Cake Ball Question

I am supposed to go to a cookie exchange tomorrow and bring 6 dozen cookies. I am trying to come up with something fun and unique but not too time consuming since the cookie exchange is tomorrow and I just got invited today. Do you gals think those cake balls that were talked about on here several days ago would work?

Thanks for your input!

Everybody would LOVE them, but I don't think they fit your "not time consuming" requirement. They would be a hit though!! :)

Cake balls are tasty but I think they take a bit of time to make. Gotta roll each ball . . . then roll around in the coating (at which point they may or may not fall apart). . . and isn't there some step where they are supposed to go in the freezer at some point?

well i spent all day in the kitchen baking cookies and i'm afraid i'm not a very good baker.. my snickerdoodles taste salty and my chocolate krackles just taste gross (lily wouldn't even eat one so that tells you something)

i'm thinking about trying the cake balls tomrrow.. at least they would taste good. both of the cookies i made today involved ball rolling so i can't imagine it being much more work.. lol

Well, my first plan was to make molasses crinkles. But, I went to the grocery store and guess what - they were OUT of molasses.

So, after seeing these replys, I am assuming these cake balls take longer than I am thinking.

I guess I will go to plan C. Fudge Snowtops. They call for a devils food cake mix, eggs, and cool whip. You roll them in a ball and then roll them in powdered sugar. When you bake them, the powdered sugar "cracks" apart and makes them look kind of like "snowtop" mountains. I will post a picture later after I bake them.

cake balls have to be rolled and dipped. it's that dipping part that gets to me. messy, drippy. or maybe it was b/c i had 2 helpers . . .

those sound good.

oh maybe as I disclaimer I should have stated that I also think those slice and bake cookies that come in a tube are a PITA to make too.

No, ITA Mimi...dipping the cake balls was a major PITA...it's a good thing they tasted so good.
Oh good, someone is backing me up LOL. And if memory serves . . . I think quite a few were eaten just as they finished their messy choco-bath :D

Hmmm... I put my cake balls on the stick and then dip them, or are you guys just not doing the stick? I dip the stick into the chocolate, then into the cake ball, throw them in the freezer and then when they're firm, I dip them into the chocolate, it wasn't too messy for us. =/

hmm, I think I tried that first but my cake balls fell apart when I tried to get them on a stick . . . think a tried chopsticks and toothpicks? in the end I was rolling them in the coating and lifting out with a fork (with the ball ON the fork, not fork stabbed through)

maybe I made the cake balls wrong in the 1st place. it is quite possible.

See, I didn't think of freezing the balls first...hmmm..next time...and by next time I mean in like five minutes b/c I have decided that I can't live without them.

Aaron they only need to be in the freezer about 20 mins and they harden up a tad so they don't fall apart in the coating :)

The recipe book says "store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week. Or freeze them, wrapped in foil and placed in a plastic freezer bag, for up to 3 months. Thaw the cookies overnight on the counter before serving."

For anyone wondering, the recipe is 1 pkg plain devil's food cake mix, 2 large eggs, 1 3/4 cups thawed frozen whipped topping. Mix these together with mixer - it will be very thick. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. Take them out and spoon out teaspoonfuls, roll into balls, then roll in sifted powder sugar. Placed on ungreased cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes. Enjoy!

So, do you keep the sticks in them? Like cake-lollipops?? And what do you use for said "sticks"? I am intrigued. I am going to make a ton for Christmas goodies (always good to go with something I have never made before...right?)

Yup!! Cupcake pops!!

Jennifer, Bakerella
Bakerella, Jennifer...

Cupcake Pops

They're so yumilicious. I'm making a big batch for Yorick's 2nd Birthday instead of cake!!
They're the big candy sticks you can pick up at hobby stores.

Am I the only one who wasn't crazy about cake balls? Mine were sickly sweet and the cake didn't taste cooked because it was so wet with the frosting you mix it up with. Definitely not worth the time. But maybe I did it wrong...

*audible gasp*

*sound of Aaron hitting the floor*

Did you use the whole can of frosting? i've found that if you use too much frosting they are too sweet. Try using less frosting, or try a different combination.

I didn't like them when I used a whole can of icing. Way too sweet. But I like them with half a can of frosting. We have a #2 disher, which is a small ice cream scoop, I think it is 2 teaspoons. DH uses it to portion out chocolate chip cookies and it is very hand for cake balls and any other cookie that has to be formed into a ball. Just scoop & squeeze, and only about $4 at WalMart. Melon ballers work well too but the are half the size & that is just too many balls to dip IMO

I freeze mine before dipping & use a wooden squewer, like for grilling kabobs, to do the dipping

Yeah, it was VERY frosting-y. That was probably my problem. I'll have to try it again another time with chocolate and MUCH less frosting.

Bryn - thanks for the tip w/ the stick. I couldn't figure out why my sticks didn't work. I am gonna try that with the next batch.
