i'm so itching to get one of these - we have a Rebel XTi/400D and i've been just buying extra lenses (low f-stop, IS and prime ones), tripod, a speedlite and faster CF cards for it to try to get it to perform faster/better but i stil want something to handle low light better. Just looking for some feedback re: the 7D (think it's called that internationally??).

TIA

It's high on my wish list too, definitely not gonna happen anytime soon though. But a girl can dream!!

Bwwaahhhaahaa. That made me giggle. If I sold my small child I *might* have enough money for that, lol. It looks fab, and if you get it, I am sure I will be way jealous.

I don't think the 7D is going to be the answer to the low light situation. If you want something that handles well in low light with little to no noise then you need to look into the 5D Mark II. I did months of research when I was buying my camera and one of the ones I was looking at was the 7D. I decided not to go with it because there were several features that I just didn't see myself using plus there is no support yet for the RAW files with the camera and so I was not able to use my Lightroom and CS3 for editing with it. I am sure the supports will be out soon, I just wasn't patient enough.

so from ur research it doesn't shoot RAW?? Why would they make a DSLR like that these days?!?!
i read this in a review:
A Picture Style button on the back of the camera lets you switch between nine colour styles quickly, a Q button shows your current settings on the screen, press the RAW/JPEG button and the camera will take the following photo in both formats, and if you press the Info button twice a digital level will appear on screen to ensure the horizon appears as it should in your landscape photos.

Not that i shoot RAW often but i want that option if i'm gonna spend this much - i havent wanted to go to the 5DMkII cos i think my EF lenses are useless on the fullframe body

ahh ok i miss understood what u were saying about the RAW files -apparently LRBeta3 manages the 7D RAW files fine

Yes! It does shoot RAW. I have no clue about the Lightroom beta 3. I have Lightroom 2 and CS3 and I know that the RAW files are not supported by either of those and from my understanding I was going to have to upgrade to CS4 when the new RAW supports come out because they will not upgrade the ACR for my CS3 since CS4 is now out. I only shoot in RAW so I had to be able to open my files. That was half the reason I didn't go with the 7D. After spending that much money on the camera I didn't want to have to turn around and spend hundreds on upgrading my software as well.

Also the 5D Mark II is compatible with most EF lenses so you shouldn't have a problem. This is straight from Canon website on the 5D Mark II:

EF Lenses
The EOS 5D Mark II is compatible with all Canon lenses in the EF lineup, ranging from ultra-wide angle to super telephoto lenses. Canon lenses employ advanced optical expertise and micron-precision engineering to deliver unprecedented performance in all facets of the photographic process. Special optical technologies, such as Aspherical, ultra-low dispersion, or fluorite elements are featured in the universally acclaimed L-series lenses. And Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer technology is featured in select lenses to minimize the effect of camera shake. Through Canon lenses, photographers can truly maximize the quality and liberating performance of the EOS 5D Mark II

If you have the money for it and are looking for the right camera for low light then this is the way to go. Of course, it's much easier for me to spend someone elses money:D

Amanda, LR 2 supports RAW. It just converts them to NEF files, which from all that I've read is a better format anyway because you don't have to worry about EXIF sidecars. All the EXIF data is in the NEF.

Yes, it does read the files but they look really bad. I know of several photogs that have this camera and are having to use the editing software that came with the camera because of this very issue. One lady even posted the difference in the shots from LR2 and the editing software with the camera and the difference is AMAZING! LR makes it very dull and yucky. I am pretty sure it's in the process of being fixed but it is not right yet.

Oh! Ok, I'm sorry. I thought you meant LR2 didn't process RAW at all, my mistake.

I just opened my Lightroom 2 and it popped up that updates for the file supports of the EOS 7D and D3'S are ready for download so it appears it may be fixed.

good to know but i'm going to try to hang out a it for my purchase (everything's more expensive in Aust grrr) cos i just bought a new laptop - havent loaded anything on it yet (cos it came with Vista and i'm waiting for my Windows 7 free upgrade CD to come via slow snail mail from somehwere probably in Asia) but it should be sooooo much faster with photoshop than this old thing
