So after 7 days at sea, we're officially... (Lots O' Photos Inside)

...NOT cruise people. Just too many hot, sweaty, drunk people in a 3ft deep pool made for 12 people if you ask us. (No offense to anyone who loves this scene, it just wasn't for us).

We cruised on the Carnival Dream which is Carnival's newest biggest ship, and it was undoubtedly a beautiful state of the art vessel. Our rooms were better than we expected, plenty of space for the 5 of us, though we did get connecting balcony staterooms which absolutely helped in that department. The food at dinner was pretty good. Lunch was pretty awful / standard buffet fare. We never made it up before 9am for breakfast except on those mornings where we had to rush off the ship for an early morning excursion.

Ultimately, we just aren't rush rush scheduled vacation type of people, and for us cruising felt like we had to be somewhere at all times or we'd miss something. Worse, just when we would start enjoying something it was over or time to leave.

There were some bright spots for sure so here's the low down in photos...

Day One - We arrived at Port Canaveral for embarkation around 11am and we were onboard before Noon. Our staterooms weren't ready until 2, so we spent a little time wandering around the Lido Deck, grabbing a bite to eat, that sort of thing. It was really cool to take a look around the ship when it was virtually empty. The Carnival Dream gave us a stunning first impression for sure...

After the muster drill at 3:30pm, we headed out on the balcony of our stateroom to watch Port Canaveral fade away as we set sail...

Day Two - Was a "Fun Day" at sea and to be honest with you guys we were already having inklings that the whole "cruise culture" just wasn't for us. The kids spent the day in the kids club which was cool and weird all at the same time because we enjoy spending vacation with them, but activities are really geared toward grown-ups doing grown-up things while you're kids are doing kid things elsewhere. Very few opportunities to spend time together unless you wanted to be right in the madness of thousands of people trying to enjoy two very small pools as mentioned in my intro LOL.

Still we love seeing new places and the next 4 days would be filled with exotic Western Caribbean ports, so we were really looking forward to that part of the trip and for the most part, our ports did not disappoint.

Day Three - Cozumel, Mexico

We had scheduled an all-day excursion in Cozumel to visit Xcaret, an eco-archeological theme park on the mainland of Mexico. We rushed to get off the ship to catch a ferry from Cozumel to the mainland and after 40 minutes of ferry and 20 mins of bus ride, we finally made it to the park.

It was a gorgeous location with soo soo much to do, but we only had 4.5 hours to enjoy there, so we had to pick and choose our activities pretty carefully. Not to be missed was their underground river swim which was refreshing and lots of fun. The river was really long - like 45mins+ to swim through so it was quite the adventure with 3 kiddoes!

The park is full of animals like monkeys, jaguars, birds, etc and we got some amazing pics of the kids with parrots from the park photographers, but after our river swim, we decided that rather than run all over the park trying to see everything, we would relax and enjoy the amazing beach!

cozumel11.jpg

We could have enjoyed Xcaret and honestly the Mayan Rivera of Mexico for days, but as soon as we got comfortable - it was time to head back to the ship... Still we made it back in time for a gorgeous sunset at sea from our balcony...

cozumel13.jpg

Day Four - Roatan, Honduras

In the morning, we woke up to these enchanting views of our next stop, the island of Roatan.

As soon as I stepped out on to the balcony to take these shots, my camera lenses fogged up from the humidity instantly. It was miserably hot and sticky, but we trudged to our excursion, a day of play at the private resort called Maya Key.

It was pretty, but the water was murky, the included lunch was completely gross, the beach was tiny and as the kids gently put it, the "sand was a rip off" LOL. Still, I got a few nice shots today, so here's a peek...

Day Five - Belize

Sadly, with the heat and humidity, we opted to skip getting off the ship in this port. I really wanted to see the Mayan ruins, but Rocky and the kids were tired and trekking through the jungle with mosquitos, afternoon storms and the heat, just didn't sound like fun. The kids hung in the kid's club a bit and Rocky and I got a couple's massage which was heaven. Fat girls out there - don't be embarrassed to get a massage k? It is an amazing treat you won't regret! Sorry no photos of us in our knickers draped in big bohemian scarves for ya.

Day Six - Costa Maya, Mexico

This was BY FAR our favorite port on the cruise! Of course, we were only here from 8am to 3pm and had to be back on the ship by 2:30pm... so poo! Anyhow, we had heard about a wonderful little beach resort called Maya Chan. Run by a former cruise fanatic, Maya Chan is only open for 30 cruise guests a day. Everything is included for $50 per person and it was a little slice of heaven!

