Penny's Overlays (new in store today)

Does anyone know if these will work in PSE? I would love to get them if they would work. I was actually looking for some last night to buy but couldn't find any that were made for PSE. Maybe this is my lucky day!

I would assume they do, depending on what sort of instructions Penny included. But even if her instructions don't work in PSE, there would be other ways of using them so that you can use them. :)

I hope they do since I just bought them without reading the specifics!!!

I just bought them too, assuming that since they are PNG's they'll work like those SBS overlays.

they were too awesome not to resist! I seriously have an addiction to overlays now. I use them on every LO i think!

They are .png overlays. The instructions included have you use the magic wand tool to erase the area of your picture outside of the overlay.
Becky's testing them as soon as they download! :)

If they are pngs they should work. How I use some other overlays like that in PSE6 is select the overlay layer and then click anywhere outside of the overlay, then go to the paper/picture layer you want to use the overlay with and press delete. It should work that way.

Good quesiton, I need to know, too. I use CS3 usually, but sometimes break out PSE6 for certain things.

I'm in love  with these overlays!!!

If the instruction say to use the magic wand for the area around it, it will absolutely work in PSE (at least in PSE 6). That's the same instructions as "those other" overlays, which I have and have used in PSE 6. I don't have Penny's yet, but am pretty sure they would work the same since it's the same instructions.

I bought this overlays and I'm a bit confused with the instructions LOL ... I wish there're pictures of the instructions one by one ...
I am confused with the magic wand and the expand thing ... anyone can help???
Oh yeah ... I forgot to mention that I used Adobe PS and PS2

Sorry it took me so long to get back on here to post. My little one has been a handful. Well, they do work on PSE. I am so excited :)

Here is the LO that I completed last night. I wanted to find an overlay to use on this LO but none that I found would work with PSE, that is until Penny came along. So here are the before and afters.

I think it came out pretty good since it was my first time to ever use an overlay. What do yall think?

Hey Charlize, I don't have PS2 but I'll try and explain it as best I know how.

Drag the overlay into your layout.
Place it above your picture, and if necessary resize either your photo or the overlay to the size you want.
In the tool bar, select the magic wand (it literally looks like a magic wand - a stick with a starburst kinda thing at the end).
Make the overlay layer active (highlighted), and then with the magic wand click anywhere outside of the overlay.
Go to select > modify > expand.
Select 1 or 2 pixels depending on how thick the outside is.
Now make the photo layer active (highlighted), and hit delete. Then unselect everything (no more marching ants), and you're done.

I think it looks awesome! Thanks for sharing!

auch ... this may sound stupid LOL ... I know the magic wand ... I just don't know the meaning of the way to do it ... err ... let me bring up something here:

Drag the overlay into your layout. ---> I know this
Place it above your picture, and if necessary resize either your photo or the overlay to the size you want. ---> I know this too :D
In the tool bar, select the magic wand (it literally looks like a magic wand - a stick with a starburst kinda thing at the end). OK, I got it ;)
Make the overlay layer active (highlighted), and then with the magic wand click anywhere outside of the overlay. ---> anywhere outside the overlay??? what does it mean? the photo size should be as the same as the overlay, right?
Go to select > modify > expand.---> I can do this after I understand the one above LOL
Select 1 or 2 pixels depending on how thick the outside is. ---> this too :D
Now make the photo layer active (highlighted), and hit delete. Then unselect everything (no more marching ants), and you're done. ---> does it mean that I will delete the photo???

I'd be more than happy if anyone here could do some help :p

thanks!!!!!!!!!!

Hope I can explain this - when you click on the area outside of the overlay the outside area has no defined pixel colour (i.e. the pixels are all equal) so the magic wand will pick up the whole area outside of the item.
The expand grows that selection slightly so it sits just inside the overlay.
After that you switch to the 'under' layer so you can delete the outside area of your paper or photo.

Penny - I want you to know how much I adore these overlays!! Its the fastest Ive ever put anything to use!!! They were in my cart in a heartbeat and on to my page a few heartbeats later!!

eta - Becky - I love the extra flair the overlay provided to your gorgeous layout - what a precious, precious photo!

I answered your questions inside of your post! :)

Your photos/papers won't match the overlays perfectly. The overlay canvas is sized larger than the overlay so you can click the outside of the overlay easily. You select the area outside of the overlay because that's the area of your photo/paper you want to erase. Here's a picture.

No, you will only delete the area of your picture/paper hanging out of the overlay area. I added the bluish background so you could see better.

Sue, Thanks!

Holy crap. I feel like I just got beaten with a stupid stick. That is a MUCH EASIER way than what I've been doing with every frame/overlay I've ever used.

:cursing:

OMG, I know! LOL, for some reason, it never occured to me to do it that way!! I've just been erasing and that's a pain! Thanks for the tips and explanations girls!!

I so want these, but I don't think they'll work easily in my program--I'd probably have to use the eraser. I wish there were a psd version where each overlay included a matching solid layer (like a mask). Then I could fill the solid layer with the paper or photo and merge the overlay to it. Unfortunately, it sounds like most people don't need that, so I guess I'm out of luck!

omg Penny ... now I understand LOL ... 'cos that's what I did with my pictures ... check here (for the challenge ;) )

how does it look?? :D

Rachel, what program are you using?

I use Photo Impact X3. It's generally somewhere between PSE and PS in terms of capability, but one big difference is in selections. I can't select an area based on another object--I can't have an overlay selected, and then select the area outside that on another object.
