Holy Crap. School tuition...

I just got back from finishing up Chloe's kindergarten registration; found out who her teacher is and that she is going ALL DAY  . they did some tests on her, i guess just some fun 'games' to see what she already knows. I didn'g go back with her. Anyway, i was reading through some paper work they gave me and it says in there that Full Day kindergarten has a $1000 a year tuition!! They didnt tel me this when i signed her up for it. I was going to see if i could get her out of full day when i go back tomorrow to pay on her book fees, but DH and i talked and decided we think it will be good for her to go all day. so i'll leave it alone, but i'm going to be asking some questions tomorrow when i go back, lol. like what the heck do they do with that $1000 they are getting from this one class of all day kindergarten, i'm not sure but i think there are 10-15 kids in this class. Thats a lot of money. I'd like to know what they are doing with it. Its just a few extra hours more than half day. its kindergarten; they dont do a whole lot! The book fees are just $60, so what the heck do they need $1000 for? we pay $100 a month, and the first month is due next week. very unexpected bill, while we are trying to get our bathroom done. i put off paying my car payment until the end of the month to do the bathroom, so our funds are limited right now, lol.

anyone else's school want tuition for full day kindergarten? this is the first year they are doing this too. must be an experiment, lol.

It's a wonder kids get any education at all with the way education costs are rising. I don't even want to think about considering it'll be a good 10 years before I have to deal with it. The prices by then should just about bankrupt us, lol.

Are you guys serious? Is this a private school thing?

Around here, all the public school kindergartens are full-day. There are no other options. There's no fee or anything... it's just like any other grade.

i am very serious!! public school full-day kinder costs in colorado. apparently the school district doesn't have enough $$, i mean the median income around here is only $83,000/year and our taxes are super high and ....don't get me started. they are crazy fools 'round here. colorado is one of a few states who charge for full-day kinder.

Holy moly... $1000 a year AND $100 a month. YIKES! DO you also have to provide the school supplies? WOW, those teachers must get paid pretty well.

Holy crap! Here each grade pays a little bit of a fee, but it's for supplies the whole class shares and stuff. It was like $65 for Kindergarten last year. We weren't expecting it, but at least it wasn't something crazy like $1000+!

mine is $200/month for 11 months. LOL!! ridiculous! doesn't cover any supplies or other fees other than my kid being at their school for an extra 2.5 hours. :D yay me!

Our district used to be that way, and they had to have a big referendum to finally start offering free full-day K to everyone (e.g., to raise taxes a bit to pay for it!). It may very well be going to pay the teachers' and/or aids' salaries who are teaching the class. Be thankful the class is so small, though! Ours ended up being close to 25 kids (the teacher had an aid with that many, but still).

DANG! All Kindergarten here is full day and free also (public school). If this is public school I would guess it is going toward teacher salaries and that charging parents to carry the program is the only way the county is allowing full day Kindergarten (in other words the county/state/school district didn't want it due to $$ but came to a compromise to provide it if parents foot the bill).

ha ha I pay $72/month plus all books/supplies to keep them at HOME.

what is wrong with me?

You guys are scaring me. Esp. since I'm already going to be paying out of district tuition for Abby next year due to transportation issues. Sigh.

Here in Colorado with Lizzy full-day kindergarten costs money. At Cameron's school which is a new charter school (public, but chartered) full-day kindergarten tuition is $300/month. At nine months of school, thats $2700/year!! Its insane.
BUT... to play the devil's advocate for a second.... if you as a parent are employeed full time and would otherwise have to pay for 1/2 day childcare for your child when he/she is out of school for the day, then it would cost more than $300 a month for daycare. So, its actually a cheaper choice for some families.
My sister is the 1/2 day kindergarten teacher for my son's charter school and she told me that they get quite a bit of grant money to help some families pay for the full-day kindergarten.
Corey, you might want to check to see if they have anything like that at your school and if you qualify.

i have to laugh...i teach at a private school..my kids tuition is going to be about $500 ish a month :) and remember i said that i teach there...do you even WANT to know what i get paid......... let's just say..we could qualify for government programs..it aint' pretty :)

public school though making you pay?! hmmm...that is kinda nuts..i mean where is the education money in your state going?! there HAS to be money in the system..and believe me..i am SURE that the teachers aren't getting it

too funny if they are though..i think i shall move on up there :)

interesting thread.. :) have a great day.i go back to school tomorrow NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

When I first read this my eyes started bulging and I was thinking WTF!
But really, when you get down to it...school costs a lot.
I pay $90/month just for my kids to eat. That's $810 + school supplies, field trip money, etc. So if you include that, then yeah, school's about $1100/yr.

oh and I forgot to mention that we sent my son to Pre-K at the public school here (which was great and very convenient), but that was $400/month!

I think the deal is with K -- the schools budget traditionally covers only half-day K. You can chose to send your kid for free half-day. If you want full-day, though, it's not covered by the school budget, so parents have to pay for it. At least that's how it worked here until the referendum to raise taxes to add full-day K to the school budget.

ya, no crap. and my kinder tuition is above and beyond all that normal jazz. oh well...I'm thankful it's taken care of and he'll be getting an amazing public education!

I have to pay $15/week for pre-k for food and stuff (it's all day til 230)--in Ga public pre-k is funded by our lottery so that's nice...so I guess I could see paying for full day Kinder..do you still have to send lunch $$ and stuff on top of that? or is that included?

oh no. lunch is on our own too. it's a little over $100/month for all 3 kidlets for hot lunch. although i pack their lunches 80% of the time.

our school also requires that we provide some classroom/teacher supplies. ie. copy paper (white and colored), post-its, dry erase markers...etc.

