how do you keep track of what you've scrapped?

Do you store your finished layouts in with your photos? I'm working on some photo organizing and album planning and I just realized that maybe it doesn't make sense to store my layouts in one folder and my photos in another - maybe I should put the layouts in with the photos so I can see at a glance what's scrapped. Anyone have some thoughts here?

i just have one folder for all my layouts. and all my photos are in one folder, with subfolders. every day i upload photos from my camera, it automatically creates a new folder with the date of the pic i don't organize very well, lol.

are you organizing today, Emmy?

hmm, I guess for me it doesn't matter b/c my goal isn't to get photos scrapped. My goal is to use digi stuff :p. I use to worry about using a photo more than once but now it doesn't bother me.

I keep my photos in a different place, organized by child and by month. I keep my scrap materials (kits, pages in progress, completed pages, printed pages) stored in a different place on my HD. Once a LO is finished, I move it to the Completed folder. Once something is printed, it goes to the Printed folder. Whenever I do a big round of printing, I burn those pages to DVD and delete them from my HD to save space.

And I should also add that I keep a "Pics to Scrap" folder with my scrapping stuff. Whenever I take pictures, I move the ones I want to scrap to that folder. When I've scrapped them, I move them out of that folder. It sounds like a lot of work, but it's quick with copying and pasting.

I use photos more than once all the time. I'll use it if it fits a challenge perfectly, or fits a story I want to tell, or fits a kit I want to use. I don't care if I use them more than once, and odds are no one else will care either, lol.

Photos are stored in a completely different area than digi scrap stuff. They are organized by year, then by season, with events getting their own folder in the season. Plus a "random pics" folder in each season, with all the pics I snap for no good reason other than to just take them.

Eventually I'll get my LO's uploaded somewhere and printed. For now they just sit on my hard drive, lol.

I am SO disorganized but I do have a folder for the layouts seperately. I am starting to save teh psd files as well.

Yes Mimi I'm organizing! We are done with school for summer break (ok 7 weeks...) and I've got big scrapping plans for our time off. I love your description of how you scrap to "use your digi stuff" - I never thought of wording it that way but that's what I've been doing pretty much since I started digi scrapping. But now I'm finding I miss having more completed albums to look through (and the kids miss it too) so I'm going to try and be a bit more organized in how I scrap and perhaps even be really unfashionable and do some chronological books. ;)

I don't mind using photos more than once sometimes either but in the case of event layouts and some things, I really don't want to duplicate my efforts.

Thanks for all the responses - I always love reading how other people approach their scrapping. :)

I actually have all my photos organized in categories and if I have a photo that works very well with a kit that I plan on using, I'll scrap with it any way. LOL

I scrap in order and am caught up so I haven't run into the unorganized issue. I don't store layouts and pics together though. I store on EHD and Burn to DVD and also upload and store at www.fotki.com. I have a folder in my documents labeled "Print" that I store a resized copy of my layouts in until I can get them printed. I print at home

LOL!

When I print a Shutterfly book I arrange the layouts chronologically and I realized one of my kid's books was missing a big chunk of time (like a year?).

Oh I never answered your question. I organize my layouts by putting them in separate CT folders. It's my way of keeping track of what I've done I guess.

One thing I keep meaning to do is to name my files with dates so that it is easier to organize for printing. Like put the year and month as a prefix.

I refuse to scrap chronological because I don't want to feel "guilty" for not being caught up.

I'm all about the here and now, lol.

Well, it was pretty easy for me before because I was working on 2007 and just remembered which pictures I had used. (i keep them separate)

Recently I started going back and scrapping my first daughters early pictures (2004-2006) and decided ACDSee would be great! So I went through and tagged all the pictures I wanted to scrap and when I scrap them, I un-tag them. It works GREAT!

I just remember. I've never run into accidentally scrapping photos twice and/or using a kit more than once. I can just look through my stash and my photos and remember which I've done and which I haven't.

Don't ya just hate me now, E?! :p

I suppose if I had four boys to take care of, my memory would be less perfect...

This is exactly what I do!

P.S. Chronological is cool, yo.

I don't scrap that way on purpose, but it ends up working out that way as I like to work on pictures I'm excited abt and those are usually ones I've just taken. There are some gaps when, like, nothing exciting happens or I don't want to scrap another boring sports game, but otherwise, I manage to hit the highlights of each month in the following month so it's all still 'fresh.'