The kids played on the beach and in the water for the entire time, food was yummy and grilled fresh for us - fish/steak/chicken fajitas, amazing guacamole, chips, salsa, fresh tortillas with all the trimmings - delish! The staff came around constantly refilling our drinks and would even come out into the water to bring you stuff. It was seriously an AMAZING experience that we didn't want to leave.

Amazing.. AMAZING! That night was also our 2nd formal night and you guys have to check out this quick snap of my little man in his suit!

Day Seven - Yet another "Fun Day" at sea. We did some packing and even though Rocky and I hated the idea, we promised the kids we would take them up to the madness of the waterpark for a bit, so we did that for awhile too...

ship5.jpg

ship6.jpg

We also played some Bingo and watched a silly couples game that we won on our Disney Cruise 11 years ago :P

I hate for any vacation to come to an end because I love being away with Rocky and the kids, but we were pretty ready to be done by the time the end had arrived. Overall, I'm grateful to have had the experience and now we know that this kind of vacation isn't for us which is a good thing.

One great thing I will say is that I got a TON of family photos of the 5 of us together on this trip. It cost me a small fortune to buy them all onboard, but it was worth it and much better than a "You Better Belize It" t-shirt :P I'm really proud of our formal night portrait, so I'll try to scan some in and share in a bit.

Anyhow, glad to be home and looking forward to planning our next moreelaxing adventure away : )

Thanks for reading,

R

thanks for the run down Robin!!!! so glad you posted this because we really want to doa cruise with the 4 kids, but this has me possibly rethinking it or waiting until we can afford a Disney cruise :) LOVE LOVE all the pics!

aw that is too bad it wasn't the dream vacation :( We cruised for our honeymoon and it was awesome but I've never gone with kids. Looks like the weather was beautiful! Did you do any snorkling? That was my favorite part of our cruise.

Hey Julie,

We didn't do any snorkeling this trip. Rocky actually doesn't like to snorkel and both of the places that we could have snorkeled, Roatan and Costa Maya had less than ideal water conditions for snorkeling.

They had gotten lots of rain down there lately and it was windy both days, so not very clear water. In Costa Maya, the inland mangroves released a chemical into the rainwater that had flooded the area before we arrived and that fresh water emptied into the ocean causing the 'red sea' look in those photos. It was very rusty looking water instead of caribbean blue, but we didn't let that stop us from enjoying it that day. Still, not ideal for snorkeling and they had tons of turtle grass too.

If we had it to do over, I think we would have done an Eastern Caribbean itinerary so we could have enjoyed more of the white sand, clear blue water type of beach in St. Thomas, St. John, etc. The western itin is more of an adventure/ruin cruise which we thought we wanted to do and then didn't end up doing. Lesson learned LOL :)

See and *I'M* the type of person that would die for an onboard baby sitter on my vacation so I think cruising is for me! LOL

It looks like you guys made the most of it!!

Glad to have you back Robin...great photos too! Thanks for sharing! We just went on our first family cruise in March and I agree with you on every point. I had mix emotions about our cruise and I don't think I will do another one any time soon. My kids absolutely loved the Kids Club and begged to go all day, but I still had my 1-year-old to entertain and he couldn't even get in the pool. But we really didn't spend much time with our kids when we are on the ship. I also found myself bored on the ship (especially since I don't drink, gamble, and not interested in jewelry seminars). I also felt we were missing out on port days when we didn't have enough time to explore the cities and do everything that we wanted to do. We went on Norwegian which has the freestyle dining, which was perfect for our family because we could eat whenever we wanted and never felt rushed to do that. My husband loved the whole experience and wants to do it again. I will probably only agree to that if it is without the kids.

Loved seeing all those photos!!!

Ok I have seriously doubted I would be a cruise type of person either ... not sure if I could handle a boat and rocking on the open sea ... plus have a kiddo extremely scared of such a thing (at 16yo) ... although family has tried to convince us. Plus up until about a year ago, I wouldn't have let my kids out of my sight with a bunch of strangers ... but now I feel they are old enough to leave a situation and find me if needed. ....but still ....

...so do you find a place you would like to head STRAIGHT to and vacation at in the future??

If you ever go on another cruise you should try Disney (they'll be in Los Angeles in the next year or two)...It was the best in my opinion...Your photos are beautiful!!!!!

