New England Fall Fashion- HELP!!!

My husband and I are going to Boston next weekend for a 3.5 day adventure. It looks like it's going to be in the high 50's during the day. I need help on what to take to wear.

Keep in mind the following
- We live in Florida. It was in the 90's here this past weekend. 50's is going to feel super duper cold to me!
- It's going to be a little rainy for the weekend. Do I need boots? Water proof gloves? (where do I find those)
- I'm a plus sized girl so finding clothes is not easy. I'm looking for things I could wear again.

So what do people in NE wear in the Fall? I know that probably sounds absurd, but I have not idea if jeans will be under dressed in case we are sight seeing all day and then go out to a nice dinner. But at the same time I need to be comfortable. I just don't want to stick out like a sore thumb. Thoughts? Ideas?

I'm thinking jeans, long sleeved t-shirts layered with boyfriend cardigans and then I guess some kind of jacket on top? I think I need gloves - no idea what kind to get, but I think the little thin ones they sell in Fla aren't going to cut it. What about a hat and a scarf or is that over doing it?
 
I live in Ohio so our weather can go from 90 one day to snowing the next. (no joke I've seen it happen)
I know in the fall I layer a lot, that way if I get hot I can take off layers or put more on if I get cold. And as for the rain part, I'd suggest boots to keep your feet dry. I can't stand my feet being wet. You don't necessarily need gloves but if you don't like your hands cold then sure why not. Scarfs are totally doable....plus they are in with the fashion right now. So if it's a light scarf, then I say sure.

Boston does tend to be a bit more windy and cold than Ohio though. But I'm sure they wear similar items to use Ohioans. lol

i live in boston - so i can give you some ideas :) the weather is actually really gorgeous here now - cool, but not too cold!

on cool days, i usually wear jeans or leggings with boots or cute flats. unless it's really wet you don't really NEED boots, but they are cute. in the winter you would need snow boots or something, but it's really nice out now! ETA: i just saw that you said it will be rainy - so boots are a good idea. i have a few pairs of leather knee high boots that i wear and hunter brand boots are very popular here.

i think if you have cute tops (not just t-shirts) you are fine with jeans or leggings in restaurants - i never get dressed up unless i am going somewhere that is actually pretty fancy. i'll just dress up my look with a little jewelry or something. my tops are usually long tunic sweaters or long draped cardigans over tanks.

i think your thin gloves will be fine - i'm no where near pulling out gloves yet :) you probably should bring a little jacket or something to wear though for when you get chilly. i don't think many people will be wearing hats or scarves yet ... but if you have a light scarf that could be helpful.

bring layers so that if you end up not being as cold as you think you will be you are OK - and vice versa :)

I live near the boston area. I live in jeans and a hoodie mostly, though it's been hot lately tbh. the weather's been really moody so layering is def your best bet :] and a hoodie can double as a "coat" so if you end up in a nicer place you can just take that off. It's def not hat/scarf/mittens time yet and I only wear boots when there's snow ^__^ but since you're a floridian just wear what you're comfortable with. I'm not fashionable :p I'm all about comfort.

also, I def would not rely on the weather forcast for next weekend being accurate yet. Like i said.. super moody weather lately :p It's fall in new england, it's how it goes lol
 
also. as long as they're not grubby jeans you're fine. I've been in super nice restaurants and seen men still wearing jeans :p so if they can so can we. lol just wear a nice top as one of your layers, and you're fine.
 
Great advice ladies! I'm thinking jeans, nicer tops, cardigan (long) and then a light scarf. My little gloves for night time, just in case (easy to stash in my backpack). I have some boots I bought at the end of the "winter" season last spring here in Florida. I'm not sure they're walking boots though. Thinking I'll look for some shorter boots that look comfy to walk in that I can wear with jeans. I can wear those here in the winter too.

Glad to know I don't need to buy gloves or find a hat and heavy coat. I just want to relax and enjoy the leaves and hopefully some cooler weather while hanging out with my husband.
 
Have fun! I don't live in Boston anymore, but I grew up 2 hours away and was there for college. DH and I always thought we'd move back, but it didn't happen due to his job. I think you'll need more than a light layer over your shirt. Not a winter coat, but probably a fleece jacket. If you can get one with a windesistant layer inside, that's even better.
 
