I've changed. Being your wife, a "military wife" has changed me. I find myself
sometimes, thinking about that girl I was when we first got married, like
she's a stranger to me. I can remember when you would have to go away for
a week and I thought it was the end of the world. If only I'd known then
what I know now, I could have saved myself so much grief over a silly week
or two. The sad fact of our lives now and the woman I am today is that life
apart from one another has become normal. We've spent 2 of the past three
years going through this and it has changed me. I feel stronger in some ways,
but mostly I feel fragile, like I'm made out of glass, and any second, the
right jolt is going to come along and I'll just shatter into a million pieces.
So I've been thinking of why it is that I'm feeling this way and it's not the stuff
I've had to deal with when you've been away, it was all hard, but it's the stuff
that's given me that little bit of new-found strength. What has made me feel so
breakable is not having you by my side. Not having you there beside me when I've been worried,
afraid or just plain lonely. So now that we're at the end, just one short
week away from the end of this deployment, I need you to know that I've taken it all
on and I've managed to keep it together somehow, but now I really really,need
a safe place to land.
