Adjusting sharpness of jpegs

I have a feeling we've talked about this before...forgive me for asking it again. :wub:

Do you sharpen your images before uploaded? Are you using a jpeg? Do you sharpen it at 12x12 and then reduce it? How much do you sharpen it? Do you print the sharpened image when you make your albums?

I'm seeing some LO's that I just LOVE the way they look and I'm starting to suspect it has something to do with this!

I don't sharpen my 12x12's for printing, but I do sharpen the 700 px JPGs for uploading I use the Lightroom export feature to reduce and sharpen so the software does it in whatever order it does it in. When I used to do it manually, I'd reduce the JPG first, then sharpen it. I think it sharpens better that way.
 
i used to resize & then sharpen but now i just run an action that does it for me. it saves me quite a bit of time :)
 
My last couple of layouts were sharpened before posting. It didn't take too much time so I'm probably going to keep doing it.
 
This is my method for sharpening for web:
- flatten my TIFF/layered file
- resize to 700x700px
- Unsharp Mask (500%, and I think 0.2px radius? I need to check my settings)
- Save for web, then click on Optimize for file size 250KB
 
I wrote an action that will resize, sharpen, and then "save as". Definitely resize before sharpening, because it's the resize that leads to a bit of fuzziness. My sharpened 700 px LOs look much better than my unsharpened ones.

I've been having trouble sharpening for the gallery lately because the default sharpen settings that I used in CS3 have been strengthened in CS6, and I can't seem to get the level of sharpness right. Not to hijack, but anyone want to share the settings they use for sharpening low res images? Thanks!

I was noticing this in CS6 too. My normal sharpening looked a little too sharp. I'm still gonna have to play around with it a bit.
 
I thought I wrote a tutorial on this on the blog (the regular blog), but I can't seem to find it. I know there are lots of different methods, but here's how I do it. I much prefer the high pass filter over sharpening, even though there are a couple extra steps involved. I've created an action I use.

Flatten
Resize
Optional: adjust saturation
Duplicate
Select top layer, apply high pass filter
Change layer mode to overlay
Save for the web
