gasoline?!?!?

yea it probably does. I saw it on the news a few months back that some guy did that to his car and I believe he was filing for a patent on it. Im not sure if he did file or not. I asked my hubby about it and he was the one who told me about the hemi. It is defenitely an interesting idea. Did a search online and it said alot of cars being produced in Japan are going to have that capability(yet not be available in the US?? not really sure of the reasons on that). It seems to me that with technoology being the way it is we should be able to build an inexpensive car which would increase fuel efficincey (spelling??) and decrease emissions at the same time.

Well like Lynette said, most automotive related technology gets held up in red tape thanks to the gov't being so wrapped up in oil.

Everyone always points to the cars of the 60's/70's/80's and how fuel efficient they were. Part of the problem is that cars now have a LOT more safety requirements. These things add weight to the car. Weight is the enemy of fuel efficiency. Which is why SUV's are such gas guzzlers.

BUT. Like Lynnette said, they should ABSOLUTELY have this ish worked out better and have cars getting much higher mpg's than they currently are.

Chevy is touting their "Volt" for 2010 I think. No gas up to 40mph. Doesn't help much after 40mph though. Not acceptable. For me anyway.

in the 70's they thought they had the answer and had a car engine running off of 95% water! the pistons only need a small amount of oil to combust! will this ever happen! i don't think so.

NO!! lol, don't stop!! I'm loving this thread, I have to admit I know next to nothing on these topics, and it's awesome to learn about this and hear your opinions!

LOL! As long as you guys don't care! LOL!

I'm in the market for a new car soon, so I did a bunch of research on hybrids and ethanol and the like. If hybrids weren't so tiny and ugly, I'd give them a shot. It's better than nothing as far as I'm concerned. But, they cost more upfront. And at this point, I can't do that. So, no hybrid for me. (Plus Jordan is ADAMANTLY against hybrids for some reason.)

at this point the cost of hybrid doesn't out weight the cost of gas! they are too expensive, imo.

Yup, it's out there somewhere. But the car makers and oil men will never let it come to light, lol.

It's Ed Begley Jr. And that is all I have to contribute to this thread right now. LOL But thanks though girls, because I'm learning a lot!!!

yep that would be it!! LOL thank you I was trying to think about his name and it was on the tip of my tongue thinking about it and I could picture his face in my mind but just couldnt think of the name

See the real issue is no matter what alternative source they choose to go with, you're going to need government intervention in order to get the fueling infrastructure in place and until you have enough fueling stations, people aren't going to by the cars. It's all just a big catch-22.

I know in California they've been pushing the hydrogen-fuel cell cars at lot and the government has been working to get hydrogen stations in place. They had one installed on our university campus when I was still in college. From what I know about it it seems like the most promising alternative source. Unfortunately until they find something that can at least meet or improve on the convenience of gas, people simply aren't going to switch over.

We've been looking at getting a new car too and were hoping to get like a compact type SUV since we could use something with more space but the gas mileage on them is crazy! Like 15 mpg! We were looking at the hybrid versions for some of them but like others said, the cost really doesn't make much sense. Plus the battery in the hybrids dies over time and it's several thousand to replace it which eats even more into the cost. I actually wish hybrids hadn't shown up because I think all they've done is distract people from demanding a true alternative resource.

Our gas right now is $1.32 a liter, which is about $5 a gallon. When my daughter was born 3 years ago, gas was something like 73 cents a liter. Our milk is $7.11 a gallon. And they wonder why people are getting fat....it's because eating healthy is so expensive and we're putting all our money into gas! The economy is going to h#ll because of greed.

Actually...the technology IS here! A soldier needs power to work a device? He simply pops out a solar panel that is like unto a BLANKET and voila, has power.

Government, military...they've got the technology. I've even heard (no research on this one) that the oil companies buy up the alternative technology (if that's not a monopoly, I don't know what is).

