side of the card, so I moved it into "locked" position and I get a different error message altogether about it being locked. When the switch is in the "Unlocked" position I can write files from my computer (and read them) just fine, but not in the camera). I have also tried formatting the memory card from my computer, nothing seems to work.

Can I somehow remove the "write-protection" or did I fry my memory card by using it to transfer files (but it is only fried when I try to use it in my camera)? Thanks in advanace if anyone has any knowledge on how to "un-write protect" a memory card.

Well, I was using it to transfer photos from one hard drive to another, and then also I had saved some copies of photos (jpegs) to it that I had edited. like I opened them directly from the card, edited in photoshop and saved an edited copy to the card. I have done it in the past with no problems.

But I have emptied the card completely and my camera still can't read it to even format it, because of the percieved "write protection"

Interesting. Were you using a card reader? I've never done it that way before. Not sure I know how to fix it. If there's nothing on the card, then I would probably just reformat it to get it to work.

Are there files still on the card when you're trying to reformat? I'd clear everything off the card using the computer and then try to format it in the camera.

Thanks ladies, I tried everything that was suggested and Kodak tech support didn't have any other suggestions for me either...I think my memory card is toasted (at least for use in the camera...apparently, since it still works in my computer I can use it as a thumb drive). Anyway, thanks again for the suggestions!

I've never had this happen but I google it and found some things to try

try going to the properties of the memory card (right click) and unclick the read only

Is there nothces in the side of the card...put tape over them but be carefull not to cover the contacts

I also found this little tid bit "Hard disks do not have built in hardware write protection, so you are dealing with some kind of a software issue"

Hope this helps you some!!!!

The good thing are those 2GB cards are not too expensive to replace ($20-30). And now they have 4GB cards. I just tried to take care of my mom's, so I just priced them Sunday...