I organize all photos and layouts chronologically: by 'group,' i.e. Family, Friends, Jeff/Tyler/Me, & Misc. (attention wh*re self portrait photo shoots & landscape photos are usually the bulk of this folder), then year, then month.

Mimi - I do name my files with the date and it is quite handy for printing or organizing. Typically a layout would be named by kid_subject_monthyear.jpg

Colleen - well I don't feel guilty, but I do enjoy having a balance of things scrapbooked. Not just my really fab photos or special moments styled pages
but also events and everyday pics. I've just been in a rut lately and need to scrap more of the regular pages too so I'm not missing big expanses of time. Also, I'm working on school albums for the boys and I want those to be fairly complete. And when I'm not keeping an eye to it (like the last year or more!), I tend to leave out stories I want scrapped or have an imbalance of pics scrapped between my 4 boys. Sorry - probably way more info that you care to know LOL

General comment - I think because digital is newer/trendier/whatever there tends to be a lot less traditional chronological album making scrappers in it. That or they are not too vocal on the boards!

LeeAndra - I was able to recall until I had my 4th kid. At that point - sadly, those abilities were lost to me. :D

Thanks for all the great replies!

I paperscrapped chronologically for 11 years before making the jump to digital and I would be lost if I started jumping around.

I just remember what I've scrapped. Too much effort to try and organize that. I do have my pics organized by month so i can just go find which pic i want from whatever month/year

I am so not there yet - I have so many pictures and I try to scrap the picture - Right now I have a separate folder for all my photo shop pages

I have so many things that I haven't scrapped that the odds aren't likely that I'll rediscover the same pic that I've already used. LOL But I would like to organize myself better so I can be inspired by the photos. Right now I hunt though photos for over an hour to find one that I want to scrap. That isn't right. LOL

I tend to remember what photos I have scrapped, not that that stops me from scrapping them again. :) Some photos I just love, some I scrapped 3 years ago when I was still new and want to reuse them now, with better shadowing. :) I use all my kits at least twice too.

I keep my photo organized by month & year & I'll name them descriptively if I think they need it. "Boys outside" doesn't need labelled but "Dinosaur birthday party" does. Photos I think would be good to scrap I tag 'scrap' in ACDSee, so when I am in the mood to scrap I just bring up that tag & go to work. I add a tag 'done' to them if I use them.

My scrapping stuff is kept seperately. I have a folder for the original .pspimage layout, and one for the web resized one. When I decide to print, I go in and save the .psp as a .jpg of whatever size I am printing. The go in a Printed folder.

Stacey you sound really organized!

I tag my really great pics on PSE organizer but not everything I want to scrap. I think that's a good idea to tag them as done.

I have scrapped several photos multiple times.. My style has changed so much since I have started so I kinda think of it as a makeover for that layout. I haven't had layouts printed except one for my mom.

This is how I organize my LO's I create. If I am working on an album, I keep all the Lo's for that particular album in a folder of the same name. I also have folders for any challenges I participate in. I may not have these LO's printed, but if I really like them, I can always add them to an album. I also keep a separate folder for any layouts that I share in a gallery, as most of those layouts have to be resized.

My photos are all organized in their own folders. I have my son's folder divided up by month so I can keep track.
Then, all my digi pages are in their own folder. As I get more and more done, I will organize that folder by age as well (since they are all of my son) and it will make it easier for printing later :D
I upload my pages to my Flickr Pro account and resize them there to post in the gallery.

I have a 'pics to scrap' folder, too. I love not having to search through ALL of my photos when I feel like scrapping. When I upload photos to the computer, I copy anything scrapworthy into the scrapping folder. When I've scrapped it (or decided I'm not going to scrap it after all), I delete the copy. I also store journaling or notes in the 'Pics to scrap' folder so that I write it while it's fresh.

I tend to work on a year at a time, though within that year I scrap in any order I'm inspired to. It drives me crazy never to have finished albums, so I have to work on one (per child) at a time and then make myself move on when I have enough of the best photos and stories scrapped. Otherwise I'd still be working on my older DS's baby album and there'd be nothing current scrapped!

This is how my harddrive is set up
Digital Scrapping Stuff
Digital Scrapbook Pages
Family Photos

Under Scrapping stuff its by Designer & I organize better through ACDsee

Digital Scrapbook Pages is by Month & Year (I'm a chronological scrapper)

Family Photos also by Month & Year, I just name my photos by the date. And I just tag the photos in ACDsee as the ones I want to scrap.

ok i feel like a doofus for not doing this but i'm going to start adding the date...it will sure help when i print out my layouts...
