I'm seriously under 2 gigs of memory right now on my lappy. I have no idea how this is happening. I've emptied my recycle bin and transferred tons of stuff to my EHD. I want to delete my temp files, but don't know where to find them. Where are they?!?!? (I'm on Vista if that helps.) What else do I need to do?? HELP!!!

Ok first thing...are you out of hard drive SPACE or having problems with your RAM (aka Random Access Memory)? You are referring to the "memory" but speaking of "hard drive space".

In other words...Memory think of it like in your brain...how much can you do at one time and remember.

Hard drive space ... how much room is left in that filing cabinet to put more pieces of paper?

What browser do you use? Internet Explorer ... Mozilla Firefox ... Google Chrome?

Let us know and we can tell you where your temporary files are...but they should not be taking up an excess of hard drive space and causing you problems.

Okay...next... open up MY COMPUTER (the icon)... you will see your hard drives most likely labeled:

Local Disk C ... and you may have more than one drive listed like that....what are they?

If you LEFT CLICK (mouse) on the C drive...look at the very bottom of the screen...
Space left =
Total size =

Let us know what that says for the C drive...and any other drives it may list (DVD drive doesn't have a capacity list...fyi)

In Mozilla Firefox you can go to Tools >> Options >> Privacy to stipulate how you want info to be saved to your computer, such as how long you want your history saved, what cookies you want to save, and you can clear all this information too.

Good luck!

Okay for the C: drive it says 1.82 GB space free; 221 GB total size

The only other drive that might apply is titled HP_RECOVERY (D:) which has 2.02 GB of free space with a total size of 11.7 GB.

Okay, phew! Just clearing my cookies got me up to 11.3 GB of free space! Thanks! I'll keep looking and may download that program you suggested, La.

Ok...you really are talking hard drive space. Yes you need to get it cleaned off and right away.

I would suggest going into your C drive... you can right click on folders and choose PROPERTIES... see if a folder is especially large...

for example my Sweet Shoppe Designs folder is 20 GB in size...I own a lot of kits! ... do you see folders larger than that on your hard drive? with GB behind them? If so, tell us what the folder name is and size...maybe you have some duplicates tying up space...or something corrupted...

DO NOT TOUCH THE HP_RECOVER (D: ) drive!!!!! Leave it totally alone!!!

I'm going to bed here shortly...but will check first thing in the morning...but it looks like some other girls are watching your responses to help you too!

If you want an easy way to see what folders are taking up the most space on your drive, there's a program called TreeSize that you can download that will do that for you. I used it when I still had my PC and it was great for figuring out where all my hard drive space kept disappearing to.

It's free and you can download it here: http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/index.shtml

I second that program La recomended!! It is sooooo awesome. It clears up alot of space on the hard drive and does it all automatically with just one click. I d/l'ed it after another user here recomended it and it freed up like 10 gigabytes the first time I used it. Oh I would recomend deleting cookies/temporary internet files at least once a week.

one other thing is you might want to run the disk defragmenter. It helps to make sure all the info on your hard drive is in order and running efficiently. You can do this by going to start-all programs-accessories-system tools-windows defrag (or just type in defrag in the search when you click on start and it should pull up)

In Vista go to the control panel and select "System & Security" and then click "Free up Disk Space" the defrag is there too.

(I hope that's where it is, I'm using Windows 7 and it is a little bit different than Vista)

For Vista it's
Control Panel>System & Maintenance>Administrative Tools>Free Up Disk Space

im running windows vista also and I dont go to control panel to open defrag or clean up temp files....maybe its different depending on the manufacturer of the computer. mine is a hewlett packard and everything I need to do the maintenace is in the system tools under accessories

I also wanted to add you can set up the defrag to run automatically. I think mines set up to run either every week or every other week.
