Camera Talk! :) 50mm lenses!

Okay, so I think I'm ready to take the plunge & get a 50mm lens! I have a Nikon D40x. Which lens would you recommend to me? I really have no clue since there are a few different ones! Thanks!

I have the f/1.8 and I love it. The f/1.4 is even better in low light.
I'm not sure of the compatibility issues with yours, but I think you have to make sure that the lens has it's own autofocus motor, otherwise it won't autofocus.

I am so gonna get one as soon as I get my rebel back (yes, it was recovered from the girl who stole it for anyone who remembers by getting robbed story, not sure what kind of shape its in yet though as I haven't seen it just that she tried to pawn it and it came back as stolen).

Pretty sure that if you want to go with the 50mm for that camera you need to get the AF-S lens so that it will auto focus. If you get the AF one you will need to manually focus all the time :)

I honestly hated my 1.8, maybe I just got a bad one, but my auto focus would never work. If I were you and could afford it, I'd go with the 1.4 or 1.2

yes. this is true and for that boooooo to nikon!! boooo!!

I guess it depends on how much you want to spend. I had the Canon 1.8 and it was a very good lens. The 1.4 is even better, but much more $$ and for just every day use, I'm not sure if it's worth the extra.

that's because anything lower than the D60 won't auto focus on the nikkor 50mm lens. it's not the lens it's the camera/lens relationship per the camera man at wolf. it's the cameras fault.

Well, I guess I'll be waiting until I can upgrade my camera then, b/c I have no clue how to manual focus! HAHA!

Well you still could get it. To shoot in manual focus you just change the setting on the left (i assume its also on the left with your camer) by the lens where it says AF and M. To manually focus all you have to do is adjust the ring on your lens. You can still shoot in auto (or a or s or if you shoot manually). Exposure doesn't have to be controlled manually. It is a fun lens to play with and I bet even with using it for focus in manual you would still like it. Would be a great way to practice :)

Oh, you're awesome Kristin! I've always wondered how to do manual focus & couldn't figure it out! But, now I get it! HAHAHA! Maybe I'll go ahead and get it then! :)

You might try renting it before you buy it. That way you know you don't mind having to focus it. Some people do. I don't like moving myself around, I prefer to move the lens. I rented a 1.8 50mm over Christmas & didn't love it. The focusing wasn't an issue for me but I take so many photos of kids moving off into the distance the lens really didn't work well for me. It was ok, but I'd rather save up for a 18-200mm because I have zoom issues .:)

I know a couple rental places online have been mentioned here before by people.

I do know that you will have to use manual focus with your camera with the 50mm....not sure if anyone else posted that or not since I haven't read any replies!
