I'm going to respond to this very strongly. First, Obama is not Clinton (just like McCain is not Bush). 'Nuff said. Second, I hate to say it but the first President Bush closed down the military bases and cut military spending too (I know this because I was affected by this) and it was his policies on this that Clinton was saddled with (the closings took place in 1989, 1991, 1993 and 1995 and Clinton did not take office until 1993 so the schedule to do these were put in place during Bush's term), so please don't put this on the Democrats. While Obama has definitely been for us pulling out of the war in Iraq, he has also been looking at Afghanistan as to where the root of the problem is and does not have plans to cut the military, but rather boost it.
Before I get criticized, I consider myself an independent, which is why I listened to and looked at the facts before I made my decision. I would have been fine with a McCain presidency too. In fact if he had run against Kerry instead of Bush last election, I would have gladly voted for him.
As for the person who said she wasn't visiting this site because of our positive thread on Obama winning, it is this intolerance that dismays me the most for this country. We need to respect each others' opinions, as we have done so at this site for the most part.
 
Wow--this turned out to be way more inflammatory than I intended. I'm so sorry about some (well, one) of the comments that were posted in this thread. I think everyone should be able to express their views politically, even if they differ from my own. It's over now, and I will continue to support and love my country and work towards making it a better place, which is what I would have done no matter who is in office. I think this is a wonderful site filled with wonderful people and I am glad to be a part of it.

My thoughts! I'm not happy but the most we can do is just accept it and live and hope and pray that we're wrong and he really is as great as the world paints him.

Still not happy about him "making history by not swearing in under God"

so sad that God offends so many that this is seen as victory. :thumbdown:

Well said!! I consider myself an Independent as well. Sometimes I have voted Democrat and sometimes I have voted Republican. When it came time to make a decision - I looked at how they stood on the issues important to me and made my choice. Although I believe that Obama is a good speaker - to me that's all it is right now - talk. Promises made to secure himself the seat.

I am not happy with the outcome and seriously worried about the future of my family - but I am going to put my faith in God that Obama is the person that should be in the office right now and hope that Obama can deliver some of the promises that he made and help to unify this country.

I will say that today - my kids have been really harassed by Obama supporters. One girl came up to my 14 yo and said, "How does it feel bitch? Now maybe you can go get your own country to live in and get out of here." WTH! I sure hope this is an isolated incident on the division that Obama's winning is causing.

It's this type of stuff that worries me. Uprisings and civil war over presidency. :(

I'm sure it's happening all over the country, just like it would've been the reverse if McCain had won. This, sadly is just how free speech works. Ignorance combined with this right is a sad sad state of affairs.

FWIW, I'm Independent as well and didn't make a true decision until after about 16 hours of poring over their plans and the non-big-media outlets and everything I could find about them. Knowledge is power, and in this case I agreed with Obama. I voted republican in the last election because Kerry was a total doof but I regret putting Bush in for a second term.

As for the inflammatory post, you TOO have a right to your opinion, all I ask is that you please respect the other posters on this board, the ones who share your views and the ones who do not. What I am truly proud of about this election year and how it played out on the Sweet Shoppe Boards. We showed love and compassion for everyone who had an opinion, and if anyone is unable to reflect at least respect for the other side, even if you do not agree, I ask you please do not open these threads and enjoy the other aspects of our community that aren't so empassioned :)

Oh man do I ever know what you mean here. I just couldn't vote for Kerry, but totally regret putting Bush in for another term. Ugh!

I may have said a lot about Obama here, but that's how I feel. I don't fault anyone for voting for him. That's your right and you all saw something in him that I didn't. But, I have faith that he won for a reason and I hope that reason is to bring some much needed unity to this country.
 
Well said Paula. I went to get a drink and thought to myself, as much as I disagree with Obama, I could never out a friend or aquaintance for voicing their beliefs. If they didn't believe so strongly they wouldn't have said as much and who am I to damper their victory? I am happy knowing that whatever happens, I trust that my faith in humanity will pull me through this disaster that the presidency has created. I'm not so scared over WHO'S in presidency, but the battlefield it has created amongst citizens.
 
I'm not really depressed about who won since I didn't vote for either of them, but I am worried about a Democrat president with a Democrat congress feeling they have been given full support of the nation to make sweeping changes (because I don't think that they have. I think people voted out of anger as well as out of support). And I'd be and have been worried when it is the other way around. That situation, no matter which party dominates, always leads to overreach, which then leads to backlash from the other side and there is never a chance to meet in the middle.

As a Nation we should be on our knees. We should be praying for our leaders, whoever they may be. The Old Testament is full of stories about God's people being under oppression from unGodly kings & rulers .... what did they do? PRAYED. God allowed those men to be in power for a reason, just like we are seeing today. One day we will be able to ask Him why, but today is not that day (at least it isn't for me LOL)
I too am scared for many of the same reasons .... I just have to trust that MY GOD and the democratic system we have in place will be able to balance obama's socialist ideas. Only time will tell.

I guess it was time for the pendulum to swing to the other side ... we as a Country have been walking a mid-line for far too long. I just hope that his term is 4 yrs not 8. PLUS congress could change in 2 years.