What I've been looking forward to is the Air Car! It runs on compressed air. Air is free, and it would only take a little bit of gas to compress the air that would take you miles. I was reading last year that they planned to have them in India this year! In searching for information, I found out that by 2010 they plan to have them in the USA! They are quite ugly, but once the technology is available, I'm sure that something can be done about the aesthetics that we wouldn't mind spending a little more on.

The scary thing is that I wonder how safe the cars will be.

By the way, people advertising 30 mpg on the freeway...I laugh! Our 10 year old Camry gets 33 on the highway, and at least 28 in town! We got our car through a junk yard and it's been through two accidents, and still runs that well! 30 from an SUV, that'd be impressive. But give me at least 50 from a car to impress me.

sadly, I do know some of the engineering behind engines, and there is only so much you can do with the current technology that is being used. Lets move ahead into the future! The only people who are happy are the oil companies and the politicians...and we all know that they live in a different world than the rest of us anyway. The sad thing is that EVERYONE sees through it except for them, and they just sit on their high horses with their huge profits and don't care that they could be sending us into a 2nd Great Depression! It does no one any good for the rich to get richer by making the poor poorer.

Ugh, exactly Lynnette. I wanted an SUV too, but Jordan veto'd that pretty quickly. I'm looking at the Camry. It's a full size sedan, so it still has decent "cargo space" and a roof rack solves the skiing/snowboarding issue.

And actually, I looked into that issue on the hybrid batteries and it's not true. Here's the article I read about on it.

But I definitely agree that it would've been better if they hadn't showed up since they really do just distract people from the real solution.

Oh thanks for the link! I'd heard that they could go from 70,000-100,000 depending on the brand but it's good to know that's just the warranty and not a guarantee that it will die at that point. :D It's funny because we'd heard the Saturn Vue was coming out with a hybrid version so we went to the Saturn dealership here to check out the size and style of the car and the salesman was SUPER down about the hybrid version. Basically saying that he would never recommend anyone to buy a hybrid, ever. I thought it was rather strange considering they have one coming out! :D

how is it possible that oil has dropped 30%/barrel but the price of gas has only gone down 10%...freaking criminals! :cursing:

just my rant for the morning.

MY DHs and my sentitment exactly. It's not a government by the people and for the people anymore, it's a government for big oil companies and insurance companies. Don't get me started.

Ya I just love how on the day the news reports oil prices have gone up on the market (futures market, meaning a couple of months down the road), the prices shoot up that day or the next day. Yet when the prices fall like they have been doing per barrel we don't see that savings ever!!! They are crooks and our congressmen and senators won't ever do anything about it cause the big oil companies are too chummy with them!!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!

Col, I'm with you on the whole ethanol thing. It's just a bunch of crap. And don't even get me started on cellulosic ethanol--it's today's equivalent of cold fusion. Scalable technology for it DOESN'T EXIST. But people seem to think that because maybe, someday, it could, that's a reason to press ahead with ethanol as the next technology. And it's NOT GREEN, either, despite the propaganda. It's less bad than oil, certainly, but definitely not a green fuel. Until we start changing our fuel consumption habits, no stopgap measure put in place by politicians (including, sadly, the one I intend to vote for) will help. With a degree in economics, this is one topic that I could go on and on about...

Ugh! I KNOW!! So nice to talk to people who have a clue about this. My other friends are clueless and the arguement goes round and round. They love to say that ethanol will decrease our dependency on oil. Um...NO! Because you have to use energy of some kind to MAKE IT and that will most likely be OIL and since it's less efficient than just using oil we'll be using more OIL to make it! HELLO?! Drives me crazy.

A commercial came on last night for a congressman down in DC and one of the first bullet points was "decrease our oil dependency". I was shouting at the tv "How are you gonna do that?? DON'T SAY ETHANOL YA JERKOFF!!" Jordan was like ummmm.....we can't even vote for him, calm down. :P Oops! LOL!
