Anyone have a netbook?

Just curious. Does anyone have a netbook and are you glad you purchased it? I really could have used one this weekend when I couldn't get to a computer but wanted to get some work done. I ended up picking up an old fashioned paper notebook and wrote in that. I will now have to transcribe those notes into a digital format which makes me think that now may be a good time to jump on the netbook wagon.

I'm sort of curious about the size of keyboards (can you type or do you need to use the 2 finger method?), duration of battery life, weight and size of the machine since I was hoping to carry it around on a regular basis.

Thanks for any input.

make sure you read REVIEWS on whichever one you consider purchasing...and keep in mind that they might not have CD/DVD drives in them...and might not be powerful enough to run PSE or CS3/4...does that matter to you?

I know my mom considered a specific one...and I went out and read user reviews on it and the wi-fi STUNK on it...so she didn't get it...thank goodness we read up on it. She's shelved the idea for now of getting one.

We have a little Toshiba that we just bought to take on business trips when we don't want to haul a full-size laptop. So far, we both love it. The keyboard is a little bit flatter than we're used to, but it's fine. It doesn't have a CD/DVD drive, but we didn't buy it for that.

My husband works for a big PC company in business sales and says people return netbooks all of the time saying "they're too small" (even when he's tried to tell them that when asking what their needs are in the sales process, etc.)

If you're going to use it for internet stuff and travel, then it's probably a good idea, but if you plan on spending heavy-duty time on it, I'd go ahead and get a laptop. Just my 2 cents! :)

I have a little HP that I bought solely to browse on the internet and take with me on vacations instead of my laptop. It has worked really well and actually the girls have kind of taken it over as *theirs* which is ok with me since they leave mom and dad's laptops alone now!

We just bought one for our upcoming trip and plan on having the kids use it to do homework and play their online games on. (They used to use my old laptop until it died recently). My husband loaded a bunch our movies on it so the kids can watch them on the plane. The battery that came with it only lasts for two hours, but you can buy an extra battery that can last for 6 or 9 hours. It is definitely lighter and I can fit it into my big diaper bag purse.

With that being said, I think I might have preferred just getting a cheap regular-sized laptop because we don't travel THAT much. I tried using it for the first time today and was kind of annoyed at how small the screen is and how much I had to scroll. I couldn't even get the Webkinz website to work for my daughter because the window that pops open when you log in doesn't have a scroll bar and I couldn't get to the button to accept the user agreement. I tried using the keyboard and that didn't work either.

I can let you know how it all works out after our trip.

Hey Jenny - we had the same issue with Webkinz - go to the faq on that site to see what the size you need your screen to be - don't remember off the top of my head. You should be able to go into your screen resolution preferences and change it but it is hidden in an advanced section. It will make your whole netbook screen a bit wonky but will work for that purpose and you will see the bottom of the page again. :) Do a google search if what I am saying doesn't make sense lol....it is kind of late here...lol!

Do you know if it was changing it to a higher or lower resolution? I looked at the settings and it was already set to the highest resolution. I will try the google search tomorrow (I need to go to bed) because my daughter wasn't too happy about it today LOL! Thanks for your help!

My husband got one, and I hate it. The screen gives me a headache, and I find it hard to type on. He likes it because its so small and lightweight, but I would NEVER use one for scrapping. Ever.

I agree with that. We just use ours for e-mail and surfing the web when we're traveling (and sometimes at home). It's good for that, but it would get very frustrating if you tried to use it for scrapping.
