Back up question

What's the easiest way to back up your computer? I see lots of you have had hard drives crash. Looks like some use EHD and some just back up to disk. What is the best way to do it? Honestly, I have never backed my stuff up (I know bad...bad...bad), but I would like to do it before something happens. What is the easiest way to do a back up on a whole computer?

If you're looking to do a whole computer and can afford a backup EHD, that's definitely what I'd recommend. It is much easier than doing DVDs. You might also look into some of the online backups but since they're rather slow I would only recommend that as a secondary backup since you don't currently have anything backed up.

I have two EHDs and burn everything to DVD. We also have an application with our Mac that backs up every week.

So when you buy a EHD, is it easy to get the files backed up to the EHD? I have never done this before and wasn't sure if it's something easy or if I'll have no clue what I'm doing. Oh, and after you do the initial back up on the EHD, is it easy to add stuff later?

My digital stuff I keep on my EHD and backup to my PC by just copying it over about once a month or so.

Client pictures I burn to 2 dvds and keep one at home and one at the studio. I don't promise them I'll have them for any length of time, but I do try to make sure I do just in case.

ok this may sound silly but do you backup or do you just copy your files? i'm in the process of copying everything to my ehd but i'm wondering if i should be backing up too...

I have a copy of all my digi supplies, photos, and layouts on my EHD, I also burn my photos to disk, as well as back-up everything to an online back-up system (I use Carbonite). I am totally paranoid about a hard drive crash, so I like play it as save as possible. My next step is to make an extra copy of all my photos and layouts, and have it at my parents house, just in case.

"Backing up" to an EHD is essentially just copying everything over to it. It's just a second hard drive that is separate from the computer itself.

Once you get everything on there, when you buy something new you just copy it (I extract it) to the EHD. I extract to my laptop hard drive and then to my EHD, and place the files accordingly in my organizational system.

I have been wondering the same thing for awhile. I haven't backed up any of my files but I want to real soon. I don't need an EHD, I just need something that I can put several gigs of stuff on it. I tried burning my stuff to dvd's but for some reason it wouldn't work. I don't know if it's because we have Vista or what. I thought about buying a jump drive with 16 gigs of memory. Have any of you backed up your stuff using a jump drive? Was it easy to do? Was it easy to keep adding files to it?

I have SmugMug - not only do I back up all my pics - (They have 3 separate servers in 3 dif places) I have a terabyte of space so I upload all the kits I love there - To a Private gallery that only I can access - It is a yearly service I pay for but so worth it!

I use both DVDs and a EHD. I wipe the backup EHD every few of months & then drag & drop all my documents, scrap stuff, pictures, music & audiobooks on to it. Once a month I burn my photos, layouts, music & new audiobooks to DVD. I keep the zips of my digi supplies in a folder & when I have 4GBs I burn them to DVD and delete them.

Jump drives are great as they are portable, and you can add files by click, drag and drop, but as a long-term solution may have some recovery issues. It is my understanding that an EHD is much more stable, if not more gigs for the money. Vista has a love hate relationship with a few of my jump drives, so I am a bit leery of keeping anything permanently on them.

If you don't want an EHD, online backup is another option. We use Carbonite for online backup. Haven't had to recover anything from them yet, and the first backup took about two weeks, but I am really happy with them! There is no limit on how much you can back up, and it has a non-intrusive auto feature and simple interface I like. Not sure about monthly, but Carbonite is $49.95 USD for a year.

If anyone would like to give Carbonite a try, please PM me and I can get you a referral code for a month free. :)
