My dog has heartworms.

So yeah, mine has them. DH took him in yesterday to be shaved and have a checkup and it's a pretty significant case but he's not feeling bad from them right now. The vet says we won't start him on the shots until it's cooler b/c right now it's so hot it would be a shock to his system. Here's the thing though...we were about to start trying to find a new home for him! I mean I love him but he's a cocker and pretty high maintenance as far as grooming and stuff and he digs..like giant crater sized holes in my yard. And he barks constantly..at NOTHING. The dog used to be my baby, but you know, kids come along and priorities change and honestly I just can't give him the attention he needs. Now that we live in the country, he's filthy all the time and his hair grows a mile a minute so we have to haul him to the vet to be shaved (no groomers for about 40 miles) and last spring when he literally dug up one of my dogwood trees...I mean it literally fell over... I knew he needed a new home. Well, now he has heartworm..so who's going to take a dog with that right? and the best part? it's going to cost 600 dollars to have him treated!! Yeah..DH was pretty much not happy at all yesterday b/c he's never cared much for the dog anyway. But what can we do right? He won't let him suffer so he'll pay the bill and looks like we'll be keeping him around longer than we thought :)

Well treating him might give you a rest from him. I've heard that it makes them extremely worn out and they just want to sleep all day. I sure hope he's feeling better soon and you get the situation all sorted out!

It's not that their worn out its you can't let them get excited. My dog had heartworms when we first got her, threatment is a bit of a pain, unless they've changed it in the last 7 years. You have to take them 2 days in a row at the same time each morning to get a shot, then you have to take them back in a month for the last one, I think.

If they get too excited one of the heartworms could move I guess and kill them. Something weird like that. I just know we weren't allowed to let her play or run, she pretty much stayed in her kennel, plus we had another dog that got her all excited.

Sorry Nikki.

aww ((nikki)) sorry to hear that. I gripe about the price of heartwork prevention pills for the dog but in the scheme of things..40 bucks every 6 months is totally worth it...for their health and the pocketbook

Im sorry to hear that...maybe in the meantime between getting the treatment and deciding to get rid of him you could invest in some training for the dog so he wont be prone to dig and be so excitable.

I'm sorry to hear that Nikki. And it reminded me that we need to take Sandi monster in for her heartworm preventative. We're actually 2 months late on that :( Hopefully they can get him treated and well again, and maybe he will chill with the digging.....ours does it too. Mole holes all over the side of my yard.

Awww, sorry to hear that Nikki! I was going to suggest the same as Jessica...maybe he just needs some obedience training to stop the bad behaviors...
