Aaaagh! Stupid passport crap!

So the border between the US and Canada is now closed unless you have a passport. DH and I are planning on going to Oregon this summer in August, so we need passports for ourselves & Avalynne. So I filled out all the paperwork (in October mind you), and then we had a minor set-back when I realized that our gaurantor's passport had expired. I then had to refill out Ava's info...

But that was all set straight, but I haven't been able to get to the passport office (over an hour away). Finally, yesterday, my mom and I went, and I made sure to get DH to sign a form saying that he was authorizing me to submit his application for him. I rounded up our birth certificates and 1 other peice of ID each.

Stopped for lunch before going to the passport office, and hand my mom Ava's application to sign (she was our NEW gaurantor), and realize that DH HASN'T SIGNED AS CO-APPLICANT. And we are over an hour from home - no chance to get it. Curse and swear and kick myself over forgetting... But oh well, I'll just do hers next time I'm in the city. I'll just get DH's and mine for now.

So we carry on to the passport office, I get in right away (no line - woohoo). I decide to do DH's first. I pull out his paper authorizing me to submit his application. I hand over the photos and his ID. The lady looks at it, flips over his health card, and guess what? DH HASN'T SIGNED HIS BLINKING HEALTH CARD EITHER! So she couldn't accept his application because she needed 2 peices of ID and 1 was invalid without a signature!

I was SO mad!!! I had made a special trip into the city to do our passports, only to find that DH apparently is signing challenged or something... Now we have to go in AGAIN, and DH is going to have to take time off work to do it, which means no pay for half a day. Grrrrrrrrr!!!!

At least they only take about 2 weeks to get!

I hate passport crap! It's been ages since we needed one, but we'll have to get them done sometime in the next month or so.

Your DH...I can't say anything about that LOL

I would've been sooo tempted to forge his signature! lol! :p

Luckily we have an office in our town that we went to when we needed our passports to go to Russia. They don't make it easy though!

We don't have our passports either, we were supposed to do them last year but we kept putting it off. Although Des and I have debated getting the Enhanced Driver's License, even though we would have to drive 1.5 hours to get one. Plus, we don't know anyone near us who can "guarantee" us. Stupid requirement I tell ya.

Thankfully the kids don't "need" them yet if we drive across (under 16 only needs a birth certificate).

I totally would have forged DH's signature. But I guess you can't do that right in front of the lady!

You shouldn't have needed 2 pieces of ID...we got ours with just 1 each (other than our birth certificates). Alberta Health Care cards aren't accepted because the back of the card is only signed if you want to be an organ donor, you don't need to sign it for it to be valid.

Sonja, a doctor or dentist can do it...they just need to have known you for 2 years. The guarantor rules just changed, but before it had to be a professional that you'd known for 2 years - now it CAN be anyone with a passport. It makes it easier, but the other way is still an option. :)

I had his birth certificate too, but she said that only confirms that he is a Canadian citizen and I needed to have something that confirmed his IDENTITY - a SIN number, a healthcard (they have to be signed here - ours we put a special "Organ Donor" sticker on the front) or photo ID. I couldn't take his photo ID because thats his driver's license, and he broke and then lost his SIN card. So I had to take his health card which wasn't accepted because it wasn't signed. Blah!!

Ugh! We had to get passports for our two boys recently and it was a pain too. We both had to be there and it took the post office an hour to get us through the process. Try keep a three year old and a baby occupied and happy for an hour at the post office - Yuck!

OK If it doesn't work you might still be able to get through without it.. they are saying they are having a grace period and it might last until the end of summer, as of right now they don't know when its going to end. I was reading an article the other day - because of economy worries I think is what it boils down to they are worried its going to deter people from coming across the border and losing tourism dollars.. I think it was in the globe and mail? I think.. LOL

They are allowing another grace period?? Thats crazy! They've been giving grace periods for over 2 years now... I'd read a few months back that as of June 1, there are no more exceptions, period. I wonder why they are loosening up?

Either way, we'll be getting our passport. I think it depends on the border crossing, time of day, and the gaurd you get. My friend and her DH went across last year, without passports, and they had a REALLY hard time getting through. I'd rather make it easier, lol!

Ahhh, I see. But they don't take his license, they give it right back, so as long as he wasn't driving you could have taken it. Even if he HAD been driving, and got stopped, there's a 24-hour grace period to show the license if he's not carrying it.

Oh, and I did SERIOUSLY consider forging DH's signature on Ava's application, but I was too scared! There were too many other documents with his siggy on it, I was scared that they might catch it, lol. And then there was NO way I could sign his health card without her knowing what I had just done, lol!!

Yeah, I realized that after as well... Oh well. I'm making him take a half day off work to punish him, lol! MEN!

LOL...you're mean! ;) Remember, in punishing HIM that way, you are meaning you can't buy something awesome with that money he could have made... ;)
