We have an external hard drive that has I think 160GB of space on it... Right now I just have my pictures of my daughter from the time she was born till I think January (10 months)... I also have Mozy running on my computer, but I am really really REALLY tempted to move ALL of my kits (or most of them) to the external and just keep that with the computer case... How reliable is that??? I'm quite afraid of moving all of my kits... All 17.5 GB of them to the hard drive and then having the hard drive malfunction and loosing allllllll of them... Also for those of you who HAVE moved them to a external hard drive how easy is it to access them when you want to use a certain kit?? Any help would be greatly appreciated by both me and my hubby as all of those kits (I'm assuming) is REALLY slowing our computer down :(

As long as the external is backed up on Mozy, it should be fine. Accessing stuff from your external is no problem, I keep a lot of stuff on mine :)

Yes, I agree with Jenn. Just have them backed up somewhere else, don't rely only on your EHD. I have over 100 GB of scrap stuff and it's all backed up to EHD, on my hard drive, and a lot of it is burned to DVDs.

One thing to check on is if you move the files to your EHD and delete them off your hard drive, you might have to redo the backup to Mozy. I'm not sure about that but I think that's how it works.

Personally, I trust an internal hard drive much more than an external hard drive. They stay a lot cooler and tend to last longer because of that. Plus if they do start going bad, you usually will get some kind of warning where as with an EHD, there's a lot of stories of people plugging them in and them just not working. I know with my laptop internal hard drive I started getting errors awhile before I actually replaced the drive.

Lots of people use EHDs that way though so as long as you are diligent in your backups, you should be ok.

I have 2 EHD's. All of my stash is on both of them. I don't keep anything on my laptop hard drive except PSP. I use my primary EHD daily and only turn on the second one to back up once a week or so. I burn DVD's of all my finished 8x8 layouts and all my photos but I do not burn kits/etc. About a month ago my primary EHD failed, but I didn't lose anything b/c I had my backup one..now it's my primary and I bought a new one for backup lol.

Ditto. I use a second one to back up.

I also put all my kits and pictures and pages on discs so that just incase anything happened I would at least have them on cd :D

Yeah. What she said. :)

Same here. I have one main EHD and 2 others for back up. One gets photos and the other gets digi crap. I also burn DVDs every month.

When I first started I burned EVERYTHING but you know how many times I ever went back to those DVD's? ZERO lol...Honestly, after I use a kit a few times, unless I REALLY love it, I rarely go back to it. If it has elements I like I copy them to my elements folder. Once every few months I actually go through my stash and purge anything I know I won't use again.

Alright thank you SOOO much for all of your responses!! I dont know if I want to spend allllllll the time to put them onto dvds or cds but if I do atleast I know its a hard copy... :) You are all so sweet to help lil ol' me out! :)
