I am sitting here tonight listening to my Ipod and it occurred to me how many of the singers on my Ipod actually no longer really sing (or if they do do not get radio play time) and how much I really miss hearing them sing. Right now it is Kathy Mattea playing. She has such a beautiful voice and I love nearly all her songs but you just do not hear anything from her anymore. Then of course there is Conway Twitty and Kenny Rogers. You just do not hear them on the radio (and of course sadly Conway has passed on years ago). I miss hearing him on the radio as well. There really is nobody in my mind who compares. And pretty much all 80's style pop music is sadly kinda gone too. I just cannot deal with most of today's pop with the exception of maybe Kelly Clarkson and Katy Perry.
 
I know what you mean - not so much the country singers, but the *cough* 60s and 70s of my youth and some 80s of my younger adult years. In my car I have 3 "oldies" stations that play 60s, 70s, and 80s that I love to listen to.

Yesterday I heard Crazy Love by Poco and was instantly transported back to high school dances...:wub:
 
I am a little more of this generation maybe....but I do love the eightties so much. When Eric and I are both working on the computer he always turns on an English internet radio and they play awesome music.

I do like most of today's music aswell. I am not really into rap but when it's on I won't turn it off or something. My taste is kind of wide orientated for that matter.
But...Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton together was a song played on our wedding....does that say enough?
 
I like some of today's music, but I'm a huge music fan and like music from all different eras. Last night it was 80's British alternative rock. I rarely listen to what's on the radio though as the only decent stations we have here are country (which I do listen to some), but for rock I mainly listen to Pandora or Spotify.
 
Honestly, I hadn't noticed their lack of radio play because I only listen to Sirius XM, and they definitely get air time on their channels :) I'm not a huge fan of today's pop either. Before we got XM I generally listened to all talk or the 80s station.
 
I was just mentioning this the other day....two of my favorite singers, Eva Cassidy, and Nick Drake, both passed away long ago.
 
There are quite a few artists, still alive and still singing, that I'd love to hear more from. Unfortunately a lot of it is industry politics from what I have came to understand. They like to showcase and highlight the new and young artists.

Last Friday I went to a Jo Dee Messina concert. Everyone was like 'What? She doesn't even sing anymore!' when I told them. Truth is, she did take a break from certain things as she's gotten married and had two babies (her youngest is just 3 months old!) in the past 5 years or so but she has new music and she has been trying hard to get her new album released. She wrote a song (which will be on the new album) called 'I'm Not Dead Yet' that was a response to a phone conversation she had where she was being told 'well, you know, there are younger artists, blah, blah, blah' Its kind of interesting. A lot these days, especially in country music, it seems like the older artists are kind of skimmed over. Unless they have a new song (and in most cases its a single rather than a full album) then you just don't hear them much. I miss so many artists.

I also totally miss the 80's and early 90's pop music. I have some of it that I blast here at home and drive my family crazy but I love it. :)
 
Yea Sherri I really love country music and love Jo Dee Messina as well. She has had some legal problems too though hasn't she? One of my favorite singers Doug Supernaw does not get played at all anymore. In fact you can rarely find his cd's in stores anymore and he pretty much lost all his money and quit performing. It makes me sad for him.
 
Yep, she made some bad business decisions, nearly lost her house, etc. but came back from all of that. So many people hang on that kind of thing and its like their career is over because they are human. :( I miss Doug Supernaw too.
 
I know Doug Supernaw too Jessica. He was really good. I miss Vince Gill being on the radio every day. I love his music. I like some of the new stuff, but my heart is with the old stuff. Keith Whitley is one of my favorites who is gone now. Love his version of When You Say Nothing At All.
 
I also miss hearing Randy Travis. There are few singers who sing like him. He has a defenite sound to his voice that is unmistakable. Of course I only listen to FM radio so they do tend to focus on newer artists.
 
I love Bring On The Rain by Jo Dee Messina I just heard it the other day on my country Pandora station and was wondering WHY I never hear great songs like that on the radio anymore. Some of my old favorites are Travis Tritt, Kenny Rodgers, Willie Nelson, & Dolly. :)
 
Brook on Saturday night there is an oldies show called Country Gold. It may be on one of your local radio stations. It is broadcast across the country. I listen to it on 97.5 which is broadcast out of Lakeland/Winter Haven. So maybe check your local country stations to see if they have it. I think it starts at like 7 or 8 and goes until 12.

I will have to check that out, Jessica! I am the only one who likes country in my family. I used to listen to it all day at the barn when I had a horse in the 90's. And my grandma loved country... the old classics remind me of her (she is still alive, but lives far away). So, those older country songs are kind of sentimental to me. :)
 
I've been listening to music on Spotify. It's sort of like Pandora, but the difference is that you can choose the exact songs that you want to listen to. There's a free version, but I think it's time limited with commercials. We ended up subscribing to a higher tier of service to get rid of the commercials (not that bad, really, though) and also because you can listen to your playlists off-line on your iPhone or iPad. This is how we've discovered new artists. When you input the name of an artist, you can see a list of similar singers and groups. It's a nice way to be able to sample a lot of music. You can create your very own playlists of the exact songs you like.

Doesn't spotify post what you listen to on Facebook?? I have noticed in the News Feed that it shows what someone has been listening to on Spotify. That's the only thing keeping me from signing up.

Love that song Brook. I don't know that I am crazy about her new one though, "Over You." I think it may just be a little too close to home for me right now, but every time it comes on, I turn the radio off. Gun Powder and Lead is a good one too.

Another old favorite I like that you don't hear anything from is Jamie O'Neal. There Is No Arizona is my song. In fact I've been meaning to do a scrap page with those lyrics for the longest time.
 
I actually love current rock. I get over songs fast, I like them to be whats currently playing on the radio.
 
Other than one station that claims "plays everything" (and they do) I don't listen to radio that much because it seems like other than whoever is the Top 20 or 40 (pop, country, etc) is who they play over and over again. I will burn CDS of the songs I buy and play them in the car/computer so I can listen to whoever I want. I've got a whole British invasion going on right now, but it changes all of the time.

When You Say Nothing at All was our wedding song. :wub: I love both the Keith Whitley and the Alison Krauss versions. My friend actually sang it at our wedding though so it was a 'Stephanie' version instead. :)

Jo Dee sang Bring on the Rain for us on Friday. She started out saying "I have no idea why I am singing this!" to which we all laughed because it was pouring like crazy at the time, streets were flooded there was so much rain.

I like a lot of the oldies. I really love Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty together. Moe Bandy and Joe Stampley. Eddie Rabbit used to be a favorite and I loved Ronnie Milsap when I was a kid.

Not necessarily.

1) There's a Private Listening option. You have to remember to set it each time if you want to rely on this.

2) However, the other way around it is to set Spotify updates so that they are "Only Me" updates. (Remember that you can set for Public, Friends of Friends, Friends Only, and Only Me.) Mine are set to "Only Me." "Only Me" are not broadcast, because people can only see stuff they have permission to see in that sidebar.
