If you read an article which stated that a certain percentage of the population was illiterate what would you take the word illiterate to mean?

(I looked it up and know what it means LOL just wanted to see if other people would take it the same way I do or if maybe Im just an oddball)

ETA: the context of the article was about school/education

yea that is what I said it meant too. Someone told me I was wrong that it means uneducated/undereducated and that I should know the true meaning of the word before I talk about it

I would say unable to read as well but webster's says :
–adjective
1. unable to read and write: an illiterate group.

2. having or demonstrating very little or no education.

3. showing lack of culture, especially in language and literature.

4. displaying a marked lack of knowledge in a particular field: He is musically illiterate.

so I guess technically it is both...unable to read and uneducated.....

Unable to read is the more common use of the word, I think.
Which makes it even funnier to me, that someone told you that you should be more educated, lol.

yep unable to read. I would say ignorant would be uneducated or undereducated. The way a teacher told me once. Ignorant is that you don't know any better, stupid is you know better and choose not to use your knowledge.
