Important PSA!

BACKUP!! This weekend my computer died..wouldn't even power on. This morning I took it in to have it checked and the motherboard is completely fried. As in gone. No fixing it. Nada.

While I'm totally sick about it, b/c we just bought this PC 2 1/2 years ago, I didn't lose anything major b/c I've been very good at backing up to my 3 EHD's. All my photos/videos/scrap stuff..and anything else important I always backed up. So thankfully nothing is gone.

There was no warning at all that the computer was about to go..one day it was working fine and then next nothing. So back up people..don't lose your stuff! :)

This happened to me last year - I had only had my computer 9 months! Fortunately, even though the motherboard was totally fried they were able to replace the motherboard and everything else was unphased - all my files, photos, everything were still there. BUT, I did learn to back up more often from that experience! Now I do a backup every Sunday evening.

Yikes! That was a close one! Thanks for the reminder. My dh is pretty good about keeping everything backed up. I'll have to check with him to see when he last did so.

Nikki that totally bites it couldn't be fixed :( That is great news though that you back up everything!!

so glad it worked out for you! I have not backed up in months! :( All my los even...I really need to, ty. I need to find the stupid power cord for my EHD even :(

Although I have once lost a lot of my files in a HD crash, I'm still not great in backing up regularly... Setting a fix day a week sounds like a good plan. I'm thinking today might be a good day for that! :) Thanks for the reminder!

Ugh, so sorry! Glad you didn't lose anything, but still. What a hassle.

This is why I LOVE LOVE LOVE Backblaze. It runs in the background, backs up offsite, and I don't even have to think about it. Such a great thing to set my mind at ease.

AHHH! That is the worst Nikki! I use Backblaze too, but have never had to recover anything from it. Has anyone ever actually used the back up from there? Easy? Hard?

Oh, I "restore" files all the time from there. If I'm on a laptop and need something, I just get it from Backblaze instead of going to my desktop and putting it on a jump drive. Love it.

And Nikki - sorry your computer is fried! Glad you have backups though!

I'm sorry, Nikki! But at least you were backed up.

I've used online backup for years, and it's a lifesaver for me because I'm terrible about backing up to my EHD regularly. Just a week or 2 ago, I deleted my entire EHD backup and started over because it was so out of date (March 2011. Oops!) But thanks for the reminder--I'm going to go run it again in a few minutes. As for the ease of restoring from Backblaze, it's very easy for a couple of files but I have no idea how it would be to restore everything if it's your only backup option. IIRC they'll send it all to you on an EHD rather than making you do it online, but there's a cost.

Happened to me a month or so ago. But we expected it would happen as it had started acting a little funny, so I had managed to move over all my stuff on to the EHD. What WAS annoying was that I didn't get a chance to deactivate my software on it, so I had to call up Adobe to do that for me.

So sorry, Nikki, but does this mean you're getting a new machine?!?!?! :)

NM - just saw your FB status - woohoo!!!

lol Yes! When I talked to him yesterday he acted like he wanted to wait til he came home in July to "have a look at the old one" himself. Which would have meant nearly 2 mos of scrapping on this ancient laptop that's missing 3 keys! He ordered us a new one last night while I was asleep with a 2 TB hard drive :)

Oh and it wasn't just the motherboard on our old one..it was the processor too..apparently when I kill them I do it right lol.

Now to stalk UPS :)

Thanks for the reminder. Will do today.

I like Marie's idea of backing up weekly. Will try to incorporate that here too.

My old laptop died a couple months ago, so I bought a new one... a GOOD new one... supposedly... I spent over a grand on this f***ing thing and it's crapping out already- a couple months later!!! You never know. Computers suck! Unfortunately I run 2 businesses online so I have no choice but to have one.
