I think we brought my first puppy home when I was
about four. My mother always loved black and tan hounds and wanted one. I don’t really remember much when we brought him home, just that my dad named him Sachmo, after the jazz singer. Man, he grew up to be a lazy dog. All he did was eat and lay by the wood stove. One night, a hot coal actually fell on him and singed him, but he didn’t care. He just kept sleeping.
