Mac questions

I currently use my husband's old computer (I still run a computer with 1 GB memory and Windows XP), but he was really sweet and got me an iMac. It's been on my wishlist since Apple released the iMac models, the color ones. I'm counting the days to get my hands on it !
This thread is really helpful !

Is there just something in particular that causes the crashes because I am running Vista and have never had a problem with my computer crashing or the blue screen or any of that. At all times I have PS, Lightroom, at least 1 of my 2 EHD's, my Downloads folder and my internet browser (well this does get closed occasionally LOL) open and I have yet to have my computer crash on me. Am I just in the lucky PC club?

Count me in the club too. My HP laptop is almost 2 years old, and I've never had a crash or a blue screen on it. It's got 3GB of RAM, a 250GB HD, and a super fast graphics/video card. I always have PS open with other programs (definitely FF, usually LR) and no issues.

I haven't gone Mac yet, but I'm thinking about it. Although my husband may divorce me, and my Dad may disown me (both computer guys, lol). Jordan would probably prefer I get the sickest PC laptop available no matter what the cost, before he would let a Mac in the house. (Yes, he hates my iphone too, LOL!).

haha, I said the same thing but my dad is still talking to me and my DH has even mentioned replacing his PC desktop with an iMac. Although my dad was incredibly jealous of my iPhone, but he went and got a Google Droid instead. :D

Ooo, that's exciting! I'm really hoping I can convince my DH to replace his dying PC desktop with something like this. Before he left he actually willingly went into the Apple store to look so I figure there is hope, haha.

I think it was the 1TB HD that hooked him. You know men...the bigger the better. :D

Hahahahaha, I love it! That's what my Dad would do too. My HP is only going to be 2 years old in May-ish, so I've got time to try and work the Mac angle. I'm a pretty happy PC girl though, so who knows what'll happen, lol!

I was wondering the same thing. I have a 2 year old Dell laptop and have never had one problem. My dh has a Dell laptop (not near as nice as mine though) and also no problems. My boys have desktops and nothing with theirs either...they game on them and everything. (we are all running Vista). I will say mine takes a long time to boot up though...I need to do a little cleaning on it, but I load skype and yahoo each time I open too...those seem to take a little time.

I switched to Mac in Nov and the only thing I noticed different (in using photoshop) was that you drag something you want to open into icon on the task bar rather than into the open window. Other than that, I've had no problems.

My Mac boots up in less than 30 seconds and restarts in 15. I LOVE that if I leave a program open when I shut down my computer, it reopens it upon start up..I often leave webpages up or Stickies on so they reboot back up :)

I never had major problems with my PCs unless something mechanical was going wrong or I completely overtaxed the computer. I would say my Mac is somewhat more stable and definitely faster but I still get hangs or the spinning beach ball of doom, haha. Just yesterday I walked away and came back and the screen was frozen. So it does happen with Macs, it just seems to be less often. Or maybe I'm just uber hard on my computers. :D

Mine gets the spinning beach ball and hang ups as well, lol. Mine will even just shut down at times, lol. I don't think I'm that hard on it; I think it's just a diva :P.
I learned to first use computers on a mac, back when it was a wee little screen (and still have the thing because I can't toss anything away, lol). Then I turned to pcs because they were cheaper. I didn't have a Mac again until a year ago when i inherited my dad's. It had CS3 on it already as well as Illustrator, which i find mystifying and have only opened twice, lol. The colors are so true. Even tho with this new HP laptop i got with Windows 7 has PSE8 on it, I've never used it. I can't go back to it after the Mac,lol.

Really?I never have that happen! My computer's the new line of iMac with the new Snow Leopard OS so maybe they fixed it?

My Mac was originally a Tiger OS but was upgraded to Leopard later. It's a 10.4 so it's not as new and shiny as the ones out now. But, I'm not kicking it out the door, lol.

I have an older MBP (early 2007) and it's done it to me both in Leopard and Snow Leopard. What gives me the most trouble is actually Firefox. It is WAY buggier on the Mac than on the PC. For a long time there was a bug where if you went up to the Help menu while in Firefox, Firefox automatically crashed. :D

thought of a question....

How do you organize your fonts on a Mac. I have a slight addiction and use The Font Thing on my PC. Does that work for Macs?

I was getting the blue screen last week and figured out it was an anti-virus software that my internet provider gives you free. I mean literally my computer would start and then crash and I could not figure it out. I uninstalled it and it was fine.

For those who are complaining about start-up taking so long I would say mine takes less then a minute. I think shut-down takes longer then start-up but I have everything I can turned off on start-up so all Im really booting is windows and whatever anti-virus/firewall I have. Makes it load alot quicker!!

So the iMac arrived yesterday and to my surprise, they delivered someone else's mac instead of mine. I called my husband and he said they would come the next day and exchange boxes. We bought the old 20"version. The one they delivered was the new 21.5"version.
Today DH calls me saying I could stay with this one and no charges will be made. I'm so glad I can't contain myself. I'm still testing (just plugged it in) and will probably start working on it for real next week, after we move.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Mac!! I switched just about a year ago. I still work on both Mac and PC. My desktop primary computer is my Mac but I switch to my laptop ( PC) to work in the evenings. I hate the switch!! haha!! I'm getting a Mac Book for Valentines day so I won't have to make the switch anymore! Yay! I really had no problems switching over and I had never used a Mac before. I tried to buy the switching over book when I was buying my new Mac and the girl who was helping me told me I wouldn't need it. She was right. It only took me about a week to get use to the differences. I will never have a PC again. I ditto everything Susan said!

Same here, my Dell laptop is almost 2 years old, I run PS, Dreamweaver, ACDSee and various browsers and other stuff, without problems at all. It goes slow occasionally, but that's usually after I haven't turned it off for days and days LOL.

I have had a lot of problems with my PC, it was custom built and cost me a LOT of money, it's 3 years old. No one can explain it. It is quite annoying.

This is me as well. I turned off everything but what was necessary for start up, and it starts up no problem.
