Help getting rid of virus?

Geek Squad has my 2-month old laptop that has been having troubles and after their diagnostics have found that I have a worm and trojan virus. YIKES! I just did a full system scan a few days ago with their Kaspersky (?) software that came with my bundle and nothing showed up. They can remove it for $130???? Holy Cow! Any recommendations of software I could use for alot cheaper? Or should I take it to other pros who would be cheaper? I'm waiting to hear back from DH who I know won't pay that :( he's pretty technical but don't know if he knows the latest and greatest programs. Thanks!

I had a nasty virus a while back and use malwarebytes.com which is a free download and it got rid of it just like that..McAfee nor Norton either one could get rid of it or even recognized it on scans.

My son got something horrid on my computer last year by downloading limewire >:-|

I just did a system restore to a few days before that and it was fine. I had to do that again a few months ago, I'm not sure I had a virus but it just wasn't acting right - again that fixed it.

Also got mine from 4shared. Try some freeware. First download Malewarebytes from download.com Once that has run then download Anti-Vir. It's a free virus program and works great! Hopefully between the two they will be able to get rid of your virus.

ditto again. Plus I'm almost positive that I got a bit of malware from photobucket too. Not that it was photobucket's fault, but people infect things and upload those all over. It's a good idea to run several programs to catch all the bad stuff. I don't think any program is perfect but in combo they can solve a lot of problems. And a lot of them are free too. I'd personally try doing that before having the Geek Squad do anything.

You gals are the best. Geek Squad asked me if I used Facebook (I live in the stone ages and don't use it - ha) - guess they've seen alot from there? So are those just from visiting the webpages or do you actually download the virus somehow?

So if you're getting them from 4shared what are you doing to prevent it from happening again? Do you download the zips and then immediately scan the files?

Thanks again for all the help! K

for me, my computer would just restart (when I wasn't working on it - I'd just walk up and find it) and give the "windows has recovered from a serious error". I did get the "blue screen of death" the other day that gave me an error and then went to restart in the safe mode. Then yesterday it wouldn't boot up at all. I had ran my virus software just the other day but apparently it wasn't catching the ones I had. The Geek Squad ran some diagnostics that found it?

Can I just say I REALLY APPRECIATE you gals on this board! you always come through with answers, opinions, past experiences, and make me feel so comfortable asking questions!!!!

quite using 4shared.

It's not even in the downloaded files. It's through the site. I just don't go there for any reason anymore.

hmmm - don't think I'll be using 4shared anymore! definitely don't want to get a virus!

Kim - I hope you are able to get rid of the viruses without taking your computer to the Geek squad!

I've gotten them from visiting blogs too, someone other than the blog owner will attach a virus to it. I usually know when I start getting weird messages in my internet browser or you get redirected to a site you didn't want to go to.

I think I'll avoid 4share as well!

Thanks so much for all your help. That malwarebytes is good stuff and we were able to clean it up without paying someone.
