Blog security?

I am just curious to see what you all thought of blog security. Should your blog be for anyone to see or set to private? I have had some friends recently set their blogs to private for security reasons & it has got me thinking...Is it safe to have all of your personal ifo. out there for anyone to see?? I don't have mine set to private but am thinking about it. What do you think?

I think it's different for each person. I know blogger who post their own names, their childrens names, etc. I know other bloggers who call their DD1, boy child, etc.

I don't have any kids yet, so I don't really care too much about security at this point. I'm all out there, and I'm ok with that.

I do not have mine set to private but I dont think many people are to interested in reading my blog either. I dont think I post to much info on there that anyone could really use though. I go by first names only and dont post any info as to jobs names, schools etc.

You should never use full names, give addresses anything like that on a public or private blog as hackers don't care, they know how to break laws and break into people's private blogs as well.

I think if you use common sense and be careful of what all you share then you should be fine.

I have 2 blogs... one is private and only DH can see it. On my public blog I try to be much more vague with what I post..never any full names or things like that.

I call my kids by their nicknames on my blog, but I don't really hide their names on my forums... even the gals I've known from "back in the day" only know our first names and what state we live in. I dunno, I guess I just don't worry TOO much... I just let my common sense guide me :)

That's how I feel about it. I have a public blog and I'm fairly open on it...my family reads it because none of them live here..but I also have a private blog. When you view my blogger profile you can see them both but only one is readable. It's nice having both options. :)

Mine isn't private, but it isn't searchable. So the only way you can find it is if I give you the link or someone has a link to it on their blog. I don't give out my family blog address to anyone we don't know, so I don't worry too much. I do get a little traffic from people I don't know, but not too much--and in most cases, they are friends of friends.

I stick with nicknames and I never mention where I live. I haven't used my boys' actual names online in almost 4 years. I'm sor tof surprised I ever did because I've always been all about aliases. I never even used Stacey online until I joined a parenting board when DS1 was a couple months old. Their names are on my layouts but I've been trying very hard to remember to blur that out on my web copies.

I do have a private Live Journal blog that is only visible to about 8 people. That's where I go to vent about personal stuff.

I only use first names, never full names or names of schools, churches or the city we live in. I try to even be a little vague about specific activities, just describing it rather than naming it so it's a little more anonymous and we're a little less findable through searches or whatever. My hubby's pretty uncomfortable with all of it, but I keep reassuring him that I'm very careful.

I'm not too paranoid, but I have a stat counter on both my blogs. I used to be a little worried about it until I found out some unknown hits were actually just from scrappers checking out my work. ;) Then I started a scrap blog so I could separate the two and now my family blog gets a whopping 10-15 hits a day. I decided against private because I know a lot of family (who are technically challenged) wouldn't check it if it was private and they had to create and account and then sign in every time they wanted to see what we were up to. I must admit, I never check out friend's blogs that are private. I always forget about them.
