HELP ME!! :D dd turned 10 on the 19th and this weekend is her "friend birthday party". it's a sleepover (8 girls inc. dd) and she wants it to be asian themed. she adores sushi and pho (a vietnamese soup)...so she decided to run with that idea. any ideas for decorations. i do not want to end up spending hundreds of $$'s. her cake is a little two tiered fondandt covered cake. it's gonna be a fun whimsical (dr. suessish) cake with an asian flare. the colors she wants are purple, black, kelly green and turquiose. those colors seem a little off to me...any suggestions there?

so recap...i need:

1. cost efficent ideas for asian themed birthday party decor

2. color suggestions to give off that theme (keeping in mind purple is her fave)

3. anything else you have in mind...decor...games or otherwise.

why do my kids have to be so cool and want amazing parties that i have no clue how to pull off?

hmmm...
first things that come to mind are paper lanterns, which are really cheap, I'm going to look at a couple of sites I usually run to when I need party ideas... brb

Like Bryn's idea with lanterns - you could get white, and have them "bling" them up with glitter paint, origami/kraft paper, yarn/ribbon tassels, etc.

I remember making origami dolls around that age - template here http://www.freekidscrafts.com/japanese_origami_dolls-e245.html, but ours came in a $0.99 or so premade kit at the local store. or you could play with origami?

Not sure what your favorite craft stores are, but maybe check for purple "chinese takeout" style boxes you could fill with rice crackers/candy/Hello Panda/Pocky?

I was going to suggest the 'takeout' boxes. Also, maybe you could buy some fortune cookies to put either in the girls' boxes or just have them out in a bowl for them to munch on and read for fun!
Also, you could find a book with Korean (or whatever asian language she wants) letters and the girls could make bookmarks or something with their names written in Korean (or whatever).
You could look for some fun chopsticks (or even plain ones) and the girls could do up their hair with them and you could take lots of fun pictures with that.
Ok, thats all I can think of for now. :)

Yea, those paper lanterns are fun. You could also get those food boxes very cheap at Oriental Trading. We got 75 for like $8 for a church activity in March. We decorated them with the theme of our party and handed them out with the party favors inside.

jenny fab ideas! thank you dearest!

Do you have an Asian grocery near you? you can get lanterns, decorations very inexpensively and also fun candy, etc. Also a fun thing is Japanese marble soda. You can buy them by the case at an Asian grocery very inexpensively and they are tasty and fun.

2 words - dollar....store. LOL...you never know what you may find there!

Anyway, about the colors - I don't think they're weird together at all. I'd make you a cake if we lived nearby! It'd be a great excuse for me to practice flowers and bamboo and such!
