want to talk about ice...

My husband thinks I am just the weirdest person cause I can go to certain restaurants or convenience stores and just want a cup of ice. I know I am not the only person who chews on ice though. Right? I am not talking about sit down nice restaurants. Like drive-thru ones. I will ask for a cup of ice no water. But I only like certain types of ice LOL. This has been me since my first pregnancy. I read then it could be a sign of a deficiency of some type but I think it is more of a habit/stress relief type thing.

I hate ice. My teeth are too super sensitive. Sometimes I have to pour a glass of water form the fridge and let it sit out a bit before I can handle drinking it... so ice is torture. lol

mmm I love Sonic ice, CFA crushed ice (usually have to ask for it here), and QT crushed ice

i have serious issues

I am just slightly anemic. So maybe thats why. I started when I pregnant with my daughter because i t calmed my stomach and the doctors were always yelling at me that I do not drink enough water. So eating ice calmed my stomach and I got the water without having to drink. Now it is just like a habit I cannot break

LOL. I never thought about it this way but as soon I read this, I knew exactly what you meant! I love chewing on certain kids of ice. I've never ordered a cup of ice, though!

yea like some ice is softer and easier to chew. Like ice chips. Sonics is one but the gas station near us has the same kinda ice they do. The guy who works there calls my husband Ice Man lol. It is hilarious. He is supposed to charge for cups but he never does my husband

I've only started chomping it in the last couple of months; I was totally marking it off as a pregnancy craving, and I sure hope it goes away when the baby comes. It makes my huband crazy, so sometimes I stand in the kitchen with the door closed and eat it straight from the ice cube trays.

My mom said it's a sign of iron deficiency, though, so I'm going to have that checked at my next visit.

But yes. If we had Sonic here, I'd be there daily for some ice.

Sonic Ice, ftw. I've always heard it's an iron deficiency, but I'm not sure if it's really true. It's really really bad for your teeth, too. :(

My grandmother craved ice all the time (certain types especially) and they said it was because of her anemia as well. I can't chew it, either, because my teeth are so sensitive. I can't at ice cream, either, not without being in a lot of pain and it's just not worth it. lolol The special toothpastes help somewhat, but not 100%.

i have sensitive teeth too. just reading this post makes my teeth hurt.
i can't bite into popsicles either.

Its definitely true. I never craved ice or even thought about chewing on ice until I became extremely anemic and since then I crave ice like crazy. I prefer certain types of ice (like Sonic, that crushed little pellet kind) but I will gnaw on any ice available. Its an awful craving and probably why I had to get the last crown I got but I can't help it. I've started breaking it up in the blender and basically eating it snowcone style (without the syrup) to make it easier on my teeth but I can't get away from it. When I first went to my doctor for the anemia he asked me how far I could walk without being out of breath and how long I had been craving ice. This was before he knew ANYTHING about me other than what my iron levels were (a new doctor I was referred to). I was shocked. I didn't realize it was a symptom of anemia before that. However, there are other things that can cause the cravings, like have been mentioned. Mine is definitely iron related. It gets better when my iron levels go up but every month around 'that time' they jump back down and the ice cravings get terrible again.

hehe this thread makes me laugh because I remember when I was an orthodontic assistant, one of the things we'd tell patients after we put braces on them was "no ice." Inevitably, someone would say, "Even Sonic ice?" Hahaha Ice is ice.

FTR though, I do love Sonic ice. I dont' chew it by itself, but I can't help munching on it if I've gone there for a drink.

I love the crushed ice they serve in the hospitals... lol

Me too! At least now I do! When I was in the hospital for my blood transfusion (a result of the extreme anemia) I kept the nurses busy bringing me ice. At first I asked for water and after a while I told them to hold the water and bring me the ice. I swear, that ice was SWEET. It was so good! I want to stop by just to pick up some!

When my daughter was in ICU they had the BEST crushed ice and salad.... LOL!! It's a good thing its a couple hours away or else I might be tempted to stop in at the cafeteria there and buy ice and salad, lol.

My mom is always in ICU it seems :crying: , but the one thing I love about 'living' in the hospital with her while she's there is chomping on her ice!! --- oh and stealin' pieces of her steak.... since when do they serve filet mignon to the patients?!!!! My momma gets it allllll the time when she's there!! Spoiled.... lol

Mmmmmmm ..... ICE....and salad and steak..... anyone wanna go hang at the hospital? LOL!

Now see that makes me wonder what my iron level is because I am on my period now and have been for almost 2 weeks and have been craving ice like crazy. (not normal for me. Calling a doctor first thing Monday. I need to get it over with anyhow since its been a few years for my female exam just the thought of starting over with a new doctor kinda petrifies me)