Ours was an Eastern Caribbean on Royal Caribbean. My hubby doesn't like snorkling too much either. He wears glasses and couldn't snorkel with them on so it wasn't as awesome for him either. We had a dramatic snorkling trip in the Bahamas where he couldn't see all these jellyfish around us and I practically had to guide him through a minefield of them. Fun times! LOL :p I was wondering where the pics of the Mayan ruins were. Too bad that didn't work out for you.

I am also not a cruise person either. Mainly because there is no legal amount of phenergan to keep me from getting sick. The only days I was not hovering over the toilet were the days we went on land. LOL!

Your pics are great! Can't wait to see the formals!

I haven't been on a cruise in years..dh and i went before we were married...never been with kids. Pretty sure it would NOT be for us! I'm a pretty schedule type person though but I too would wanna enjoy my family on a family vacation..maybe a disney cruise but that would be it lol

Glad y'all made the best of it and had a good time! Glad you had the opportunity to get some of those memories captured together as a family!! Glad to have you back "home" though :)

Rachelle, We did Disney on our Honeymoon and while it might be better now that we have kids, we didn't much enjoy that experience either. I think ultimately being stuck on a boat with gambling, drinking, bingo, trivia, and jewelry seminars for entertainment like Jenny said, just wasn't for us. We want to see the world and I thought this would be a great way to see lots of spots in one go, but ultimately it was such a short amount of time in each port that we really felt like we didn't get to see or experience much of each spot while we were there.

Jenny, we did Your Time Dining on Carnival too and that was the only thing that didn't make us crazy. It was sooo nice to just be able to say "we're hungry, let's go eat" rather than having to wait for an early or late seating. It was ideal to just go when we felt like it - so yay for that! Plus, we had an amazing waiter who was soo good with the kids. Loved him :)

Sharon, you know, I didn't think going to Mexico would be something I would want to do for a week, but now thanks to our stops in Cozumel & Costa Maya, I think the Mayan Rivera would be a fabulous place to spend a week. Part of the problem with this trip is that we've had some AMAZING vacations as a family between Southern California, Hawaii, Orlando and Puerto Rico and this just didn't match up to any of those.

Traci, We thought the kid's club and late night babysitting would be a great asset in a vacation, but to be honest, the kid's club on Carnival really disappointed us. They had some cool events, but all 3 of our kids were in different groups (2-5, 6-8, 9-11 year olds) and all of the groups had different activities. Sometimes one group would be doing something really fun while one of the other's was just having "cartoon time" or whatnot. Katie had a party one night from 10pm-3am and they dropped her off at our cabin at 3am - she loved that, but there was NOTHING going on for the little ones, so they were with us while she was out. Babysitting 10pm - 3am was awful too, they basically told the kids to lay down and watch a movie and that was it :/ Toward the end of the vacation, we had to bargain with the kids to go get a massage or play bingo for a couple of hours, because they didn't want to go to the kid's club. It was absolutely not what we expected or what was hyped by Carnival.

Thanks for sharing your photos Robin! I really enjoyed looking at them.

The two cruises that I've been on were with Royal Caribbean. I really enjoyed that cruise line.

Looks like you visited a ton of beautiful locations! It's too bad that it wasn't all you had hoped it would be but at least you know for sure now. :) Thanks for sharing your pictures with us!

You know, there's still a little itch inside me that wonders if we'd like RCL better because they have some INCREDIBLE ships, but ultimately, I think the experience is mostly the same no matter what line you're on so probably won't scratch that itch anytime soon.

Oasis of the Seas looks incredible tho...

LOL...I think they are generally pretty close...especially when it comes to excursions and timelines.

I remember the first cruise we went on the glass bottom boat excursion. That was a complete waste of time and money. Seriously all we saw was a bunch of kelp and really boring fish. LOL!

I would love to cruise again but I don't know that my hubby would ever want to.

You know, I dont know if I'd ever be brave enough to actually cruise. I guess as an adult I've become more fearful of these sort of things (watch too much TV, lol).....and now that I have children, I'm very fearful of hubby and I dying in a joint accident.

When my ex-dh and I married, we honeymooned in Cozumel, and it was FABULOUS. I would LOVE to go back there someday. Although, I enjoyed it as much as I did Hawaii with my current husband....so it would be a toss up.

Sounds to me like the kids club thing isnt all its cracked up to be. Were you nervous about leaving your kids for extended periods with strangers?

