One of the things Dianne and I looked forward to all week was Saturday morning cartoons. We spent most Saturdays at our Dad’s house and he would sleep in, or sometimes be working, so we were free to watch for hours. It was the one time of the week that we had the TV all to ourselves to watch what we wanted. Our favorite show was, without question, Scooby Doo. The characters were so perfect, from scaredy-cat, but very hungry Shaggy and Scooby, to smart-but-geeky Velma and gorgeous, but not-too-bright Fred and Daphne. I could never decide whether it would be better to be gorgeous Daphne or smart Velma when we “played” Scooby Doo. We loved the mysteries, which were scary enough to be exciting but not too scary for kids, and how “those pesky kids” always stopped the bad guys from getting away with their plots. I’m not sure that I understood at the time why the bad guys were doing what they did (usually to scare everybody away from treasure or land they wanted to develop) but that didn’t really matter to us -- we KNEW they were bad guys, or they wouldn’t dress up as a ghost scuba diver, Miner-Forty Niner or The Creeper.
We watched a lot of other Saturday morning cartoons and kids’ shows over the years, including Josie and the Pussycats, Fat Albert, Land of the Lost, Davey and Goliath, the Pink Panther, and all those great Hanna Barbera cartoons like Hong Kong Phooey and Penelope Pitstop. Still, Scooby remained our favorite, and I’m amazed to see that my kids now love it as much as I did!
