ISO Wheat Free Allergy recipes for holiday cooking

My friend of over 25 years just found out her dh has a wheat allergy...he lost a LOT of weight before they finally figured out what was wrong. She doesn't have a lot of time to "try out" recipes before the holidays with this drastic change she will have to make in her cooking.

...so I wondered if anyone has any TRIED AND TRUE holiday baking recipes (i.e. sugar cookies, etc.) that they would share so she would know which recipe would be successful and tasty.

Helpful hints on this would be appreciated as well!

I would love to scrap some recipes for her to add to our "Holiday Recipe Album" that we bake from each year.

Thank you very very much!

Sharon, check out this blog. If you scroll down through today's post, Shauna has a bunch of gluten-free baked goods recipes. Since GF=WF, those will be safe to use.

I buy *the* best brownie mix and it's gluten free .. I'll swing by the market tomorrow and get the brand name.. seriously no one ever can tell.. They have other mixes too (all sorts of cookies, breads, cakes etc.. though I've had trouble with the cakes).

Is it Cherrybrook Kitchens, La? They're very good!

Also, Betty Crocker has some gluten free products out now. I haven't tried them, so I can't say how they are. Another brand (that we have tried) is Namaste. They're pretty decent. :)

I also have a friend with Celiac and she has a blog where she shares her gluten free recipes:

She also has some links to other good sites.

Good luck to your friend and her hubby! That must be a pretty hard transition to make, especially this time of year!

Thank you all very very much! I am going to see if Hy-Vee's health market department has the brownie mix...would love to make today and bring over to him tomorrow for him to munch on while we make our "old recipes" ... and then share these other ones with my friend so she can figure out where to start with them!!

Thought I might see if they have GF/WF pretzels there so we can dip them in almond bark (gee I hope there isn't any wheat/allergens in almond bark...does anyone know???) ... he likes to munch pretzels. ...I'm just hesitant to make things because I don't want to "hurt hiim"...kwim?

Sharon, it's always best to thoroughly check food labels, especially for wheat since it can be in some things that aren't obvious on sight, yk? You can be CERTAIN though, that if it is certified gluten free, it is most definitely wheat free.

As for the pretzels, Glutino brand pretzel sticks! I buy them for Devin, even though he's no longer on a GF diet. He LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVES them--more than the Snyder's of Hanover pretzels he used to eat.

Will it SAY "wheat" in the description or under a different "alias"??

I just called my friend when I saw your post ... she is going to try to hunt down those pretzel sticks and said to be sure to tell you "thank you"!

I'm sending the links to all of these sites to my friend........she will really really love it! Thank you ladies ... I know this will lift her spirits and make her dh's tummy happy ... he really needs to put some weight back on!

It won't necessarily say 'wheat' if it's a hidden wheat product, but wheat is one of THOSE allergens that is supposed to be listed as "may contain wheat" or "processed in a plant where wheat is processed." If it's below a certain number of parts per million though (or not covered under FDA food labeling laws)--it's not required to be labeled that way. Then it boils down to just how severe his allergy is/how sensitive he is to wheat.

Oh, your friend's DH will be SO HAPPY going gluten-free and finding out how amazing he can really feel.

My DH has been mostly (he's willing to have a little gluten in a few things that don't bother him much) gluten-free for the last month, and it's like he's a different person. He had no idea that other people ate a meal and didn't have horrible stomach pains, etc. afterwards! Actually, he's thought he was lactose intolerant for the last 15 years, but now that he's eliminated almost all gluten from his diet, he's discovered milk products don't bother him at all!

I've been so impressed with Meijer's (don't know if you have one of those near you) and Kroger's selection of GF foods. They have all sorts of goodies: pretzels, granola bars, trail mix, chips, cookies, cake mixes, brownie mixes, etc. Of course, they're more expensive, but I've been overwhelmed with the baby and trying to wrap my head around this whole new direction in our life, so I've been happy to invest a few more dollars in snacks that I can guarantee won't make my husband sick.