I'm an hour north of Boston and the weather has been gorgeous lately! I'm originally from AZ, so the weather has been fun. You can't really expect the weather forecast to be good for more than 2 days though, so you may get better weather yet. A lot of times the rain is mostly just drizzly unless there is a wind or thunderstorm along with it.

If you are worried about the cold, layering jeans over leggings works well. I only need that in sub-freezing temperatures if I'm doing more than going to the car and back. I wore boots and leggings under a dress the other day and got hot, but I've also got pregnancy warmth. My SIL from AZ was here this weekend and good in jeans and a hoodie. Your warmest clothing will probably be perfect. (She did need light gloves when going on a drizzly walk), but at the end she was fine because the walking warmed her up. It's only stopping for awhile outside that I really need warmer clothes. I'd recommend layers and a light fashion scarf and light gloves.

You'll want good shoes in Boston because of all the cobblestone. I wore heels once when we went to see a show at the Opera House and I wished I had brought other shoes for walking. Business ladies make it all the time, but I felt really wobbly. Lol.

I live just outside of Boston (and work in Boston). Right now, the weather is pretty great. The forecast is for daytime highs in the low to mid 60's with overnight lows in lower 50's for the next ten days. If you're going north or west of Boston, those highs and lows can be lower. Boston sometimes tends to be a bit on the higher side of things in cooler weather since it's coastal.

For this type of weather, I'd wear either jeans and a t-shirt with a light jacket over it or jeans and long-sleeved shirt with nothing over it. And, unless you're going to be going to Top of the Hub or something like that, that would be fine in a restaurant.

Hats, scarves, and gloves would, I think, be overkill. Of course, I am a lifelong New Englander and it usually takes temps in the teens and single digits with windchills below zero before I'll put on hats or scarves. I'll break out the gloves when it gets to the low 30's/high 20's.

As far as boots, they sort of all into three categories...fashion, rain, and winter/snow. You definitely won't need the latter. There may be some rain over the weekend, right now that questionable, but, if there is, it doesn't look like lot so you wouldn't really need rainboots. The fashion type would be up to what you're comfortable wearing. I have a pair on right now but not because of the weather but comfort. Whatever you choose to wear for footwear, I'd suggest making sure it's comfortable to walk in. As mentioned above, there are parts of Boston that's still cobblestoned (Faneuil Hall). I've lived here my whole life and I always stick with flats when I know I'm going to be walking on the cobblestones.

Your best bet will be to go with layers so you can adjust to how the temps feel to you. I know for you it'll probably feel colder than it does for me. If it helps, it's currently in the mid 60's today and I left the house wearing a very light weight sweater with a sleeveless mock turtle neck underneath. I did have a windbreaker on as well this morning but it was still in the 50's then. I don't think I'll need it when I go home tonight.

Lightweight fleece jacket over lightweight shirt, jeans, and comfortable shoes for walking (if you're going to be out walking around that is). I wear a lot of fleece up here in the fall - you can get one in a fun color. I wear a hooded zip-up sweatshirt a lot too but they're more for bumming around at soccer games and working outside in the yard.

A really good friend of mine moved from Maine to Florida 3 years ago and when it was 70 up here this summer she had her warm-up jacket on all day:D I had shorts and a T-shirt on all day with sandals - LOL. She said she definitely feels cold when she comes up here now!
 
Juli this is pretty much what I wore today, it was chilly and cloudy all day.. When my family from the South comes they want layers. The scarf is the really light cotton one's It's now like a mild winter over there.


Jeans and a pair of black slacks and you are all set to go out to a nice restaurant if your worried about looking out of sorts.
 
Oh, I love that outfit Mary! I wish I could figure out how to pull off a scarf like that. I totally suck at fashion!

Thanks for all the input. If anyone has ideas for places to eat, I'd love some suggestions on that too. :)

As for the weather today it was 70deg and I had flip flops and a t-shirt, I tell ya this New England weather.. SMH :blink:
 
Mary - Why did I think you lived in California? I'm so confused!!! Tell Mother Nature to cool it down for next weekend. I need 60's, no humidity and sun. LOL!
 
jaja my son's dream is to live in California... No i'm in Connecticut where we get all 4 of nature's goodness ;)
I def think you'll get a good mix of our crazy weather. I hope you have an amazing and fun filled trip.

Definitely no humidity - we're experiencing a true Indian Summer this fall :) This is my favorite time of year when we have this kind of weather. Next week looks to be in the 60s all week again as long as nothing changes, which is a very real possibility :D
