I think my EHD is dead. :(

I've tried it on 3 computers and none of them will recognize it. I'm starting to restore my Mozy backup now, and I think I only lost the stuff I downloaded this week.. but still... I am so upset. 1 yr and 5 months old.. and it's dead. :(

why do these things die so much.. I don't get it
Yeah, I want to know too! Mine died after 60 days!? I just reordered one because they wouldn't refund my money (you only have 30 days for that). I have little confidence that my "new" one will be much better (they'll probably send me some refurbished piece of garbage.

Ugh, anyway, sorry about your fried EHD :(

So sorry Sara...thanks god for online back up!!! Hope the restore isn't to painfully long for you!!!

EHD scare the bejeezes out of me!!!!

Mine died the other day but dh figured out it was just the CASE that wasn't working, not the actual drive. So he put it in a new case and it works again. WHEW. I'd have died if I lost my ACDSEE tags. I didn't even care about the STUFF, I can buy new stuff - but that tagging took forever!! LOL

Before you give up hope, try a new USB cable, that very well might be your only problem. My spare EHD is only a few months old but the cable is crap and disconnects itself intermittently. A different cable did the trick. I hope that's your only problem.

As for why EHDs die so frequently, they overheat, especially if you actually use it to work from and/or leave it running all the time. They do make EHDs that have a built in fan for cooling and also an on/off switch so you don't have to leave it running all the time.

I even jerked mine plumb off the coffee table onto the floor the other day and about had a heart attack for fear that I'd just killed it deader than dead, but it's still working perfectly. :)

That sucks majorly Sara, hopefully some of these tips will help from sending it to that great big ehd in the sky.
Oh, and is Gizmo a new nickname, lol? I wondered why you had an itty bitty gizmo in your siggie.

I will try a new cable.. i'll get one tomorrow. Sadly, mozy support moved my files for me so that I would not have to run a backup again on the new system.. and something went terribly wrong. I should have around 70 gb and only have about 17-20 gb. All my folders are there but there's only one or two things in each folder. So unless I can get them back from Mozy, or get them back off my ehd.. everything is gone. All the kids baby pictures.. my kits.. my layouts..everything. I'm trying very very very very very hard not to freak out. I know this is my own fault, and I should not have had Mozy delete anything until I knew all my backups were transferred.. but.. I didn't. Sigh.

Sara - Not trying to freak you out further, but Mozy actually is notorious for not being able to restore people with their backed up data. You can google tons of blogs that discuss the failings of Mozy and Carbonite.

The good news is, I have heard of many success stories with recovering data from friend EHDs. I have been told that most of the time, the actual hard drive is fine....it is just the case or a wire that has blown, as was stated before. It may cost you some bucks to get the data restored, but it can be done. If you post over at DST, I know that people will probably respond with suggestions for data recovery companies. Not sure if Geek Squad could handle it.....I think they can.....I think they outsource it to another company. It takes several weeks and serious bucks....but you get your data back.

Good luck!
Susan

Gah. Thanks Susan. I'm online with their live support now, so still hoping. I still have a backup, I just can't get to it due to internet issues, so I'm just waiting for my husband to get home. So there's hope yet...

That stinks Sara! I'm so paranoid about mine, I really should try to get my Mozy back-up to run a little faster... at the rate I'm going it's going to be years before it's all on there!

BLEGH! That sucks girl!! I hope Mozy didn't delete half your schtuff and you can get at least the pictures back or something. :/

It was just the cord. Thank goodness!!!!!!!! I'm back in business. I need to explore a 2nd backup option though.