I think a long term Missionary trip is a good idea ;)

I'd like to know where you heard that he will not swear in under God. I do not believe that to have one shred of truth in it.
 
Cheltzy, depression doesn't begin to describe it. The only shining light in this darkness is that they do not have a fillibuster proof senate and there will be congressional races in two years. Ever heard that saying, you may have won this battle but you have not won the war? We'll be back in 4 years after the country has been run into a ditch. I hope it won't be, but I'm pretty sure those of us who voted McCain will be saying "I told you so" with a huge frown on our faces. People will surely get what they asked for (please note that as Joe the Biden warned, the threats from Iran and Russia have begun). That's all I can say. I'm glad it's over. Let's just go back to scrapping and hope politics won't invade it for much longer.

BTW, McCain's speech was fabulous...and I'm not even a fan. It was like it was a different speech writer than all of his other speeches...perfect speech...and I felt it came from his heart and not a piece of paper. And he instantly quieted the "boos" when Obama's name was mentioned. Classy.

I am sad many of you are depressed, but I think the country as a whole is needing a change because they are scared. I think the economy and the war were big issues for so many people.

Unfortunately not everyone can be happy and to be honest, I have been depressed and scared for 8 years now, so I do sympathize. These's so many issues that can be discussed as to why we favor one candidate over another. I just tend towards the liberal view of things. I just hope that instead of being scared, we give Obama a chance and let's just see what he can do.

What did she mean by this Paula? Is your daughter/son not an American? I don't understand why someone would say this to a child-Was is a grown up person? How did this person know who your daughter/son supported? If it was a grown up-how sad. If it was another child-still sad but on a different level.

Wow. I feel 100% better! I need to learn not to listen to my dad! He's USUALLY pretty educated. I just found it to be debunked. Sorry for the confusion. I feel tons better myself! I should have done my research on that! I just learned that today and that was what threw me for a loop. Damn me for feeding in. If that's the case I can support Obama again I reckon. :P


ETA: I'm still a McCain supporter, I just mean I'm not AS depressed. I have my beliefs and I can accept Obama, but that does not mean I am for him.

when it's all said and done, i believe obama to be an very very smart man and also one who claims to be a christian. i can't and won't take that away from him and i respect him for it. i think in the end he honestly wants the best for our nation even if many of his fundamental values don't align with mine and again i have to respect him for that. i'm ok today. there is a brighter light shining in on me. i'll continue to speak the name of my Savior everywhere i go and my prayers for our president will still ring loud in our home. we're gonna be ok. this is know.
 
While I really disagree with a lot of Obama's plans, I wouldn't jump to conclusions that we will immediately be "doomed" to a socialist society. I do have faith in our checks and balances. The president can't just make up laws and put them into effect... we have the House and the Senate... and the Justices. Don't forget that they are there to prevent total rule by one man. SO, I'm hopeful. :)

I feel for you Paula and can definitely share your pain. It is absolutely unbelievable as Shannon said. My girls and quite a number of other children have also been bully'd at school for not declaring openly whom they would vote for. I had told my girls to not get into it but it was very sad watching them go to school knowing that there were going to be lot of people very upset today. I won't lie it is kind of scary to hear their talk because in all honesty their parents are so not like that - or I hope not.
 
I am very worried about the outcome of this election. I can say that I am grateful that Prop 8 passed along with other similar ammendments. But that's a whole 'nother thread. :) I don't like Obama. I haven't from day one. I don't trust him. John McCain isn't my favorite person either, but I think he had the capability to get the job done and do it right. Now we'll never know.

We are a low-income family, so I should be overjoyed that I'll be qualified for assistance. And we'll reap benefits from Obama's tax plan. But at what expense? It makes me sick. We stay at the same income level and we get to keep our money AND get some of someone else's OR we can try to improve our standard of living ourselves and have less money because we are being taxed to death. Doesn't make much sense to me if you want to increase the standard of living overall. Oh well.

I'll just keep praying that God will direct the leaders of the country and I think that everything will work out eventually. And if he does send the country to hell with his socialistic policies, we're just one step closer to what we know is coming anyway, right?

This is why I am glad mine are little- and I want to keep them that way! They voted at school on Monday only the candidates were Pig and Cow. Pig won.
 
Natalie voted at school too...she voted for Obama, when I asked her why she chose him, she just said he is a nice person. I asked her about John McCain and she said he looked nice too. She came home today and said Barack Obottom won..lol..

I needed that laugh! That is too cute. My daughters school voted as well. She attends a conservative private christian school so it is not hard to guess who won their election!
 
As a conservative, home schooling mom, I am very scared. :( I have tons of faith in my God that things will be ok, but I know that sometimes things get worse first and all I can pray is that I have strength in those times. I have been sooo sick over this.

I will say that this community has been amazing though! It's awesome to be so respectful in such controversial topics like politics where we all feel it soooo deeply. {{hugs}}

Shannon, all three of my little punkeroos were born in Utah. The girl that confronted my DD was a 14 yo african american girl at their HS who assumed that since my DD was white, that she supported McCain. Why she would tell my DD to go find another country to live in, I have no idea and I don't want to speculate.

I called the school and talked with the principal and he has scheduled a school wide conference tomorrow during first period to talk to the kids about the election and the results in an effort to try to get them to understand tolerance.
