Big step forward tomorrow....

I borrowed money from my sister to pay a retainer for a lawyer to proceed with divorce. Still haven't shared this with my husband yet.... feeling pretty nervous about what his reaction will be, although unless he's completely clueless, it's obvious that neither of us is happy in our marriage, and haven't been for a long time.
I've met with this lawyer once already (for a free consult), but now it's feeling much more real... I am so looking forward to life "after" but I am not gonna lie... I'm really afraid that this is going to be ugly. I have soooo many questions about how this process works; I've written a big list and will be bringing it with me tomorrow. My main concern is for our 3 boys. They are 12, almost 14, and 16. I want primary custody of them, and that is a non-negotiable for me. I'm not going to go into details, but he's a lousy father and he'll be lucky if they want to spend time with him on a regular basis..... but I'm still concerned that things might not go the way I want them to.
Please send positive thoughts and energy.... I could use them. :)

Oh Lori, I'm so sorry you're going through this. I went through a divorce myself in 2010, and it's not easy. It was probably the most trying time of my entire life. Praying that you get the answers that you need and that your husband won't make the process any harder than it has to be.

I won't lie to you, it wasn't easy. But I will say you can get through it. I got a divorce in 2003. It turned out my ex was pretty easy to deal with, he actually wanted less visitation than I offered. After they are at a certain age, kids have sports, activities, dates, dances, homework, etc that they are dealing with that they spend less time with both parents. Once she was 16 my oldest wasn't able to visit him as often and he was okay as he understood. Maybe your husband will be easier to deal with than you think.

I wish for the best possible outcome for you, and will keep you in my thoughts and send lots and lots of love your way.

Thank you, ladies. I appreciate all the positive thoughts! I didn't sleep much at all last night, but I know that I am doing what I need to do. I am hoping for the best but want to be prepared for the worst. Fingers crossed that it doesn't come to that.

Good luck to you and your family. Hope that everything goes well. Such a hard thing to go through, for everyone.

Best to you and the boys during this time Lori! Hoping it all goes as smoothly as possible.
Hugs.

Thanks again ladies... I really appreciate the support. I'm off to drop my oldest off for his 3 hour orientation for his first job (at an amusement park this summer), and then I'm meeting with my lawyer at 2:30. Eeek... but in a good way. :)

Good meeting. He sent me home with some paperwork to fill out and return, and then I'll be ready to file. Should be within the next couple of weeks. Eek.

I'm glad the meeting went well; I hope you got the answers you wanted about custody. Good luck with everything!

Sending some positive thoughts your way for it to be over quickly and amicably. My sister divorced from her husband a few years ago and even though she was dreading being single, she is much much happier now.
