Ok, so the colors of our wedding are black and white with red accents.

I found THIS really cute tote bag and instructions at Joann's (I have the physical handout). My BFF also got me a really cute book on quilting with some fun projects in it, including a cosmetics bag. So I thought it would be cool to make the tote and the cosmetics bag as part of my bridesmaid gift. (I was going to buy totes, but why not make them if I can, right?)

So the question now, is do I make all the totes the same, or do I make cute individual ones? I'm going to make one for myself in black with red handles and get my married monogram embroidered on it. Joann's is having a good sale on fabric this week so I'm going to at least get the stuff to make mine. But if I make them all black with red handles and get their initials on it, I can just buy 1 long length of the black fabric instead of 12 different small lengths.

I'm suffering from a major bout of analysis paralysis (and not just on this) today, so what do you think? ALL black and red, or individual for each maid (5 maids plus me)??

What about making them all the same (black with red handles), but adding some kind of different accent to each one to make it unique? Like a ribbon going around the top or something. Check out Etsy for different ideas - there are TONS or purses/totes on there.

I didn't vote because my answer was kind of in between. ;)

Me too!! It makes it easier on me but then I can also customize them a little for each maids personality.

THANK YOU Mary!!!!!!

Yup!! :) Totally agree with Mary! I did this for the gifts for my bridesmaids too, the flower on each tote bag was different. You're going to have so much fun making these! (And if it's not fun, stop...LOL).

Hahahaha, good advise T!! I'll totally stop if I'm hating the projects. I have enough wedding stress.

I can't wait for Mikkel to come read this. She wanted to make bags for everyone going on their cruise/wedding and I totally busted on her for taking on too much. Of course her totes were way more complicated and she was making like 30, but still. LOL!

oh wow that is a neat idea and I agree that making them the same color as yours then customizing them would be really neat. The ideas of what to customize with gives you a lot of options as well.

Am I too late!?!?! Some one else might have suggested this already...but what about all the same for the 4 bridesmaides and your's and maid (matron) of Honor's are the same!?!?!!? Since she is kinda "special"!?!?!

Hmmm....I like that idea too! Lol! Decisions decisions......
My sister is my maid of honor and will have special flowers and I'm going to buy her a necklace to wear. So I think her being special will probably be taken care of enough :)

I think you got great ideas and I suck at this kinda thing so I just am gonna go along with the crowd. I wanted to say how sweet you are handmaking the bags though. I know they are going to mean that much more because they are coming from you!!

Joanns has coupons for 40% off a single item. A single cut of fabric is considered a single item. SO, if you use the same fabrics for all the totes, you can get 40% off one of your fabrics, saving lots of money.

They will take as many coupons as you have at the same time, too.

I agree with Mary too...why make more stress for yourself if you don't have too. Besides getting one big piece of fabric is easier, just get a little extra ;) you never know!!! I can't wait to see them.

What a fun idea! I love Mary's idea too! I love that you are making these for your girls. I just got my girls their jewelry that I wanted them to wear for the wedding. I make jewelry, but didn't start till after we were married. I wish I was doing it before then so their jewelry could've been extra special! Oh well. LOL! :) You have to show pics when you're done!

WOOT! I bought the fabric to make these today :) Instead of plain red handles, I got red with white polka dots, I thought that would be more fun. I bought extra fabric too, if I don't screw up too badly I'll make a few extra for myself as shopping bags :)

De-stress and avoid drama as much as humanly possible when dealing with weddings. I say give everybody the same thing.

*oh I see now you already decided! sorry!* Can't wait to see what you make!

Naturally, after spending a ridiculous amount of money on fabric last night at Joann's (Jordan wants me to MAKE a duvet cover, so I spent a good chunk of $$$ on that) I get an email from them with a coupon for an additional 10% off my entire fabric purchase :cursing: :glare:

I figured it out last night that the supplies for both the totes and the cosmetics bags come out to like $7 a set. SUCH a better deal than buying them! WOOT! The only thing I didn't buy was waterproof fabric for the inside of the cosmetic bags. I think I'm gonna just skip that and then if they get messy they can just throw them in the washer.
I have a hybrid project to finish tonight otherwise I'd start making 1 of these right away, lol. I'm so excited!!
