Computer HELP!!!!

So I can't run Photoshop for 5 minutes w/o it telling me I don't have enough RAM. I have 18 GB of free space on my computer, I've defragmented it and cleared up space on my C drive.

I've checked the properties in Photoshop and I've alloted more than enough RAM to the program (70%) and the cache level is at 5.

Why it is STILL telling me I don't have enough RAM is beyond me. :cursing: I NEED my Photoshop especially at the moment b/c I'm on a deadline for something.

Anyone have any ideas? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
yeah hit ctrl+alt+delete and go to processes--click on processes then click on memory usage (I have to click twice) to see what is hogging up your memory and try ending some things thru there that might be running in the bg
 
Are you trying to do the same thing when it keeps locking up? I had that happen once and it was actually something I was going that was causing the problem!
 
hello use to give me issues.. well I mean having hello PS and illustrator all open together. I'm betting there's somethign else you have running that is being a butt.
 
I have Microsoft Word running....and that's IT.

It's SO SO SO frustrating. I can only have Photoshop running though and it happens. It's just all of a sudden tonight it started.
 
what are you trying to do? it just started doing this right? maybe you have something on a weird setting? like size wise I mean.. 600 ppi .. or 36000000X3600000000 instead of the right size (don't laugh I have done this lol)

Your hard drive space and RAM are kind of like apples and oranges, so even if you have 18GB of free space, it doesn't necessarily mean you have adequate RAM (if I'm reading your post correctly). Adobe recommends a minimum of 512MB of RAM, but your system will run slow with the minimum amount if you have other programs in use concurrently. I installed another GB of RAM on my machine and it made a HUGE difference. I still get virtual memory messages, but I usually just bypass them with no issue. I hope you get it figured out!
 
Just because YOU don't have it open doesn't mean it's not running in the background hogging RAM. I'd have a look at that processes and see how much of your computer is being used. When I do that on my PC with Photoshop, IE, and a bunch of other crap running, I'm still only at 2-3%.
 
I had that happen a couple of nights ago after an update ran on my Windows. It may be the cause. The solution was I had to re-boot. That's all.

Yes, I know....I guess I just freed up space b/c of my scratch disks b/c sometimes those are full and I can't do a darn thing on Photoshop b/c of it. But you're right - they're different.

How much was the extra gig of RAM you bought? I have a laptop - is it easy to install?

I searched and searched (google and my computer) to see how I can a) find out how to look up how much RAM I have on my computer and b) actually went through the simple steps on my computer to see...(start, my computer, c drive properties) and nope, not there where it's supposed to be under the "general" tab.

Does anyone know how to look up how much RAM is on a PC running on Windows XP? I'm at a loss.
 
Thanks guys for your help and suggestions. Unfortunately most of them, which would be simple solutions, aren't the problem.

Yes, I know what you mean. The problem is that when I go to ctrl+alt+delete to see the "Process" tab besides what I know I have open under my username and what's under "SYSTEM" that the computer needs to run it's all a bunch of odd things, ie: ctfmon.exe and wdfmgr.exe.....:thumbdown:

I was having the same problem for a while and that site ran a scan on my computer to see how much memory I could install and how much I had. Unfortunitely for me, I already had the max that my computer could handle. But check that link or google for some info on your specific computer and hopeful you'll get it fixed up1

On my computer you can locate it by doing this: Start > my computer > sytem tasks (left side bar) > view system information > general. It should tell you what you have on computer on the lower part of the window. It sounds like that's what you already did, so I'd probably just look up your info on the manufacturer's website. I installed mine on a desktop and it was really easy. I just had to take the face plate off my tower and put it into the slot. I'm not sure how to do it on a laptop, but I saw lots of laptop compatible RAM when I was shopping, so it's probably fairly similar. Just make sure you get one that's compatible. I had to go onto my machine's website to get the exact specs and then none of the local stores carried anything compatible so I had to order mine online, but it was only around $60 for 1GB, and so far, it's been well worth it. If you have a machine that takes a common type of RAM it's even cheaper. HTH! (I hope I didn't insult you when I said RAM and hard drive space were different -- not my intention).

I have 2 GB and for some reason I'm under the impression it's the max?

You should be able to google your computer and look for something about it's "specs" and it will tell you the max amount you can have and how many slots you have (some computers have one card slot and some computers have 2 card slots!!

Like I can only have a max of 2GB and I have 2 slots so I have to have two 1GB cards I can't just have a 2GB card in one slot!!
