Hi
I was wondering what your opinion was on sending care packages to the troops overseas. Do the soldiers like it? I use a website(www.anysoldier.com) and pick a few names and have my cub scouts make cards, write thank you notes and make up care packages several times a year. The kids really enjoy it but what was wondering if we are helping or bothering the guys and gals who are doing so much already. Thanks for your opinions. Also, is this the best way for the kids to show their support or is something else better? I was just wondering. Thanks!

My brother was in Bahrain for a few years and they LOVE this kind of stuff. Just knowing that people still remember what they are doing and that it's appreciated makes them happy. Go for it. And I think it's a great way to have kids show support. You could maybe have them write a short essay (a sentance or two) about why they appreciate being an American or why they appreciate our troops.

Its a great thing to do. When my squadron sends people over, I always make sure to send them something I bake. I also did a stranger kind of exchange for 2 years where I was given the name of a soldier who didn't have someone back home to send stuff, so I did it. Course for him I bought all packaged stuff. But I know for a fact that they love it. I already have orders for what they would like for their next trip over.

The paper scrapping site I own with a couple of friends started a Cards for Soldiers Program in February 2006 when a good friend's DH was going on tour. We made hand made cards, sized A2, blank inside for the soldiers to use to send cards back to their loved ones. They LOVED it. The chaplain (my friend's DH) even sent us photos of the soldiers with the cards, we even got an email from a girlfriend of a soldier in that platoon who was in a separate platoon asking us to do the same for her platoon. I think they appreciate everything they get.

Oh and if anyone is interested on the Cards program, here is the blog:

There is a mailing schedule, card size requirements and even photos on the older posts.

Being a military family overseas... and having tons of friends and family in Iraq/Afghanistan, I know that they always appreciate any show of support they receive. Sometimes we feel like we're forgotten all the way over here... so when we/they see that they're not forgotten, it means so much.

Thank you for taking the time to show your support!

I can tell you from experience when overseas that mail is the best thing in the world no matter who it is from. The soldiers appreciate it and anything you send is used. Thank you for supporting our troops from a an Air Force vet and the wife to an active duty Air Force soldier!

Well, being active duty myself I can tell you anyone deployed loves getting stuff. But I can also tell you that they have very limited space to store their goodies. I've had 2 of my airmen deploy and they've told me how nice it was to get stuff. :)

Hope that helps.

Pam, I didn't know you did that! Bookmarking your site to send some cards :)

We know lots of men and women overseas (we're unofficial sponsors for cadets from West Point and we get more and more each year). My mom tries to send a package about once a month or every 6 weeks to each of the ones we know over there. She also sends "blank" packages to the base, so that anyone over there can get some goodies.

She usually sends packaged candy. Whatever the soldiers don't eat, they give to the local kids and they love it!

I sent weekly packages to DH when he was in Afghanistan. I usually tried to pack extra candy and stuff for the other guys who didn't get as much stuff as DH did.

they definitely appreciate it! while my DH was in Iraq, i sent him care packages just about every week. and he also got some from other kind, wonderful people like you who care enough to send them one. so, yes, continue it. they really do appreciate it! its a little taste of home for our soldiers so far away from home.