Kristen

Looks like a nice time. The river swim thing looks like alot of fun. We go over to Cape canaveral frquently as my husband likes fishing over in that area. Honestly you could have just stayed in Florida and I could have told you a million must see things here to do (None of which include a theme park!!)

Ha-ha! We did that too and thought it was a joke...certainly not what it was hyped up to be.

I was just talking to my DH about your experience and I'm glad you are sharing this info with us rather than just candy-coating it and saying it was great if it wasn't. We are saving for a vacation (it will be a few years) and part of me was really interested in a cruise. After telling DH about your trip, we've decided it's probably not right for us after all. Our honeymoon was awesome, but the child factor is huge and if it isn't a fun family time then it's the wrong vacation for us. A cruise was great for our honeymoon because it was all about hot honeymoon-type activities ;) and basking in the sun. But as a family adventure, that wouldn't be our focus. Sharing your experience probably has saved us from disappointment. I'm hoping your next trip more than makes up for the lackluster one this time!

Thanks for sharing. Your photos are beautiful.

Not sure we are cruise people either...DH doesn't drink at all, I only like an occasional & 3 kiddos....not to mention I can't imagine being in such a relativly small place with SOOOO many people.

Wow, your photos are amazing!! The stops you had along the way sound so awesome, I would love to be able to see all those places! Dh has been working on me to go on a cruise someday (I have a slightly HUGE fear of water-big bodies of water that is, and being in a huge boat that would make me clausterphobic, and be on top of that much water I always thought would freak me out). In the last couple of years, I've thought yea, I could do it and be ok on the water... LOL, I loved all your phoots, but this pic-

OMG, totally freaked me out. I feel like I'm going to hyperventilate just looking at it. So. Don't think I'll be trying a cruise anytime soon! lol.

I'm glad you shared this, though! Loved the stories about your stops, it really looks like a ton of fun - lol, minus the cruise part!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the sound of an archaeology/ruins related excursion, but I could never do it this time of year. I don't do nature, heat, or bugs very well.

Our family did a Baja California cruise a few years back, and the kids enjoyed it. The dinners were too artsy fartsy for my taste, but it was an enjoyable event otherwise. I was SUPER nervous about leaving Landon (5 at the time), but we had the pager thingy and he had a blast.

Your photos are beautiful, Robin! I have to say the $50/person/day thing you did sounds REALLY awesome. I'm NOT a schedule-every-little-minute kind of person At. All. Even worse if someone else is doing the scheduling for me.

We need a spin off thread of must-do vacations, methinks.

It must have been an incredible journey! Yay! You deserve it for all you do here at SSD :)

For me the best would be day spend in aquapark :D

oh robin! i so love ur holiday recaps! seriously! they are the best even if u dont have the bestest time! Can't wait to see ur fam portraits and welcome home!

Those photos are incredible!!!
Seemed like you had tonnes of fun!!! I've never been on a cruise before, and I'd love to one day, hopefully!!!
The more I look at those photos, the more I'd want to go hehehe...

Sorry it wasn't the vacation you hoped it'd be, but glad you still had a good time and got to spend time away with your family.

DH and I went on a cruise a few years ago for our 10th anniversary. We went in Feb. and Mexico was hot and humid then. I can't imagine going in June or July. :)

I'd love to take another one, but I think my kids would have to be teenagers before I'd go on a cruise with them. Although I'd like to try a Disney cruise sometime in the next few years, but I'm not taking my 2 year old on a boat until he's at least 5. I don't trust him.:p

Your photos are beautiful!

Thanks so much for the photos and impressions! My hubby would love to take a Disney cruise... but I know I'm not cruise people... LOL! And I'm not Caribbean people either... but after seeing your photos, I think I want to see the Caribbean!

I am so glad you shared you experience with us - We have debated a cruise for a family vacation, but after a long discussion opted for all inclusive Disney trip. - Next time I think instead of a cruise we will do Beaches. I love the all inclusive - with 3 kids - 2 teen food becomes a MAJOR expense. Like you I would rather spend the time with my kids - I would NOT be happy sticking them in glorified day care.

It all looks and sounds fabulous....but I don't think we would be cruise people either, so I can understand! It looks like you guys made the most of it though, the photos are fabulous.

Cool! The park in Mexico looks awesome. Glad to hear your review too- I like my vacation to be relaxed too- I don't want to rush around- so knowing that maybe I wouldn't be a cruise person either. Good to know! Great pics!
