Another Eye Question

I had my eye appointment yesterday, need some new glasses cause I simply can't see out of these ones anymore and it did not go well. They tested my eyes and then when they started to work on the setting my prescription I could not see out of what he said should be 20/20 vision for me. He dilated my eyes and we redid all the tests and the results were very similar, but I still could not read the dang line. He was rather perplexed because he said that is my prescription and I should see perfectly. Instead it was all a blurry mess.

He did set me up with that prescription and asked that I give it a try and made an appointment for me to come back in two weeks to redo the test as he thinks my current prescription was too strong and might be causing the issue. Frankly, that sounds nuts to me, as does the whole idea that the machine sets the prescription. So does anyone know anything at all about how this works and if this does make sense? Since I have such crappy insurance that only pays for one exam a year, I am kind of invested now and need to know what I should be asking/expecting. He did say it was "worrisome" to him and that I may need other tests, but that the eyes themselves look good. So confused right now. :confused:
 
I used to work in an eye doc's office (graduated as an optician) and this is more common than you think. If he wants you to try this new prescription and give it a try for a bit, your eyes should get used to it. If they don't however, you should be able to see him again without having to have an entire eye exam again. It would be a follow up office visit (possibly an office call fee but I'd check with the office first).

If you want, my best friend is an Optometrist and she is also a professor at Michigan College of Optometry. I can forward your message on to her and see what she thinks.
 
I have had it, too that my current prescription was too strong and they had to back it off... but my insurance is worse - I'm only allowed one eye exam every 3 years. :thumbdown: My eyes did adjust to the new glasses, but I've never really had 100% clear vision...

No Kristin. Very few places around here actually take my company's insurance, so I went to the Walmart in Plymouth, which does take it. The doctor seemed very nice and very concerned, but I just can't understand why I can't see clearly when he says I should. That he seems befuddled does not help either. :(

So Jackie, it is common not to be able to see clearly even when you are supposed to be seeing 20/20 with the glasses? Or it is common that a prescription is too strong? I wouldn't mind your friend's opinion if it is no bother. Thanks. :)
 
Bringing this back up because I have more questions.

I had another follow up yesterday and now I need to go to a specialist. Apparently I have blind spots right in the center of each eye and that is what is causing the vision problem. He says the cornea's look okay and that the optic nerves looks good for my age, so he is very concerned about what is causing the condition. His biggest worry is that this condition is often the first indication of MS or Lupus. He has asked me not to freak out, but I have to admit I am freaking a little.

Has anyone else had this eye issue and if so, what was the diagnosis and treatment? He said 30% of the time it is an indication of MS. I am terrified to look up either MS or Lupus on the internet because I know I will definitely freak myself out, especially since some of my current health issues caused by my thyroid cancer may mimic the same basic symptoms of either disease. I know there are no real answers until I see the specialist, but anything you can tell me will help.

I'm sorry you're having to deal with this.

I think you are right to not look anything up on the internet right now. From what you have said this person doesn't know what it is. What if the answer is not even one of those options? I know it is difficult, but try not to worry.

I'm sending prayers and positive thoughts.
 
First thing dont look anything up until you have a diagnosis. I learned that the hard way when they told me my husband had an abscess on his liver. See the specialist and see what he/she thinks and try not to worry about it until then. Keeping you in my thoughts til then! Hope you will get some good news.
 
Jessica is definitely right...do not google a thing until you get some answers. My doctor always tells me before any lab work or tests - "don't get on the internet, you'll make it worse." I will be ending positive thoughts your way- hopefully you will have some answers soon :)

Thank you all for being so kind. I will do my best to not worry. Let go, let God is going to be my motto for the next few weeks.
