Are there any seasoned crocheters here?

when it says single crochet in back loop I am pretty sure that means the inside loop. So as you are looking at the top there are two loops you just go through the inside one and pull up a loop from the yarn then pull a loop through the two on your hook. Go across the row and then join

What about it is giving you trouble? Usually, you make your sttiches by going under BOTH the top loops (creates a V when looking at the top). They're telling you to crochet in the back loops only on round 3.. so instead of picking up both parts of the V, you just pick up the loop farther from you.

If you prefer photos to videos, here's a link that shows how to crochet in the back loops only. 3rd photo down shows where you insert the hook for back loop only.

Is that what's giving you fits or is it something else?

Yep! Absolutely right. You're crocheting like you normally do, but only into one loop, the loop that is in the back. If it's a circular piece of crochet, it will be the "inner" loop, not the "outer."

Ah, thanks. I'm not sure what I was doing, but it certainly wasn't the back loop. Try, try again!

UGH - this bootie looks so wrong. Could someone who is really good at reading patterns please count the # of stitches for each row/round for me? I can't figure it out. Row 3 has them counted out but the rest are not. I really want to finish a pair before Tuesday morning when I go see my friend.

Row one, which is really creating a round (the bottom of the bootie, right?) has 20 stitches
Row two: 20 stitches
Row three: 20 stitches
Row four: 18 stitches (because you decrease twice)
Row five: 16 stitches
Row six: 14 stitches
Cuff: 14 stitches for three rows

To decrease, you put your hook through the first sc (of the row below the one you're working on) and pull up a loop, then put your hook through the second sc and pull up another loop. You should have three loops on your hook. Then you yarn over and pull through all three loops. Hope that helps.

Lydia, you are my HERO! Thank you so, so, SO MUCH!

Yes, the first round creates the bottom of the bootie. Y'all would so laugh if you saw the monstrosity I have created right now. :p

Off to frog...

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH. No matter what I do, round one keeps ending up with 16 stitches, not 20. I'm going to bed, maybe I'll learn how to count in my sleep.

K - I was totally wrong. And, I'm getting myself all confused, but I *think* the first row has 15 stitches. Row 2 does have 20 though. Hope that helps Joana - sorry I led you astray and made you frustrated.

Well, technically the first row does have 20 stitches, but because they go back on themselves, it creates 15 (16?) stitches to use for the next row. After I posted I realized that and kept going. Believe me, having your counts after each row made a HUGE difference. So don't feel bad - you were a huge help!!!

So perseverance paid off:

My almost 5-year-old DD asked, "Mom, are you going to make more booties?" I told her I might, but that I wasn't sure yet (my fingers hurt!). She said, "But Mom! The baby only has two feet!" :D

Thanks again for everyone's help!!!:thumbup:

Aww, those are so cute! Now I want to make my 2-month old nephew something for the holidays. But first I should probably finish the hat I want to make DD. And when will I find time to do that and scrap? But I just can't resist cute little baby crochet patterns!
