gingerbread houses? (TIPS PLEASE?!)

So I bought a kit to make some gingerbread houses. I have attempted this in the past and it was so bad. Please give me some tips/hints on how to do this? I really want to do it but have no idea what Im doing
 
I took it all out of the box. I got the mini village. NOT pre-assembled :( So Im going to try tomorrow I think while the kids are in school
 
No, you can't eat it, but I don't think you'd want to eat those boxed ones.

We've never eaten them.
 
Make extra icing. I put icing on the bottom and stick it to the plate to help keep it stable. Of course, ours never look as beautiful as the others I've seen posted here.

Try the bakery at Publix. They have them down here in South Florida. They are pre-assembled and edible.
 
hot glue! i'm totally hot gluing mine this year. i had a leftover one from last year that we are using. we never eat any of it - even the candy that comes with it is gross lol. i buy extra candy and the kids eat a little of that.

next year pre-assembled for sure!
 
i can't help - LOL - every one i've tried to do has been a disaster :) maybe when the kids are older i'll try again - for now we are just doing the little foam/glittery sticker houses they sell at michaels :) LOL!

We did the little village last year. My only advice is to put together the houses and let them dry for a while before you start decorating them. L.J. was in a hurry last year and we had sliding walls every time he touched them.

They didn't turn out perfect, but he loved them anyway. Here's the ones we did...

My 5-year old and I make gingerbread houses every single year. This year I bought the little village set!!! :) We're actually going to put them together tonight!!!
I always add a little less water than the directions say, because it's always so runny that it takes FOREVER to dry, then you're stuck there holding the pieces together for like a 1/2 an hour. Not fun... I might just hot glue the pieces together like you all are saying! lol. We never eat ours anyway, so that sounds like a great idea!
 
I just did a small blog blurb over at Penny's Blog yesterday not many tips on putting one together (we just use the icing that comes in the kits and it seems to work out ok)

We are all about the foamy version too! And we still had fun decorating it. And even better, I still had my sanity when it was all said and done.
 
aww Tracy yours are sooo cute!! Not sure if I mentioned this before but your son reminds me so much of my 17 y/o when he was that age :) (he looked alot like him as well as the things you say remind me so much of him)
 
thanks everyone for the tips. I dont personally eat them but I know my husband probably will. I think his taste buds are dead LOL. Cause they always tasted stale to me
 
We have gotten the "pre-made/you assemble" ones in the box for the last couple of years. We got the train this year as my DD and nephew were going to make it together.

I had to make extra icing and the trick I learned is to add Cream of Tartar to help it harden faster! =)

Haha no!! I went out christmas shopping and to lunch with my daughter. I had planned on doing the houses but then when I thought a day with her or putting together the gingerbread city I thought no contest LOL. We had a great time!! I will probably put them off until this weekend I think and either have my husband or my son help...whoever is more interested in helping.

I have pre-ordered gingerbread house kits from our local Co-Op (Bountiful Baskets). They claim to be totally edible so I am hoping they really will be. The kids always want to eat their houses LOL.

I KNOW, right?! I would need LOTS of practice!!
 
I bought a gingerbread train kit this year for $10. Everything was prebaked and the frosting was premixed. It was FABULOUS! DS had lots of fun puttng on the candy.
