So I was woke up tonight to loud men talking outside. (I had my windows open) So I angrily get up out of bed and look outside. It was 3 police officers walking through my neighborhood. They were doing a search and were headed with flashlight to behind some of my neighbors houses. Then last week my husband heard gunfire. I'm so so sick of having problems like this. I shouldn't be woken up at night to police and guns!! *not the first time this has happened* So again another night of me sitting awake keeping my eyes and ears open with a freaking gun of my own by my side.

I need a new house :(

I'm not really in that big of a town, but it seems crime has gone insanely up in the last 5 years. I really don't want to move. Our neighborhood wasn't bad when we first moved here, so that upsets me even more. Honestly my hubby and i don't have the money to move right now. We are very comfortable here and happy 95% of the time. I just sit and think... what if?

ugh!!!!!! I don't know what to do anymore  has anyone else noticed a crazy peak in crime where you are??

Sorry you're scared. I hate that feeling. :big hugs:

I'm pretty sure we live in the same town. I've lived here my entire life and crime has definately gone WAY up! It has grown a lot since then but still it just seems like there are too many areas that keep going down hill crime-wise. These were nice neighborhoods at one time too. So sad. :(

I'm outside of town and our neighborhood seems to be ok up to this point. But there is an area not far away that I would NOT go any where near at night. Worse is that my kid's school is in that area so we often walk through it.

Oh but I did live just down the street from West Jr. after we got married and that was scary! I'll never forget the day that I was on the phone and saw three police men jump over my fence into my backyard with three guns. I had my baby in my arms and didn't know what to do. I hung up and called the police department who told me to hide in a closet or basement. WTH?!!! They wouldn't tell me anything else except that noone was stalking our home. Turned out the person ACROSS THE STREET was harboring a fugitive. NICE. We couldn't afford to move either but got out of there as soon as we could!

Im sorry to hear this!! It was the same way where I live years ago. You used to be able to leave yours doors/windows unlocked and not worry now I have them locked 24/7!! We even hear helicptors flying overhead looking for the people who have broken the law (home invasions, drugs, robberies etc). This was unheard of years ago. Maybe if you all got involved in aneighborhood watch program and got some neighbors involved you might be able to improve the conditions? Also getting some good lighting installed helps (if thats is a possibility of course). I know how it feels though. It totally sucks not feeling safe in your own home.

oh janny!!! omg!!

So I think we do live in the same town ;)

I'm over by lake of the woods which is nice, but also really close to the bad side of town. My husband and I really didn't expect this side of town to have so much crime. There are so many reports of robbery and shootings here.

My husband and I have only lived here for 5 years. We both come from small towns, not stuff you really expect.

Now my thought is children. We are trying, and that is what worries me the most.

Uh, I don't think I would be sleeping with my windows open. I don't anyway and we live in a rather safe area.

We were talking to our neighbor yesterday about the problems after my husband and our neighbor heard the gunfire. Yeah they both have guns loaded. That to me is soooo ridiculous! I think for men that is their neighborhood watch program. Tho we do keep an eye out for each other which is nice.

I think alot of this increased crime comes from the economy being so bad. The desperation some of these people feel when losing their jobs/homes drives them to do things that they might not normally do.

Another thing you could do is start calling the police dept and making complaints and request extra patrols for your area. The police presence might deter some of the crime and give you a little more peace of mind.

hey! We're not far from each other. I'm on the East side too! I wonder how often we've passed each other in the store and didn't even know it?

LofW is spotty when it comes to good and bad areas. It's always been that way. Heck all of this town is that way unless you live in the Cascades or Highlands but who can afford that? My parents built up north in a new area and hate it there because the crime is so bad in the development behind them. All brand new developments too some with really expensive houses! :( We bought our house from them and they have told us many times that they want our house back. Too bad... LOL!

haha we probably do!! ;) Yeah I find that it is really spotty in times... atleast we aren't over by the mall. That area is really bad. Im sure sometime soon we will look for another place. We were kinda thinking over of Nifong out that way. Pricey but nicer. :)

And Jessica I agree as the economy went down... crime went up. Hopefully things are starting to settle economy wise, maybe crime will too.

I'm already feeling better... nothing has happened in the last 2 hours. ;)

We live in a very small town in North Florida and we have never had anything stolen from us. We leave our doors unlocked our car unlocked, just a pretty safe neighborhood. My son bought with his own money a brand new camo yamaha 660 4 wheeler, I mean this thing was nice. Put $2500 worth of accessories on it like tires and rims, well someone last month someone decided they wanted it and stole it. I got a call from the sherriffs office sat. they found it in the bottom of the river. I was so upset. You know he had made 3 payments on it. Mess with me thats ok but mess with one of my kids, that makes me mad.

Wow Susan. That's scary! Call me a sheltered, naive, little princess but, I've never been exposed to anything like that. Our town only has about 2,000 people in it and we hardly ever lock our doors or anything. It's sort of an "everyone knows each other, so lets look out for each other," type deal. The worst we've had is someone stealing our pumpkins around Halloween. I hope things shape up soon!!!

That sucks Susan but I know EXACTLY what you are going through. A little history. I live in a house that I was practically raised in. My grandparents owned this house and it's a somewhat small town and was SOOOO safe and a comfortable place to be years ago. I moved to Florida with my parents during middle school until I finished a couple years of college then I ended up moving back here. My grandparents were still here but my gram was VERY sick. I lived with them for a while and helped her out a lot. Then I met my (now) hubby and we got an apartment together nearby. Well, shortly after I moved out my gram passed away. My grandfather passed away a year after that. So his one daughter who was in charge of everything put the house up for sale and we decided to buy it cause it was always a nice neighborhood. Well, wouldn't ya know as soon as we bought it something in another town 20 minutes away happened and it brought a TON of people over to this area to live and it all went WAYYYY downhill after that. We started having a lot of drug problems, shootings, etc. and better yet, there is a huge empty lot beside our house so things were happening right in this lot that I could see daily/nightly. And as each year passes it gets worse and worse to the point where my hubby and I are physically stressed & sick. There have been 40, YES FORTY, break-ins on JUST MY STREET (my street has 4 blocks) in a one month period. My aunt who is 88 years old just had her house broken into also and she lives 2 streets away from us.

My hubby had me learn how to shoot and I too have to keep a gun nearby at night. Very sad. :( We can't WAIT to get out of this area. The only somewhat good thing is a few of our neighbors which are right beside and across the street from us are great people and we all tend to look out for each other.

We have. There are an increasing number of homes in foreclosure near me... I mean, A LOT... so they're being used as squats or, more likely, being bought up by investors and rented out... which, hey, wouldn't be so bad, except that the investors buying them aren't too picky as to who rents it. Sooo, yeah... long story short, when we found out that we would have to let our house slip into foreclosure, we weren't too upset. They can have it... we need to get the heck out of Dodge while we can... before it gets too bad. It's sad to have to leave under these circumstances but I really think this is a blessing in disguise and the big guy is watching out for us here.
