Another Running Question...or 2

First question is kind of a TMI question, what kind of underwear do you wear while running?
Second question, what are your favorite stretches before/after you run? I don't want to get an injury. TIA!

Tee hee... NONE, unless they don't have that pantie liner in them like some of the loose shorts... But I usually wear compression shorts or capris, so no undies for me...

It's not good to stretch until your muscles are warmed up, so I only stretch after running and my warm up is a 5 minute walk

Oh, and if you do wear undies, make sure they aren't cotton but polyester or some other material that wicks the sweat away... and I definitely would wear something with ample butt coverage, thongs would not be comfortable, ouch!!! Honestly, it's most comfortable just wearing the compression shorts and no undies, and I wish someone had told me that before LOL

That's what I was wondering about the underwear, Heather. I was thinking those compression shorts would be good, but wasn't sure if that was normal. lol Think I will pick up a couple of pairs.

Yesterday, I stupidly forgot to stretch. I am really forgetful. Now today my hamstrings are really tight. I was slower tonight, I could feel it. Tonight, I walked 5 minutes, then stretched, then did the couch to 5K run/walk and then stretched again. That might be good to stick with.

TMI Warning: I have a funny story for you on this one. I run quite a bit and wear cotton underwear. It doesn't seem to bother me. But, after reading a few running blogs, I decided to try running commando. Here's another important tidbit. I sweat-a lot-when I work out. So, I head up to the Y and I have on my new red and black super cute Nike running shorts with the liner in them. I'm feeling cute, because these are my new shorts, and they are in my college colorsed and black. Go Red Raiders. So anyway, I hit the treadmill and I'm doing a fairly long run. In the middle, I need to run to the bathroom, so I hit the restroom and when I'm washing my hands I see myself in the mirror, and I'm so embarassed. The back of my shorts are soaked in sweat. Normally my shirt is pretty well soaked, but I guess my undies normally soak up the butt sweat so I've never noticed it on my shorts. It just looked ridiculous and I sure didn't feel cute anymore. I finished my run as quickly as I could and slinked out of there. So, I went back to wearing my cotton undies so that they soak up the sweat and it doesn't look like I've peed myself.

I can't run commando either b/c I sweat like crazy. I usually use Asics or Moving Comfort (hipster or bikini) I find either don't ride up and don't really leave panty lines

I do like the compression capris but even then I usually wear something under them.

I ditch the underwear as well. If I don't have a liner then I just wear whatever. I have a few thongs that work well (I hate pantie lines) but if those are dirty...I bring out the boy briefs.

As to stretching, it is really important to do dynamic stretching before your run. It gets your muscles ready for running. I usually do the leg swings and a couple of walking lunges. Adding just these stretches to my routine has really helped with my soreness/tightness in my hips. It's also important to stretch after running, but those stretches may be static.

oh I meant to say on stretching..I run at the gym so I do a small 5m warmup on the elliptical then stretch with lunges & some other stretching against the wall (dunno what they are called I was just shown what to do so I do it) then I get a run in on the treadmill

Oh, believe me, I won't be wearing just compression shorts, no one wants to see that including me. They would be on underneath a pair of Old Navy Walking Pants/Capris. I normally wear Victoria Secret's Pink Boy Shorts, but they have been riding up while running lately. Thanks for all the advice/links and the funny story, Corey. ;)

I feel like a weirdo because I've never worn any special underwear (or lack thereof) and never had a problem. I actually read and article in a sports and fitness magazine recently that said that stretching really doesn't impact injury. I'm not sure if there is any validity to that, but it was an interesting read. I'm pretty lazy about stretching first {blush}

I like to wear the hanes girl boxer briefs when I run/workout. They don't ride up and they don't show normal panty lines in my tight capri's. I do like every stretch known to man that I can remember. I love to stretch and spend a good 15-20 mins after just stretching. :)

I run commando. I am not a heavy sweater so that has never been a problem for me. However, I always work out in compression shorts or capris. If I worked out in loose shorts or capris/pants, I am sure I would wear some type of cotton panties. Although, that would mean buying some cuz I only own thongs and boy shorts. LOL

I do a 5 min brisk walk to warm up and then stretch afterwards.

I posted this to Facebook today.....this is what running has done for my body. Of course there are some weights and other stuff in there too but, mostly running.

I still have a way to go and still working toward running that half but for the first time in 8 months I can SEE my results.

BTW...I don't know that this was the right thread for my post since this was a undies thread ;) but it'll do. hee hee

Wow! That is so awesome Neenee! I love seeing before / after photos and actually seeing the difference. I always think just looking in the mirror, that I don't see changes in myself. But when you see it in pics -- it makes you feel so awesome and proud. Way to go!!!
