ACDSee Question

Ok really this year I plan to get organized...I have too many kits that I haven't used and occasionally I'll find unzipped files...

So those of you who use ACDSee...is it easy to learn? Is it really useful? How time consuming is it? I've downloaded the trial version before and it really seemed like a great program but I just didn't take the time to learn anything about it.

It is not complicated and although I don't use its full potential it is a really useful program. Unfortunately I lost my database and even the back ups wouldn't work, so I haven't anything tagged atm. But just tagging the previews as a preview, main colours and maybe a category will help you a lot. That way you can search for a colour or theme and it will show you all the previews that match your search. If you find the right preview, you right click and say take me to the file and you are where you need to be.

I really love it.

You know, I was so overwhelmed with my stash and tagging everything, that I gave up.

But tagging just the previews? That's downright genius right there. Thank you Nathalie, I might just have to do this now. :)

yeah, I don't use my tags much... but I tag previews and I have a "to scrap with" category.

My absolute favorite thing though, is to tag pictures I need to scrap. When I have 25 pictures of kids opening presents, I only scrap a handful of them... so when I need pictures to scrap, I just go to my "pictures to scrap" category and that's everything right there. I don't have to go through all my picture folders.

I don't use my tags at all, I just have way too much. I wish I had known about it when I originally started scrapping. I do love Nathalie's idea for tagging previews, even that would help immensely. I can't scrap without it, even though I don't have anything tagged, if I search for say "orange" anything with the word orange in the file name will show, which is good enough for me right now LOL

I do the same thing in Picasa. The addition is tagging things specifically for CT requirements.

I hardly tag anything anymore but I still love ACDSee. I think it's great for just looking at my stuffs & photos.

Thanks Vanessa I really like your system...I don't know if I would take the time to tag every color although I can see why it would be helpful...I think I'm going to download the trial version tonight when I get home...

Yeah, I never could get into that color thing.

I'm mainly a kit scrapper. But its nice to quickly be able to find my kit.

I love it! I had a hard time in the beginning but now I make sure I optimize and do some other step periodically to clean up my files. I started tagging all my free downloads a while back and gave up. Now that I use SSD almost exclusively I just tag those by shop and designer and that certainly helps to see the previews quickly. And I need to follow the advice to tag my pictures too - especially a "to be scrapped" - that'd be so helpful!!!!

I love/hate ACDSee...

It crashes. I can't run Bridge (the Adobe photo organizer) and ACDSee at the same time because ACDSee crashes 100% of the time. And it crashes at random other intervals as well.

On the LOVE side...well, it rocks.

I used to tag EVERYTHING...but only now use the following tags:

_PREVIEWS
Alphas
Date Elements
Fasteners
Frames

I create this set of tags for every store, which helps for stores with closed galleries and CT/designer needs. So I have:

SSD
..._Previews
...Alphas
...Date Elements
...Fasteners
...Frames

Store A
...Previews
...Alphas
...Date Elements
...Fasteners
...Frames

(you get the idea!). I do almost all of my shopping here - and everything else comes from about 2-3 other sites, so it's really not that much to set up.

Lastly - I created a special category just for all my Christmas stuff. I have tons of kits, wordart, etc - and since I have so much stuff I wanted to be able to go to one place to see it all to find the right kit for each photo without having to look very hard.

Wouldn't it be easier to each preview and have the categories:
preview
alphas
date elements
fasteners
frames
store A
SSD

And then you check the preview, if it is store A or SSD? Or do I totally misunderstand you and that is what you are doing and I just made a fool of myself? :p:blink:

I have ACD and yes it crashes ALL THE TIME!!!! I does get frustrating
- but oh well -
I tag kits

By Preview - Designer - Store and theme -
Then separate Papers...Elements....Brushes...Alpha.....Word Art and Hybrid - I used to separate elements by type - but that was just a little too much -

It's worth for me for the extract all and rename all feature!!! But I use it for tagging too. In the beginning I tagged EVERYTHING....it was time consuming and 2 kids ago it rocked when I would pull from many places to scrap a page. Well know I scrap from one kit with maybe pulling a frame or stitches from some where else and that's it. So know I just tag previews for the "event" that they are (christmas, halloween, boy, girl, summer ect...), the desinger that they are (if they are a CT kit). I also tag all alpha's and then I have a category for "unscrapped kits" so when the mood strikes I can click that category and choose from those kits first!!

I also tag templates by the number of photos they take.

I also tag all my photos by who is in them, this is also a worthy feature for me, I love clicking on my oldest DD's category and having all her pictures from the day she was born till now!!!!

I still tag stuff, though I'm way behind. One way to get started is to do a search of the filenames in your scrap folder for words like "ribbon" and "frame" and you can find a lot and tag quickly like that.

I love my ACDsee, I don't scrap without it. I'm a big mix & matcher, so it's a big help and I love being able to use it to keep track of credits. I do tag but I keep it as simple and streamlined as possible.

I tag previews, alphas & word art with ACDSee. I tag the preview with colors & season & theme (like boy, winter or halloween). I tag alphas by style - plain or shaped - material - paper, fabric, stamped and by shape - round, square, embellished. Word art is tagged by topic - boy, christmas, sentimental, humorous

Alphas & word art are really the only things I mix & match. I am a kit scrapper

Hey Nathalie! I actually tried that...but over the past few months I've kind of moved around to various stores. And sometimes a paperclip is a paperclip, you know? So for me its easier to know that I'm in "SSD WORLD" when I'm browsing through ACDSee for elements to use for a LO that uses an SSD kit. If I can't find what I want, I'll then go into my other stashes. So its really not that hard - I only have to check one or two "fastener" groups to get to see them all. And it keeps me from having to look at each preview in excruciating detail to find stuff.

HTH!!

I broke down and bought it last night...Now only if I knew how to tag stuff...

Under categories, just put a new category.

Then go to your kit, click on whatever, say the preview, and drag it to your category.

Once a little blue tag shows up on your item, its been tagged.

Then you can click on the category and see everything you've tagged in that category.

Did that make sense?

But then, couldn't click on SSD AND paperclip when you're looking for something? Or maybe that's what you're saying?

Of course, it doesn't really matter if the system works for you.

Once I get caught up again, I'm doing to find a new tagging system that works for me, not so broken down like I have it now because I don't use it that way. I like short and simple!

That is what I was thinking, Sarah. But there are many systems around and they all work for their user more than other systems do.

I personally stopped tagging kits to stores, because there were so many designers moving stores all the time. Not so much a problem here at SSD and my biggest stash is from here but either I do it with all designers or none, kwim?

Rachelle, if you need help, just holler! Vanessa already told you how to tag, did that help you enough to get started?
