We didn’t make it to SMR in time to check in so we spent the night in Portsmouth. We had fun walking around soaking in the local sights. Portsmouth is one of the oldest towns in Virginia, founded in 1752 as a shipbuilding community and continues to this day as the home of Norfolk Naval Shipyard. We stayed at the Governor Dinwiddie Hotel, an older hotel with a lot of character, and had a yummy mexican dinner at the restaurant under the hotel.
