High School Reunion help

I can't believe it has been this long, but my 20th high school reunion is over Thanksgiving. I have no idea what to wear. It's an evening event at a hotel in Connecticut, but the invite says dress is "casual, stylish, and smart." (The organizer is one of my HS best friends and I can't wait to see him, but fashion-wise we're living very different lives these days. He's a gay man living in NYC who has always known how to look good, and I'm an overweight SAHM of 3 whose acquaintance with smart and stylish ends with flattering jeans.) Looking online people seem to say nice jeans are fine for a casual reunion and I'd love to wear them, but I don't want to be underdressed. I'd wear a little black dress if I had one, but I've never been able to find one that looks good on and I doubt I'll be able to change that in the couple of hours I have tomorrow with my preschooler "helping." What would you wear? If you've been to any of your reunions, did people really wear jeans? Thanks!

If you had a dark pair of jeans and then had a sparkly/fancy top and dressier shoes, I think that would meet the "casual, stylish, and smart." :)

I'm one of those people that want to be marked as "can not be found" in the booklet they hand out at the reunions... haha.... I hated highschool... however, my cousin - who was one of the popular kids - can always track me down because my uncle is her godfather... :glare: On the upside - they tried to set up the 10th year and no one wanted to come... haha... we'll see what next year, my 20th will bring... :D

Have a great time!!

Yeah, I agree....dark jeans with a sparkly/shimmery top. I'm all for casual...high school reunions, not so much. LOL!

I had my 20 year reunion in 2012 and I wore a dark wash jean and a nice sparkly top just as the other girls suggested. It was totally appropriate and fit in well with what everyone else was wearing. Do you hair up nice, maybe put some curls in it if you can. That always dresses you up a bit more. Well, it does me anyway. ;)

Yay! These responses make me happy. Finding a nice top to wear with my jeans sounds a lot more doable (and a lot more "me") than a dress. It turns out I won't be going shopping until tonight since DD woke up sick, so hit me with any other suggestions you have, too. Thanks!

I didn't love or hate high school. I was far from popular, but I had a great group of friends that I don't do a good enough job keeping in contact with. The organizer and my other best friend are both going, so I'm sure it will be fun. I went to the 10 year and was surprised that even people who were above me in the HS pecking order were friendly and wanted to catch up.

My hair doesn't know any other way to be! It's straight that takes tons of work for me, LOL.

I agree with the clothes. My high school hasn't had a reunion. No one planned a 10 year, then someone tried to plan an 11 year, but everyone thought that was stupid. Then no one planned the 15 year last year. lol Though my first high school that I did not graduate from, invited me. I didn't go.

Have fun! I've always enjoyed my reunions (and my husband's -- we went to different high schools but graduated the same year). The operative word in the description is "casual", so I think you should wear whatever you feel comfortable with. There is no right or wrong. I wore a fitted sleeveless dress to my last reunion, but there was the full gamut there -- including plenty of people wearing jeans.

Old Navy has some sequined tank tops... maybe get a shimmery tank and then a nice shirt to go over it?

I went to Kohls last night hoping to find a sparkly tank to wear under a cardigan I already have, but I didn't see anything. Thanks-I'll check ON. I tried on a few dresses, too, but I didn't like any of them enough.

Dark or black jeans... and I love the shimmery top idea! I'm sure with the holiday's coming you will be able to find something great!

Have fun!!! (I missed mine last year - Sandy hit, and things weren't back to normal. Plus, we went on a cruise).
