A 'thank you' for the children's w/special needs thread

I read through that thread even though I don't really fall into the category, and I read payed extra attention to the autism posts. My niece is 2 and we have known for a very long time that something just isn't 'right.' You know how that goes. Long story short... I talked to my SIL about the things you all were saying, esp those of you who were glad you got an early diagnosis. She's been saying all along that she isn't in a hurry to get her checked out because she doesn't want her 'labeled' and all kinds of stuff (code for: she's afraid). I gave her my opinion that it would probably be better for Lizzy if she caught this now, then waiting for years and missing a crucial time.

She just got her autism diagnosis yesterday. My SIL thanked me for being gutsy enough to bring it up because everyone talks about them but no one had the nerve to approach her say, "Get over yourself and do something." lol! And I only had the boldness to talk to her because of the info YOU guys shared.

So thank you so much for sharing all your stories. This place is priceless to me. :wub:
 
Glad you have a diagnosis, but it is a hard one to accept. Your niece is the same person she was last week, and you all still love her. Now you know how to best help her. Hugs!
 
Ditto to what everyone else has stated. Early intervention is the key and I'm happy she got it done. It's best for Lizzy too. She'll have so many resources available to her which will help her become successful in life. It's easy to label, but remember Autism does NOT have your niece, she will overcome no matter the obstacle.

I think that's the beauty of the community we have here. This place is not just about scrapbooking. It's about life. We probably know more about one another's lives than our friends in real life. I'm so happy that your SIL was able to get the help for her daughter. We really do have a bunch of great ladies here. :wub:
 
That's wonderful--not that she's on the spectrum, but that you were able to convince your SIL to seek help now instead of waiting. Your niece will benefit so much from the early intervention!

My sister was the same with my nephew.
didnt want a label on him, but we all thought he was different.
When you now whats wrong with the kid you can give him or her the care that they need.

I agree, although having the diagnosis may be scary its actually better to be diagnosed at a young age when the support can be put in place more easily.
