There are so many other worse things happening in the world right now, so maybe I should not complain about my problem, but I really want to cry. I have a plumber coming to the house right now because I have sprung a leak in a pipe somewhere and the ceiling in my family room, which is in my basement, is ruined. The leak is still drip, dripping away and my carpet is soaked. I can't even imagine what all this is going to cost and feel a little sick just thinking about it. I'm pretty sure I will have the money, for which I am greatful, but it will come out of my new stove and dishwasher fund. I had just saved enough and was going to go pick them out next weekend. If it cost more than that, I will be in huge trouble. Please send good thoughts my way for an inexpensive fix. :(
 
Oh mannnn! Paying a plumber is NEVER fun... seems like they get paid more that doctors and lawyers sometimes. I really, really hope it will not be as big of a problem as it seems. So sorry!!! :(
 
Im sorry. I wish you lived closer Id send my husband over to look at it for you for free. Ill think positive thoughts it is as inexpensive as possible. In the meantime do you have a shut-off valve to stop the dripping from the pipes?
 
Thanks for the encouragement. The plumber has been here and stopped the leak, except for the dripping it will do until it dries out. The water line to the icemaker in the fridge cracked in the wall, there was no water in the kitchen so I had no idea until I came down to the basement to work on laundry. (My family room is really my son's domain, and he is away right now, so no one was down here before me today.)

Because my basement is completely finished, there is no access to any of the pipes which boggles my mind now that I think about it. My house was built by a plumber for gosh sakes, you'd think he would have put in access to the pipes. Anyway they will be back tomorrow to cut a big ol hole in my ceiling and get to the pipes and the line for the fridge. Capping it off just doesn't make me secure. I want to know that nothing else is leaking in there too. And I think we need access to the pipes for the future. He said they will put an access panel over the hole and it should look fine.

No idea of the cost yet, but I imagine I will have to start saving for my stove and dishwasher again. On a positive note, the stove still works and I have been washing dishes by hand for ever anyway, so it is not the end of the world. Just disappointing.

I made sure I know where this is now Jessica. What a dummy that I didn't know before. I was so excited to own my first home and I love it, but sometimes I wish I had gotten a condo instead. The upkeep, yard work and maintenance can really wear me out. Thanks for offering to send your husband though. That is so sweet of you! :)
 
Won't your homeowners insurance pay for the ceiling and carpet?

Never thought of it Mary, but it should. I am insured to cover everything. If you were here, I swear I would hug you! :hugs:

Almost exactly the same thing happened to use last summer. One of the pipes in our kitchen broke, flooding our basement with water. Because we don't use it that often, it took us several days to notice and when we did it was already very mildewy. Gross. They had to repipe our entire kitchen because of the pipes were stuck in the wall.

The entire thing was covered by our insurance and we still actually need to redo the basement, which they will pay for when it's done. It was a huge pain in the butt, but turned out okay in the end.
 
Sending good thoughts that your insurance will cover it and you can still get your stove and dishwasher soon! We had a leak from a toilet last year. It was slow and didn't do a lot of damage, but they had to cut a hole in the basement ceiling to get to the pipes. The drywall repair was a lot more than the plumbing cost, and we never even thought to try submitting it through insurance. (Don't get me started on the time when my now 6-year old snuck downstairs in the middle of the night, flooded the kitchen, and ruined the basement carpet...)

It's so ironic cause I spent my weekend working in the backyard to make it look better and end up with damage in the house. Sometimes it feels like you can't win. I'm just hoping the plumber's bill isn't too bad and that the insurance will pay to take care of the damage. Not much else I can do. The plumber wasn't ugly and didn't have a wedding band, so maybe I should chat him up a little. A handy husband could be a real good thing. lol

Love that you are seeing a positive in the situation!! ;) Maybe it all happened for a reason! LOL

Hope it doesnt end with a big bill and that your insurance will cover it!! With any luck you can still shop for some new appliances soon!

They should pay for all of it, less your deductible. They probably won't pay for the pipe itself, but they should pay for all of the damage caused.

if you need any help, lorie.. let me know. I sold home insurance for 6 years.
 
Oh terrible but haven't you got an insurence for that?
We had something similar two years ago and everything was fixed and covered.

I'm glad you are able to keep your chin up. :hugs: I hope things work out better than you expected. It's really great that you even have savings in hand, isn't it? But I hope that you won't be out too much and you can still get your new appliances!

:D This is so funny! I'm glad you're still laughing! I'm sure it felt horrible finding that leak! I hope it's fixed quickly and easily and your insurance will help - it'll be awesome if you can still get your appliances (hugs)

I keep hoping something floods in our house so we can get new flooring via insurance. LOL 19 years in this house and we've never turned anything in to our home insurance.

Yikes! I would be crying too. Everyone has problems, so don't feel bad like yours are insignificant. Hopefully the insurance will pay for it so you can still get your appliances! I imagine they will, because this isn't a natural disaster.
 
That bites! I'm glad you're getting things squared away. I hope insurance takes care of it and it's not too much of an ordeal to fix.
 
Oh no!!!! I would call a carpet guy too and find out what needs to happen. Maybe they can pull the carpet up so it can dry!
 
Well I am not impressed with the job the plumber did. I was at work so my mom dealt with him. She said it was a different guy. The leak is fixed and the hole in the ceiling isn't too bad, but the access panel is a mess. It keeps falling out of the ceiling!!!! He cut the hole too big and tried use tape to bulk up the panel. What a joke. Because my mom is not entirely mobile she could not get down to check his work. I put a call in when I got home and they will be back out tomorrow to fix it right. Insurance man will be out tomorrow too but I don't know if there is enough damage to offset the deductible. Will just have to wait and see. Still don't know much the plumber is charging as he didn't leave a bill. Not overly impressed with him right now. Would like the not ugly one back.
