Journaling reads: It was the spring of 2002 and I had went to the Opticians Association of Michigan Expo at the Sheraton Hotel in Lansing. I bought a ten dollar ticket for a raffle drawing. The grand prize was $4000 cash or a trip to Hawaii. I went to the Expo but didn’t stay for the dinner that night when they were to announce the winner. I ended up getting a phone call the following Monday from the Treasurer of the OAM saying I had won. She asked if I would rather have the cash or the trip, suggesting that the cash was the better decision. I was in such shock I had no idea what to do and just blurted out taking the cash. I figured Chris and I could spend it on something for the house or if we wanted, we could take a trip somewhere with it. She told me that was the best decision and that she’d get the check to me very soon. A couple of weeks went by and I still hadn’t gotten the money. I called her and left a message asking if it was on it’s way or what the deal was. A few more weeks went by. And then a few more. In the meantime, Chris and I had decided to get new siding on our house with the money and the siding guys were already at our house taking the old siding off with still no signs of the money. After a few months, and numerous messages left and conversations with her, she again assured me the check was written and that it just needed to be signed by the President of the OAM and then it would be in the mail. Months and months went by....the next spring Expo was soon approaching and I finally got ahold of the President, (after not getting a response from the Treasurer) and he said the check had been signed MONTHS ago and that he was going to see what was going on. He called a few days later and was very apologetic. The Treasurer had been fired because she embezzled the money and come to find out, had been embezzling money for a few years without anyone knowing! Of course, leave it to me and my winning ticket for her to be found out! I was so lucky and unlucky at the same time! The check arrived in the mail a day later with sincere apologies. Looking back, I now realize why she suggested taking the cash instead of the trip. Shame on her!
Oh my goodness! I was so excited for you, then horrified, but now happy again! I'm glad that the situation turned out good all around :).