It started out $4500 for Kindergarten, then went up to $5000 for 1st grade. Then the school lost a HUGE contribution (person only pledged for two years) so they had to pass that on to each child for this year which ends up right at $6000 this year. Then we'd have to drive an extra two hours (back and forth morning and afternoon) a day picking her up, so add on about $4000 a year in gas and the grand total would have been $10k this year. Needless to say, we don't have an extra $10,000 lying around. Couldn't charge it if I wanted to because we ripped up all the credit cards years ago. I'm heartbroken that we can't send her back, I mean I am really just plain devastated because I ADORE that school and all the teachers and people there.
Lunch was 4 dollars a day but you could bring your lunch too.
Yes, it was private christian school. but top notch and totally worth every penny for anybody who actually has that kind of money.
We're going to homeschool. I think.

Sounds just like our situation and what it's like around here. Even if I could beg them to give me a job at the school we had her at, I would only make enough to cover tuition after you take out gas and lunch money and that sort of thing. The school systems here are just plain rotten so a lot of us go broke and live in tiny little houses and have nothing extra- just to send your kid to a decent school. Can't do it this year.

Somebody please tell me why in the heck you have to pay for public school? What the hell is your tax money going to?

Yeah, the teachers around here are most certainly NOT seeing any of that money. My sister makes what every other teacher in the area makes. I think its like $23-25k/yr. Sad that our educators get the shaft when they are doing all the grunt work.

Hey Corey-
Sooooo not trying to be rude, but I am a kindergarten teacher. We do SOOOOOOOOOOO much in kindergarten. K is no longer play, nap, snack. It's hard core reading, writing, science, math, social studies, etc, etc, etc. Basically, kindergarten today is what first grade was 15 years ago. My students have HUGE academic goals they need to meet. It pushes my buttons BIG time when people say that students don't do that much in kindergarten. They need to know all letters, sounds, a large list of sight words, be reading and writing, count to 100 or more, count backwards, add and subtract, know patterning, rhyming, using measuring tools, etc, etc, etc. I know you didn't mean it any offensive way at all, and that you were venting out of some major frustration, but it's a hot-button kind of thing to me. I've had WAAAAY too many people assume that K is all play, and acting silly and doing art projects all day. It's not. K is much more academic than it ever was when we were young.

Additionally, part of the cost is probably going to the teacher's salary. When my district was in half-day K, they were able to exist on 4 K teachers, because each teacher taught twice as many kids. Having a full-day program means paying an extra teachers salary (we went from 4 K teachers to 8 when we made the switch) and that is a HUGE chunk of change for any district to swallow. I'm confused about why they would not have let people applying for the program know that there would be an additional (hefty) cost, but the salary for teacher (and any additional parapros) may be a large part of the reason for the cost.

Anyway...had to get that off my chest. Totally not trying to be a...well, you know...just had to stick up for us K teachers and all the tough things we tackle each year!

holy crap - that's for public school? mckenna's going to kinder for free but it's only 2.5 hrs a day. i know nothing of other costs except supplies.

this is the truth! man, they do sooo much in kinder now. maddie was computer literate, could do simple mutiplication and was reading at a 2nd grade reading level out of kinder (with no beforehand pre-school!) i was amazed. becca, thing is...in our district that extra $$ i am paying doesn't go to the teachers...it's goes into the big-wigs at the superintendent level! now, that pisses me off. if i knew it was going to my students teacher i would gladly pay it, not begrudgingly.

I can't imagine paying that much for school tuition! Yikes! That is exactly why our kids don't go to Catholic school, we could never afford that either (just 2 day preschool is $70/mo and it goes up from there).

In the district we live in kindergarten is still half days, but they've tried to switch to full day for several years but haven't been able to get enough votes or funding I think. But in the district my DH teaches in they've been full day kindergarten for many years, they are a much bigger district though. Our yearly enrollment fees are pretty reasonable as well: kindergarten $30, grades 1-5 $60, 2 day preschool $80, 3 day preschool $120 and 5 day preschool $200. Lunches are $1.75/day but reduced lunches are only $0.40/day (which we qualify for as a family of 5 on a teacher's salary).

Teachers are also paid pretty well in the district my DH teaches in, the district we live in doesn't pay quite as well but I don't think it's much less. His district also pays 100% of insurance premiums, although they are saying this might be the last year they do that due to rising premium costs. A first year teacher with just a bachelor's degree will start this year @ just under $38k/year, this is my DH's 5th year so he is higher up the pay scale.

oh yes..and to back that right up sista..we in k3 do what i think k has done in the past... :) my kids are leaving my classroom knowing their numbers 1-30 and some in spanish..know their days of the week and months of hte year, we do science, religion, they know all their basic prayers *catholic school*, they know their abcs, recognize their letters, can write them, etc..we very seldom play :) but do have a lot of fun..they take a two hour nap..but by the time you get their paperwork done..and folders, it is up and atem again :)

my pay almost doesn't even cover my kids tuition..but it is a quality school..so that is why we are there..PLUS i figure..i need all the help withthe MAN upstairs..so i consider me teachign there for peanuts is my vocation :) haha..

our kinder program is AMAZING..my little girl just came out of it and has read all the junie b books this summer..i am totally awestruck by all K learns..i remember what i did in K and preschool...and i don't remember knowing THAT much already :) haha.

have a fabulous day..off to work in my classroom...which by the way i spent over $280 in the teacher store of myown cash yesterday alone :) i need a second job :) good thing i have other tricks up mysleeve or i couldn't teach there :)

rambling ..sorry..xoxo.ash
