Cake decorating help!

DS turns 2 in a couple weeks and I want to make a cupcake cake where you arrange the cupcakes together and then frost it to make it look like an actual cake. Like this:

but in the shape of a big "2". The problem is, I don't know anything about decorating cakes, so I'm wondering what frosting bag/tip I should use, if any? Should I just arrange the cupcakes and then plop some frosting on and smooth it out? Should I put a thin layer of frosting on each cupcake before I frost them as a whole?

I'm sure one of you talented ladies knows a thing or two about this :) Thank you :)

Man-that is one of the best looking Cupcake Cakes I have ever seen-I really love the idea of a two made of cupcakes...I think I might take a bit of frosting and "glue" the cupcakes together and then try and add frosting to the entire thing-with a soft hand...I also think that a piping bag with a small star would add the same effect along the edges as the pumpkin!
Geeze-I really wasn't much help was I?

That is a great idea to "glue" them together :) I was worried about them sliding around when I try to frost them, so that's a great tip! Thank you!

Anyone else have any ideas about frosting it? :)

I am certainly not an expert, but my guess is you have to use a special frosting to get a layer like that on top of cupcakes, otherwise the frosting is going to collapse into the gaps.

I have made two cupcake cakes for my kids and I just frosted the cupcakes and put them together into the shape. And I just used regular frosting. For the spider web cake, I glued the cupcakes down to the platter by putting frosting on the bottom of them. With the guitar cake, I placed the unfrosted cupcakes into the shape and then picked each one up and frosted it and returned it back to its spot. Yes, they are very amateur, but my kids were happy with them.

I have no idea on decorating one yourself, we had one made for Kyle's 1st birthday in the shape of a one but I took the easy route and just ordered it from the Walmart bakery! It was really cute though :) For his 2nd birthday last May his party theme was Diego so we had them make one that looked like a forest/river and had Diego & Baby Jaguar figures on it and it was really cute too!
